Just got back from second viewing, this time in IMAX 3D. So beautiful. First movie I actually recommend the 3D version.

Question for others: When Newt said the aliens have done this before with the dinosaurs, did he mean that the Kaiju wiped out the dinosaurs, or that the Kaiju were the dinosaurs?

The dinosaurs were the original Kaiju. He mentions how they were only attack dogs.

They came at the time of the dinosaurs but the climate/atmospheric conditions were not suitable so they closed the rip.

The attack dogs were referencing to Kaiju Category 1-3. That's why the Jaegers were doing so well against them. They were designed to thin out the defenseless populace rather than fight one-on-one against something their size. Kaiju Category 4 and up were designed to be the shotgun that puts down mankind for good. It explains why even legends like Typhoon and Alpha were getting stomped.

Same here. I hate 3D but I loved it here and the reason I think why I liked it was they went all out with the 3D. This push for "subtle" 3D is bullshit. The entire gimmick is a spectacle treat it as such. Throw things at the screen, make it constantly raining for no reason. I want feel like I'm watching a 3D movie not a regular movie with some depth.

As for what Newt meant, I think he meant the Dinosaurs were the original Kaiju. They couldn't survive because the atmosphere wasn't messed up enough for them.

I hope the dvd release has extended scenes with Cherno and Crimson fighting more. Because Crimson didn't even use it's third arm and both Jaegers looked so cool.

Well it makes sense that the Kaiju design in the movies used dinosaurs as a template, since (imo) as mentioned the first time they opened the breach was at the time of dinosaurs. So the aliens looked at what was thriving on the planet at the time, and designed their creatures of war/invasion/destruction on them.

To me, it doesnt make sense for the dinosaurs to be referenced as attack dogs...because they weren't attacking anything really, just living and evolving. I dont think the Aliens genetically engineered the dinosaurs. They were just the dominant species at the time.

But I only saw it once so...I'll keep closer attention to it next time.

It would if they were the very initial wave. Remember they got bigger and more dangerous with each new category, A theoretical category zero would be relatively small. I figured they intended to say that due to the atmosphere the dinokaiju died out. Then humans pretty much colonized the planet for them.

Incidentally, they wouldn't have had to wait millions of years in their time before trying again, just open a portal at a later point in our universe's timeline. That could have been 'next week' in their timeline.

In sci fi, there is no reason for universes in parallel to run at the same rate of time. Also I've read Greg Bear books called Eon and Eternity which both have similar portals.

It's also ridiculous that no one in the decade of Kaiju attacks thought of putting a nuke inside a Kaiju carcass and send it down the portal, but that doesn't bother me obviously, it's a fantasy world where world governments are idiotic enough to build walls to keep Kaiju out.

They have tried to nuke the portal before but it didn't work, they had no idea only the kaiju could get through. Up until the scientists did their thing they just thought that it was a matter of timing.

The part were we saw the australian Jaegers in the News style were it was protecting Sydney, just looked so damn good.

Kinda wish they had a bit more day time battles.

The ship sword and that whole scene, even though spoiled with the trailers, is still the most epic moment IMO.

Damn, never have I wanted to watch a movie instantly again after already watching it.

Will try to wait for blu ray, will be DAY1 ( hopefully a poster special edition is available)


I kinda hope we could have seen 3 Jaegers vs the class 5 beast, would have been epic ( also wish the Chinese one lasted a bit longer, looks so epic, so little screen time)

Striker Eureka has a nuke on its back, The plot revolves around this, It's mentioned during the explanation of the plan and the camera focuses on it multiple times with a huge hazard symbol. Striker is the fastest Jaeger that's why its getting the 3 Jaeger escort.

No reason for them to think they could use a Kaiju carcass they have no idea how the shield over the rift works they assume its just a one way force field they never even figured the Kaiju were anything other than a mindless invading beast race expecting them to expect the shield to be DNA coded is a leap in logic.

No only that but many Kaiju carcasses were quickly destroyed and/or harvested because the blood burns and pollutes the surrounding area. Kaiju Blue was explained early on.

Thus why a sword was so effective at cleaving off the wing from the second class 4.

It seems their plans for dealing with the Kaiju were constantly evolving. They continued to iterate on Jaeger's obviously but they were winning for a long time because of them. It wasn't until the fall of Gypsy that the government moved on and in an act of desperation went with the wall idea. That failed miserably of course.

Perhaps a rail gun or some form of anti-defense placed in the cities is the next logical step had the Kaiju invasion continued. Keep in mind that it took these countries pulling their resources together to even fund the Jaeger program to begin with.

If they can just make portals wouldn't they open a new one and attack with a vengeance? Why didn't they just send 10 or so kaiju at once? Too many questions, the plot was pretty weak imho.

Sounds like a funding nightmare.

It's much cheaper than building jaegers and training their pilots.
in general I am dissatisfied with the explanations in this movie.

1. It's silly to fight Kaiju with Jaegers but we want a movie of monsters vs robots, so make up an explanation such as Kaiju can only be defeated with the power of a certain type of energy source reactor which is too small to fit in aircraft and ships can't go on land if necessary so we have huge robots.
2. Kaiju are vulnerable to fire and don't even need nukes to be defeated, so if the portal is in the same place we can just put lots of bombs waiting to explode when it opens, so change the plot so it opens up randomly.
3. Coastal wall is a stupid idea, should be replaced with some other super weapon that the Kaiju disable.

If you recall the ending, the bomb detonated at their airport facility, not in the tunnel itself. Maybe that destroyed their ability to make more portals for now at least.

The facility that made the portal was destroyed by the nuke. They're going to have to build a new one, and the humans will be more prepared this time.

The rate of Kaiju attacks was increasing, so it seems like they were overcoming some difficulties. Perhaps they were finding the portal easier to operate, or perhaps they were pumping out Kaiju as fast as they could produce them. Sending out 10 kaiju at once seemed beyond their abilities.

Also the kaiju were clones with adaptations to overcome previous losses. It's efficient to send smaller probe attacks before the onslaught which was coming.

Just came back from a pretty packed showing. All I could think while I was watching it was how incredibly awesome a serious effort at a live action Evangelion would be. Pacific Rim had some cool moments, but ultimately it's just a forgettable, utterly impact-less film.

All I can really compliment other than the great destruction VFX was the lack of any forced sexual tension, a breath of fresh air when you consider that a shoehorned kiss/sex/etc. scene is basically mandatory in any movie budgeted north of $100 nowadays.

LOVED LOVED LOVED the use of color in the film. Especially in the final fight (blue/orange).

The middle third of the film didn't really drag for me. Plenty of non-Jaeger action like Becket's fight with Striker's pilot and Mako's memories.

Hong Kong was fucking nuts and probably one of my favorite action sequences in any film. It went on and on without getting repetitive. I thought Gipsy being nuclear-powered was pretty clever, being used twice in Hong Kong to get around the EMP and as a second nuke in the ending.

I could probably nitpick some stuff. Would have liked to see a few more minutes of Cherno and Typhoon before they were destroyed. I was fine with them leaving the story at that point, but I wanted to see a bit more, especially from Typhoon. 1-2 more minutes of Striker fucking up the Kaiju in Sydney would have also been cool.

Jaegers vs Jaegers could be amazing for a sequel.. Jaegers vs mecha-Kaijus would also be acceptable.

Loved it.

Just saw it again and I must say the more I watch it the worst it gets, first off Stacker is a dumbass, pure and simple, his plans don't make any logical sense and they got almost every Jaeger destroyed and pilot killed

like sending 2 fucking old jaegers to fight 2 cat. 4s when Striker just got finished fucking up a cat 4. not long before the double event. and grounding Danger, I mean what the fuck was that, you know...... KNOW!! for a fact that your gonna need all the help you can get so don't sending all 4 of your Jaegers put you at an extreme advantage against just 2 Kaijus.....knowing Striker can take down a Category 4 by itself???

Imagine as soon as Otachi poked it's head out of the water it was instantly and mercilessly pounded into submission by Cherno and Gypsy while Crimson proceedes to quickly slice the shit out of it and get finished off but Strikers chest missiles, goddamn Leatherback wouldn't have even gotten the opportunity to use it's EMP blast and then would have had to fight 4 Jeagers instead of just 1

splitting them up like that was just dumb

Knifehead was the first Category 3 Kaiju encountered, deployed to attack Anchorage, Alaska. On its way to its target, Knifehead moves to attack a fishing boat, but is intercepted by Gipsy Danger.

Much longer than I expected, but thankfully it resolved everything. Part of me was worried it was going to end when the Jaegers beat the Mk4s with the EMP.
