Verdict reached in George Zimmerman case - Not Guilty

This I'd agree with--the mind-blowing part of the whole thing is that there's zero question that Zimmerman killed a kid, and zero question that he essentially started the sequence of events by chasing him down. But, legally, the prosecution had to prove the unprovable beyond a reasonable doubt, because just proving that he did it and he started it wasn't enough.

The news commentator on the livestream I watched mentioned that he thought the defense had the argument won on the legal side of things, but that the prosecution had it on the moral side of things. And it's frustrating that there's such a wide gulf between the two in this case.

Good post.

Fro a common sense standpoint he's in jail right now, going off of the letter of the law? They made the right decision.

So all the people who were fired/demoted because they didn't think they had enough to convict... are they going to get their jobs back for being 100% correct?

Could you imagine a black man killing a white teenager, make a statement at the police station, and be in bed by the end of the night without being charged?

The fact that this case almost didn't go to trial says a lot more

Except that Zimmerman isn't white. The "white on black" narrative is appealing to many, but really isn't appropriate here.

As a black male, what's fair is fair. Trayvon wasn't an angel, if someone has authority over you.. no need to feel like you are above them and escalate a situation.

Yeah, NOBODY gives a shit, clearly, based on thats all anyone has talked about for months.
Justice does not give a shit the prosecution and the cops didn't get a shit.

Zimmerman HAD NO AUTHORITY WHATSOEVER

so from the press conference the prosecution wanted to throw the case

Just watching GZ attorney's closing remarks to the jury is infuriating.

The fact that the jury believed that his client was "walking back to his car and was then attacked from behind by the teen out of the darkness or bushes" is fucking maddening.

Jury made the right call. Tragic incident overall but at the end of the day, all of the evidence pointed to Zimmerman acting in self defense.

Mark O'Mara and Don West did a great job.

The jury believed it was self defense. That is how our justice system works. We are only seeing pieces. Most of you get your information from the media and third party sources. You may not be happy with the verdict, but they system worked.

You're honestly telling me that the facts don't support even a manslaughter conviction?

You think it was proven beyond a reasonable doubt? I'd hate to be an innocent man sitting with you on a jury pool if that's all the evidence you'd need to throw someone in prison for the rest of they're life.

"Brought out the Truth for trayvon martin"

The truth that he was a thug, weed smoking, MMA style fighting hooligan that went up to this poor soft sap Zimmerman and beat him to a pulp with his bag of skittles.

Thank you for bringing out the truth

I don't know what's more silly in here... people talking about George having to deal with "Karma" (fucking lol) or being viewed as a villain in public. He will be viewed as a god damn hero to some and to most he will be totally forgotten about.

I don't know what's worse, the fact he got off not guilty when he obviously committed murder

or

The fact I expected this verdict since the trial started. I just have faith in the American justice system and, above all, Florida. I kinda feel fucked up.

The thing that pisses me off the most is that he has never once showed any shred of remorse over this. None. He believes he did the right thing, and it was God's plan, and wouldn't change anything he did even knowing what he does now.

Which is that Trayvon wasn't doing anything wrong, wasn't a criminal, and belonged in the neighborhood.

So that tells me that it doesn't matter if Trayvon fought back, or threw the first punch. Zimmerman is proud that he killed a kid for no fucking reason. And that is sickening. And he got away with it.
Yep, sad fucking day for America.

I think this fucking sucks and there's no other way to put it. My heart goes out to every sane American that has no choice but to witness and accept this travesty.

I'm so fucking mad right now. Its open season on black kids. Fucking bullshit. Its fucking bullshit that this guy didn't have to testify. Because if that racist piece of shit had to testify he would have been found guilty. Its fucking bullshit that he didn't have to explain why he started the confrontation.

This whole situation is fucked. Not even manslaughter? This guy brought a gun on a neighborhood watch patrol, got paranoid about a teenager, got into a confrontation and shot someone who was unarmed. I don't think its murder per se but he did kill someone. And walking away without even a manslaughter charge is sending the wrong message.

I agree about there not being enough evidence to prove this is murder.

I remember when they were announcing they charged him, and -everyone- was expecting Manslaughter, as a make good. Then they dropped the Murder 2 thing and people freaked out.

Looking back, what made them think that was a good idea?

Florida's self defense law makes no sense. Dead people don't talk. If they did the law would make more sense.

If anything positive is to come of this, I hope it a re-examination of what self-defense means in Florida and the US in general. Right now, if you kill the witness(es), you get to say it was self-defense. Fuck that.

Yep. I honestly thought that he would be found guilty when I hear that it was an all female jury (some might have been mothers). All in all I think they made the right decision.

Good, now I will carry a gun, instigate a fight, and shoot the person I harassed and then claim self-defense. I know I will be declared innocent.

totally shameful and disgusting

I want to hear from the Jurors:

"Every time we thought about convicting Zimmerman, we would remember that hilarious knock-knock joke Mr. West told at the beginning and start laughing so hard we'd forget what we were talking about. "
