Pacific Rim |OT| Apocalypse Never

This is the first movie I saw in D-box and I think from now on, I'm going to watch ALL D-box available movies in d-box. It's a ridiculous awesome feeling that really accentuated the fun in an otherwise average movie. I might have even enjoyed Man of Steel had I watched that in D-box.

Really? I saw one D-Box movie and I hated it. I vowed never again. :(

I'm glad to hear that you had a great time, though!

Same! My first DBOX movie too. I couldn't think of a better movie to watch with it. Those rock 'em sock 'em robot battles were just utterly epic.

Going to the theaters on crutches was an awful awful idea. Pacific Rim was a fantastic movie so it worked out. Saw it in 3d and the fights were glorious. Far exceeded my expectations when I honestly had no hype for this at all.

We are cancelling the apocalypse

I saw it last night. An insanely awesome and insanely silly movie. In the same awesome/silly vain as Independence Day. I'm telling everyone I know to go check it out.

I thought the film was so-so. The thing that I was most looking forward to, the fights, were the most disappointing. Night + Rain + 24 FPS = WTF is going on?

On the plus side, the characters were fun, and I appreciated the use of actors that you don't see in every fucking movie. I enjoyed the interplay between the two leads, as well as the comic relief scientist duo.

Was the sound excessively loud in anyone else's theater? I swear it was turned up to distortion levels in mine. My ears were numb afterward. Hope this isn't the new norm.

This movie was just so friggen terrible. I couldn't even enjoy it in a it's so bad it's good kind of way. I kept hearing Jeff Goldblum saying, "Um, now, you do eventually plan to have monsters and giant robots in your monsters vs giant robots movie, right? Hello?"

This was so bad asss.

Soooo damn bad ass. No other movie can ever be called bad ass now. Its like this was made as a homage to my childhood with every imagined action figure fight I was creating in the tub to every monster wreaking havoc sketch I was making in class. I was so wrong about the Jaegers. I was wrong about everything.

Best film I have seen this summer. I can't wait to go again.

Please tell me its tracking great.

well.....it is around the figure people predicted it would....don't know if that is exactly "great"

It's not, at least not domestically, but if you manage to get a couple million friends to go watch it it might :P

I just saw Grown Ups 2 is charting higher. I have never wanted to stand outside of a theater and physically assault a group of people more in my life.

I had the stupidest grin on my face the entire movie. Like, goddamn, I must have looked like a moron.

The script is total bullshit but damn was it hype as fuck.

Like 2/3 of this film was monsters and giant robots.

I don't get the night fight scenes complaints, I got everything just fine. The lighting was amazing, the neons and over-saturated colors. The whole HK sequence just looked incredible.

I realized how WB fucked this one up in marketing. I asked my 9 and 10 year old little cousins if they were going to see Pacific Rim and they stated it was boring. Instead they're excited to see Monster's Inc and Turbo. It looks boring because they think they've seen it all before in Transformers.

What WB should've focused on wasn't only the robots, but just how funny this movie was. They should've featured Charlie Day, Perlman, and even Burn Gorman in every commercial aired on a kids channel. These guys were easily the most marketable and mainstream part of the whole film, especially to kids as most of the humor surrounding them was pretty clean aside from a few cuss words here and there. In fact, every commercial should've ended with a punchline or slapstick joke from Charlie Day and this would have been so much more of a hit. I don't understand why they didn't push Day more.

You can't be serious? Did you go into a coma for half the movie?

Sounds like you need to drag them to a theater. ;P

I was disappointed actually. Just came back from the 3D IMAX showing at Lincoln Square in NY; I really wanted to like it more. The two scientists were unbearable to me, the action was hard to follow at times, and the acting was pretty bad. If you've seen the commercials, you've already seen all the best parts.

Yea I felt the same. Probably would have done better showing some of the campy humor along with possibly more of Mako since it felt like she was basically non existent in the trailers.

Thinking back....idk even if the trailers put focus on her at all tbh

Don't have much money to spend, and they already have their hearts set on Monsters University, which I admit is a good movie too, but Pacific Rim needs the money so much more. :(

I actually don't think Mako would've helped too much, except maybe with the female demographic to show that there are in fact women in this film.

Watched this today, FUCKING AMAZING MOVIE. The fight scenes, the mecha homages and the lore were amazing, this is what live-action mecha movie should be. The Hong-Kong battle was the high of the film for me. THE GRAPHICAL EFFECTS OF THIS FILM WERE NOT OF THIS WORLD, GODDAMN.

Mako and her relationship with Stacker was the heart and soul of the film

Ah, I thought he meant focus solely on Mako's presence. Yeah, if they could have had a trailer just on that father-daughter dynamic, it might've gotten some butts in the seats.

I will say this: because the trailers weren't impressive, it made the movie that much better for me. So...kudos?

What movie did you watch?
There are five fight scenes in a 2-hour movie, and one of them is twenty minutes long. The film opens with a 12-minute battle. Another takes up the entire last act of the movie. There are nine different Kaiju featured in the film.
You're insane.

Maybe my eyes are fucked up, but I've had problems with action scenes in general for the past several years. The one exception was The Hobbit in 48 fps. I'm fine with old action movies though, because there's less things in motion. It's the CG heavy action scenes with lots of animation where everything becomes a blur.

Add night and rain to the mix, and I couldn't even distinguish the Kaijus from one another.

Twin plasmacasters and chest missiles with a body designed for speed. Get some distance and unleash hell from afar. Come at me kaiju bros. The wall of pain awaits.

Piloted by a brooding couple who appear from the aether just when things are going terribly wrong. Anime hair, super reflective glasses & zippers/belts all up in this cockpit. And of course they disappear after the fight so nobody truly knows who they are or where they come from.

Did I mention brooding? Oh so much brooding. They're edgy and cool.
