Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I think its one of the "I know, I'll exaggerate so I have the MOST controversial gaming opinion!' posts. This thread has been loaded with hyperbole.

Ah, I haven't quite kept up with the thread. I certainly hope this is the case.

For me my controversial points really aren't controversial...

eg; I still like CoD or... I thought GTA IV was perfectly fine lol

Secret of Mana is a mediocre game with flawed mechanics, boring dungeons, and a lame story. The pacing is particularly bad as well.

This makes no sense.

How are dungeons in Secret of Mana boring in comparison to traditional RPGs that utilize random encounters?

How are the mechanics flawed? The game is difficult in some areas, but never impossible, and personal skill plays a large part in success. For an RPG, that's awesome.

- ICO is a horrible game with a stupid ass girl that no brain to do any shit but to hold hand
- GOW sucks after the first one
- Never liked any of the super smash brother games. they are just awfel fighting games. Tobal 2 was more fun than that
- Metal Gear Rising sucks outside the graphics and some flashy moves. invisible walls. horrible story. hell even NG didn't have invisible walls.
- i found the new mario game on WII U is more fun than any mario galaxy game. mario galaxy is probably the most hated mario games ever. i enjoyed mario sunshine more.
- The new killer instinct looks really fun. and i didn't play the first 2 games
- FFX is my fav FF game of all time. 13 is just pure shit
- Okami is a boring game
- i like BF3 story
- i don't know why i keep getting killed in BF3 multiplayer when my ratio in COD is 2 +

Thank you for making this post. Everything added up in the end. I will document this for later use elsewhere on the Internet when the time and place arises.

Hating on stuff you don't like / haven't played / haven't finished and then not backing that hate up with anything that resembles an argument or reason isn't controversial, it's stupid.

LOL @ you guys getting all butthurt.

Give it Chrono Trigger or watever 2d turn based game you love from all them nostalgic feel to a person who only played modern classics and most of them would be saying "its good" or its "ok" not "ERMAGERD BeST GAME EVER" like all them fanbois on the internet.

And yes Bioshock 1 is overated as hell, it was very similar to half life in terms of how the story is told with a silent protagonist with a particular knack for firearms and explosives. There was nothing special about it, it was the same old school FPS gameplay as seen in countless FPSes spiced up with a bit of plasmids. There was no characters like Elizabeth or Ellie to anchor your experience and give the player a human touch as you went from room to room murdering splicers.

GTA is overated. Its a spectacular achievement but overated.

TF2 is pretty bland, and how PC Gamer rated it the best shooter i don't know. In fact L4D is also pretty bland, and most of the time i looked forward to playing as the infected more than as humans cause being human is just piss boring hosing down hundreds of weightless zombies. Infact looking back now, most valve shooters are pretty bland. Portal was pretty bland outside the witty female robot and the portal gimmick wears out pretty quickly. Portal wasn't particularly fun in anyway either and every puzzle felt like a chore to hear the next witty dialogue valve wrote.

Uhhh... spectacular... overrated... spec---

Esport or/and streaming games in general are dumb, I don't see why I would want to see someone play some game when I can play the games myself.

Wow.

Um, anyways, I think the Jagex version of Ace of Spades is actually pretty fun. Too bad they killed the playerbase with their awful updates.

It takes a lot of talent to create an immersive open world for a video game. the best most realised open world is probably the world of red dead redemption.

While GTA is a very well made game it is overated by the general population, even though it has an amazing world it fails a lot of time in being fun and engage the gamer. You know something is wrong with your game if people say "I dont even play the missions, i just muchk around" but mucking around gets boring pretty damn quickly. You jump into the missions and you are faced with ridiculous missions like the Gay Tony helicopter mission or vice city RC helicopter mission where crappy controls, rediculous difficulty forces you to repeat over and over again until you just give up and start murdering innocents on the street again. Thats pretty much how every one of my GTA playthroughs went and i wouldn't consider myself to have short attention span since i play rather hardcore games like Project reality, DOTA and other games quiet often.

Clarifying my case on Bioshock, i just think it was outdated. With all the modern technological marvel in gaming and they choose to tell their (very good) story via a silent generic faceless gun totting protagonist. These type of FPSes belonged in the Doom and Quake Era where story didn't matter and you were merely a generic space marine. But games got a lot more serious and these kinda protagonist/style of FPS don't suffice anymore.

and everyone of my other points stand. Crysis is a just tech demo, absolutely zero care for story or gameplay and 343 ruined halo FOREVA.

and yes Unchartered IS the most OVERATED series i have ever played, after playing Tomb Raider and the Last of Us.

Final Fantasy 7 was overrated, and 8 was much more superior. The only reason people love 7 and hate 8 is that 7 was their first JRPG experience and 8 wasn't a direct sequel.

Esport or/and streaming games in general are dumb, I don't see why I would want to see someone play some game when I can play the games myself.

Why does anyone watch someone play football, or soccer, or watch the olympics?

The draw isn't "watching someone playing video games" for Esports. It's watching someone play video games at an extremely high level of skill.

Watching peewee football is boring. Watching an NFL game is interesting.

I watched a little bit - who did the commentary for Street Fighter? The commentary was excellent but I couldn't help roll my eyes when he talked about who was an emotional player verses an intellectual player. I just don't know if I'm ready to take games that seriously

While we're all hating on GTA I should say that if you take away the juvenile "tee hee, I'm being so very naughty!" novelty You just get a sandbox with meh driving controls and terrible shooting controls.

oh and Yakuza is a better gaming experience than Shenmue

I found Star Wars: KOTOR2 to be a drag... dropped the game after about 20 hours and couldn't keep going. Combat was too easy and sidequests were too difficult to pursue without running into dead ends

I still think the entire Halo series is one of the worst I've ever seen, despite popular opinion. I don't like the cartoony visual style, and think the story is as average and boring as it can get. I am constantly baffled at how popular it is. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is solid, but it's everything else around it that I just can't get into. The game can literally be described as 'Aliens vs. Marines" and there's another universe, with a similar description, I'd much rather see done justice.

Final Fantasy 7 was overrated, and 8 was much more superior. The only reason people love 7 and hate 8 is that 7 was their first JRPG experience and 8 wasn't a direct sequel.

Say what you will about 7, but I don't think people disliked 8 because it wasn't a direct sequel. The game just had some broken gameplay and story details. It's not like 7 is perfect in those regards, either.

My working theory is that people who had no idea the FF series changed as much as it did learned/like the Materia system, and when the Junction system came around they were upset they had to learn a new mechanic.

By no means am I saying 8 is without flaw, but it's much, much better than 7.

4) I'm sick to death of indie games being intentionally pixelated for the "retro" look when in fact it covers up for piss poor art skills and budgets.!
I wouldn't say the 16-bit look is hiding a piss poor art skill, it's just that making a hand drawn game that is visually appealing to a broad audience requires extremely good art skills and a ton more effort. Have you ever animated anything by hand? It's a lot of friggen' work!

And then you look at how much work it takes to make something hand drawn look acceptable (look at what it takes to animate one fighter in Skullgirls) compared to what it takes to make something "retro" look acceptable and well, I think it's pretty hard to argue.

I was sick of the 16-bit look but I grew to accept it, as long as it means the barrier to entry is low enough that some dude can give us Rogue Legacy without it taking five years. :p

- Final Fight: Streetwise was fun.
- With 6 more months of polish and a few adjustments, Sonic 06 could have definitely been a great addition to the Adventure saga.
- The Bourne Conspiracy is one of the best games this generation.
- The 3D Ninja Gaiden games are average at best.
- Journey, while beautiful, is a lousy excuse of a game.
- Bioshock 2 is the best in the series.
- Prince of Persia 2008 is awesome.
- DmC has the best combat in the series.
- The Amazing Spider-Man is a great game.
- Silent Hill 4 has the best scares in the series, with a terrific storyline.
- Wanted: Weapons of Fate is addictive, fluid fun and deserves a sequel.

If 8 is better than 7, I don't think it's for the junction system. Materia felt a bit more elegantly designed for FF, and I found it fun to collect. I was interested in Junction but it fell apart when I learned how broken and grind-y it was. Grinding to stockpile magic to balloon your stats made you never use interesting magic, plus it made equipment pretty meaningless. Battles were just endless chains of summons.

On the other hand, 8's world was pretty interesting until it went really sideways.

Uh, Bioshock was great. Also, you haven't played it and therefore probably don't know that the story and setting are actually pretty decent.

I havent played a Mario game since Mario 64 but for some reason that Mario cat suit looks pretty dope. Maybe because I'm a Jacksonville Jaguars fan?

I think 2007 wasn't 'the greatest year in gaming', not even close.

You very well could be right, but I'd love to hear your counter argument and which year you think stands out.

In terms of the depth of games released that year, it's tough to beat. I don't think it features pinnacles in gaming, but in terms of the depth of solid to really good games, 2007 was a truly standout year.

Final Fantasy VIII is the best Final Fantasy.

Mario games need a hard mode as they are too easy especially to get extra lives.

Fable 2 is a great game and Fable 3 was fantastic.

I feel that this generation has seen a real lack of LOCAL multiplayer games, only the Wii seemed to do it well.

The PS move wouldve been more successful if it were a light gun and Point Blank was available.

Modern day consoles are not child friendly due to so many buttons (mega drive I had when I was 6 only had A,B,C)

To me the PS1 was a boring console, though I can at least see the appeal if you liked JRPGs at the time.
The praise the PS2 gets though blows my mind, it was (again to me) the least appealing console of it's generation by quite a fair margin, it had very little going for it in my mind.
As a result Sony's best consoles in my eyes are the PS3 and both their handhelds which have built up impressive libraries of exclusives.
Kinect has a lot of potential and I hope it can deliver for the X1.
