Movie was god damn amazing. Watched it last night and I still can't stop thinking about it. Gonna go watch it again.

I pray to god there's a sequel.

nope it would stationed on a mobile command center which would be sort of a Jaeger in an of itself (a giant sea turtle)

1. Still couldn't cover the entire world as the Jaegers are too slow to catch the kaiju until they are forced to start walking, aka reach land and start tearing things up.

2. America would commit to that one Jaeger then start building 8 more in secret because that's what we do.

How could 1 Jaeger protect the whole world? It can't be everywhere at once. If its stationed in the US it would take some time for it to reach Australia or Russia if the kaiju attacked there. And let's be real, if there was only 1 Jaeger it would be stationed in the US.

well there is only 1 'portal' right?

They really should build a giant boxing ring or something around there, because why not.

So now I lay in bed each night thinking about giant robots. Is there anything else you guys can recommend that feel similar to Pacific Rim in terms of fights where the mechs and monsters actually feel huge?

I've already seen the following

Big O
End of Evangelion
Gozilla Final Wars
Giant Robo

Quoted for a new page. I need some giant robot action!

Too much ground to cover, and too few resources. If you lost the one Jaeger, you'd also lose the war.

The current ideology of distributed defense for major areas is probably the best way to go about this.

I was wondering what would happen if the humans used nukes to destroy the edges of the tectonic plates themselves. I know the damage to the earth in that area would be pretty heavy. Isn't our side of the breach only being powered by the energy created by the friction of the plates? That's what I took away from it anyways.

Do yourself a favor and check out Gurren Lagann. Its really quite good and it quite literally has the largest mechs/mech fights of any mech anime ever.

hell, why not block the portal rather than build a giant wall. Did nobody on that earth watch stargate?

Noting that the other actors were exhausted and "destroyed physically" by filming in the intensive Jaeger cockpit harnesses, del Toro said: "The only one that didn't break was Rinko Kikuchi, the girl. She never complained... I asked Rinko her secret and she said 'I think of gummi bears and flowers.' I try to do that in my life now."

Something I noticed on my second viewing. Is it really possible for about seven or eight helicopters to be able to lift a Jaeger?

Not the helicopters available right now no. A Chinook can carry around 13 metric tons. Striker Eureka weighs 1,850 tons. So you'd need 142 Chinooks to lift it.

I'm going to assume that if they can build Jaegers with some reaching over 7,500 tons, they have invented some better Helicopters OR the Jaegers had some rockets or something on the feet or back to take the load.

For 8 to carry Eureka though, each would have to lift 462 tons.

I thought about this too, but it looked like Leatherback was examining it the whole time up until the piloted flared his face.

Yeah, Thats what I thought to. It didnt amount to muc.......well it amoutned to the flare gun scene. Which might be the dumbest (in a good way) scene in the movie. But it did introduce the idea that Leatherback was smart enough to want to examine his enemy. Which was very cool

Yeah, I get what you mean, but there's also a side of me that just wants to see other mechs in action. Maybe they could have put up more of a fight before getting taken out. Make it more desperate with more back and forth keeping us in suspense if they were enough to win, then finally have them taken out just when it looks like they won.

Definitly. It's a shame that the two coolest mechs were the ones that had to be fodder. I would have preferred it be Striker Eureka. Having the most powerful Jaeger in the Union being the first to get taken out would be a great "Oh Shit!" moment.

only in this movie one Jeager DID protect the world so wrong.

remember this movie marked the beginning of the double event and who killed BOTH of them, who killed the Cat. 5, who finished off a Cat. 4 by cutting it in half.......TWO TIMES!! who collapsed the rift

If the title of this movie accurately represented what we saw it would be called Gypsy Danger fucks everything up and everyone else either dies or dies later......

One Jaeger to rule them all, One Jaeger to bind them, One Jaeger to bring them all into the darkness spite them

this is that one Jaeger

That's because they only attacked in one place and happened to be were they were located. They only won because they were fighting one on one. When they had to fight two at once they lost an arm and almost a leg.

I just can't see them constantly flying the one Jaeger all over the world.

Australia already got kicked hard enough in the balls by having to put up with the two worst accents in the movie (so Aussie actors can get basically any 'manly' action role except ones playing Australian characters?) so also having our mech get killed in five seconds would be too much pain.

Dai-guard isn't that good, but one thing it shares with Pacific Rim is its treatment of giant monsters as natural disasters that originate from the ocean (much like hurricanes). Also there is a great deal of concern about things like budgets and fixing the giant robot after battles.

It was made by the same team that made Martian Successor Nadesico, which is also a little silly, but is a much more solid show in every possible way. The mecha, for the most part, are not nearly as big. The show in a show (Gekigengar), however, has super-robots that are probably building sized.

Macross/Robotech first gen is a classic. Has great scale. Anyone who is a fan of mecha in general should have seen this basically. Same with Patlabor. First movie is probably the best if you're only going to see one thing. I would pick the TV series and OVAs over the other movies, though.

Caved on the tie-in novelization (don't judge me!!). Basically the movie but the little surprise was in-between chapters was often some fluff about the world presented via government/military reports, newspaper clippings, history book excerpts etc.

Some examples for anyone that cares:

you got more of these?
interesting how gypsy danger is retired after the movie
so i guess if there will be sequel, the events will presumably be happening a few years after the events of the movie

Del Toro already said there will be
a Gipsy Danger 2.0
in the sequel.

Those novelization world-building articles are cool, but I see one error: It was Striker Eureka that took out Scunner when it exploded.

Maybe they just decided to play it safe and give the kills in that fight to both Jaegers?

yeah i got the stupid dubbed version, here in indonesia
i heard even in japan, they got someone else to dub her voice in japanese also, shit is really weird

This explains the weird lip movement during some scenes, a fact I only knew after watching.

The main hero Jaeger receives the deluxe 18" treatment including enhanced sculptural details, attachable chain-sword weapon, and lights on the chest and head.

Stands an impressive 18" tall with articulated neck, shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees. Gipsy is very poseable and includes intricate paint detail to replicate all the battle damage and wear and tear seen on screen.

The over 8" long chain-sword weapon attaches at the forearms and can be wielded on the right or left side.

This is the must have collector's figure from Pacific Rim!

Rinko's Japanese was dubbed over in several asian releases apparently. For the Japan release, they are getting veteran anime VAs to do all the dubbing.

Well... that's just weird then. It didn't look like she was dubbed in the Canadian version but I could be wrong.

If there was anyone's part being dubbed it should have been the Australian pilots...arrghhh!

They should have got aussies dubbing their part for Australian cinemas. On multiple viewings their Australian accents dont actually get any more tolerable.

As for the dubs in Japan, how do they differentiate when Mako is supposed to speak Japanese instead of English when they would always be hearing the dubbed Japanese lines.
