That's a shame. Was looking for some viewpoints on this movie by someone who didn't think this didn't live up as a giant robot movie. Again, not that I'd agree with them, just curious.
I did hear (And agree with) the criticism that the robots didn't use enough weapons, although I guess that might also be what made
the sword reveal so awesome.

I'd also agree that the plot with the scientists feels somewhat tacked-on, if inoffensive. Focusing on the Jaeger pilots may have made it more of a giant robot movie (But on the other hand, it would have made it less of a giant monster movie).

There definitely should have been more fights.

but in terms of plot that wasn't super possible.

especially since someone dies during every fight lol.

Oh jesus...

So I won tickets go to see R.I.P.D tomorrow. It starts at 7:30, and is an hour and change.

There's a Pacific Rim IMAX 3D showing at the same theater...at 10:20.

I have a code to take off most of the cost of the ticket, so it'd be like 5 bucks.

...GAF SAVE ME FROM SEEING THIS MOVIE THREE TIMES

Why in the hell would we do that?

THIS MOVIE DESERVES TO BE SEEN THREE TIMES

THIS MOVIE DESERVES TO BE SEEN THREE TIMES

See it many times, throw a $100 bill in the mail to Legendary but for Christ sakes let it be a sequel!!

DAMN YOU ALL

Another hook is I saw it in two different ways so far:

Planetarium (so it was huge, but 2D. I saw Transformers 2 this way and nearly threw up, but PR was fine)

RealD 3D (Solid)

But not IMAX yet...aaaaaarg

And this is where I saw the Man of Steel world premiere too (King of Prussia), so the theater is boss.

..Fack

Aw fuck, I want this :(

Wanted to like this more than I did, unfortunately it did lose my interest in the last act.

Still tremendous fun in its high points though :) And millions of light years ahead of Transformers...

Going to watch it again this weekend in Imax(2nd time). Haven't doubled dipped with a movie for a long time.

What a fucking shit film. The plot was inane, and the acting was bad beyond belief (wtf kind of Australian accents were those, anyway?) and the dialogue was just ridiculous.

It looked cool though, sure. Pleased this is bombing, more films like this bomb and we might get something with substance instead.

The fuck? Yes, let's hope and pray that the one original property blockbuster bombs so that we don't get anything else like it. Smart.

Yeah, I love the fact that we got Grown Ups 2 because the first one didn't bomb.

It's really not. We've seen this same stupid film a million times before. Just with different characters and robots fighting robots instead of lizard things.

Name one. Just one, real life action film with giant mecha robots fighting giant monsters. Please, name one.

I don't think you understand what "original" means in this context. It doesn't mean "never been done before" or "novel," it means "not based off an existing franchise," which PR most definitely is.

The poster criticised me for saying I hope the film bombed so Hollywood producers would notice and we'd get something "with substance" instead. Why the fuck do I care if it's a new franchise or whatever? I don't. I care about original stories.

Man you really don't get it. I'll indulge you though: Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.

Soooo, which one is the human piloting? Do you know what the definition of a mecha even is?

I don't think you understand just how original Pacific Rim is to the "Hollywood" blockbuster arena....

Sometimes it just really grates on me how most of the populace is just fine with the same old dreck over and over again, and how afraid or even prejudiced they are against anything new and different. sigh.

Pssh we are going to get more Pirates or Transformers.

That is not the lesson they'll take from Pacific Rim bombing. They'll just make more Adam Sandler movies and Transformers, and take less risks on original sci-fi properties. You are going to get far less original stories if PR is a failure.

Cool man. I care about Pacific Rim's story and hope we get more like it!

Isn't it funny how I can state my opinion without sounding like a prick?

oops, nevermind

So I just got back from the midnight premiere over here in Holland. Jesus fucking Christ what an experience. I saw it in IMAX 3D, it was the most fun movie experience I've had in years. There might be a million things you can nitpick about but seriously I can't even begin to care. There is so much love poured into this film and it shows. The action was amazing, the Jaegers incredible, the Kaiju terrifying.. I just, there are no words to describe the awesomeness. Now off to bed, got my seats reserved for tomorrow night (today), can't fucking wait. Incredible experience.

Didn't really like it. Too much time was spent on trying to develop these boring characters, who just ended up being very stale. A bunch of dialogue I didn't care for, and the only good parts are the robot fights, in which case they showed most of it in the trailers considering how short the fights are.

Whenever i see a movie at the theater, i try to figure out what aspect ratio they used, yesterday while watching PR it looked like 1:78... anyone else agree on this?... i really hope so because black bars are a huge pet peeve of mine.

Are you even listening to yourself? You want original stories but you don't care if they're based on existing properties, but the new ideas that haven't been done yet and thus are actually original, you don't want? What the fuck? What kind of "original story" are you going to get out of an adaptation of Spider-Man, or the 4th retelling of Superman's origin, or another Pirates of the Caribbean movie, or the next Smurfs?

Pacific Rim bombing doesn't mean we won't get more robots VS monsters movies. It means we won't get more NEW and ORIGINAL ideas, period. It's a gamble, it's a risk, and Hollywood can't stand either of those things. So if this fails, every suit in the Los Angeles area will point to it and say originality does not make money, time to produce more sequels and adaptations. That is a BAD THING, to be clear.

Just came back from seeing this again. You guys weren't lying, I usually hate 3D and avoid it like the plague because everything is blurry or off, but here I enjoyed it. A lot. Part of it was that I knew where to focus my attention during the fights, and could even catch a few more details. For example, small hatches on GD close before they enter the water, and a lot of stuff (pistons and shit) are animating constantly on every Jaeger, even on the borders of the screen.

Man, this movie. I want to watch it 100 more times! I just can't get enough of it, bland characters or not.

So is PR a failure or what?

How much money did it make over the weekend?

Edit: So if Box Office Mojo is to be believed, it made about 45 million domestically and 53 million outside the U.S. for a total of about 98 million.

Yeah, it's not going to be a failure long term when factoring in ww sales and dvd / blu-ray, but the question now is will it make enough to warrant a sequel. I hope so....

Floppy movies have had sequels but I doubt this will. Wasn't the movie made to pretty much stand alone according to del Toro?

I'm just flabbergasted that this movie, regardless of how good or bad it is, made less than an Adam Sandler movie. That's.... wow....
