My second viewing kinda sucked. There was a group of girls who sat right in front of me in the otherwise empty theater and kept looking at their phones throughout the movie and whispering to each other. And it was sporadic enough where I couldn't really say anything. Oh well.

Anyway, watched in 3D this time after seeing it 2D over the weekend. I still loved the movie and thought the 3D was pretty great. I guess I'm in the minority in that I very much enjoyed the characters and their plots. I especially liked Ron Perlmans character and Mako. I would love to learn more about them. Hopefully the art book or comic will help with that.

The fights were even more amazing. Not sure if it was the 3D or because I was in a different theater with a better sound system. Maybe both?

Will find out next week when I see it in 2D again at this new theater.

Before it even came out Del Toro said they started writing the sequel, and since its release he's revealed at least two concepts for it. This is obviously a film that can stand alone (thank god, I hate it when movies in a series don't have actual endings) but there's plenty of room for more stories in the universe.
 
What are the chances that the first disc release of this movie will be the directors cut/extended scenes version? I'm really hoping for it because it seems like so much that might've been cut out of the movie.

Cool. Like I said, even if it does flop chances are there will still be a sequel.

Kinda surprised word of mouth hasn't helped this movie more.

Robot Jox.

While it *doesn't* feature giant creatures, there are giant robots piloted by
humans who fight each other for control of land in a futuristic world.

Fun movie. The stop motion is pretty well done and considering the movie had a small
budget, it's very well done IMHO.
 
Just saw the movie. While I can't say the movie is good, I can't call it terrible either. It obviously had a lot of love put into it. Just not a lot of care put into story, character, and dialogue. I honestly felt like I was dumped into the finale of a trilogy of movies with the first two movies condensed into twenty minutes. Or for another analogy, I felt like I watched the last three episodes of a twenty six episode anime.
 
Absolutely loved the fiction created, loved the Kaiju designs, sorta underwhelmed by the Jeager designs. Feels like this really needs to be a series, the universe created in Pacific Rim can go in any direction.

No, I completely agree with you. It was hard to tell what was going on in pretty much every fight scene.

Also this. They always did a quick cut into the cockpit that was so fast that you didn't have time to process what the heck was going on.

Del Toro said he shot it like that purposely to show the sense of scale. Wide, distant shots
of giant creatures tend to miniaturize the characters otherwise.

A very good example is the picture posted on this page of Godzilla standing in
a crater in the center of Tokyo.

I personally wanted to see more daylight battles.
 
I thought the movie was amazing. Incredible sense of scale and weight in the fights. Totally delivered on what I was expecting. Can't wait for the BR. :)
 
Saw it for the third time tonight.

I'm DONE doing my part. Y'all will have to help the movie at the box office now.

one thing i've noticed is that people seem to not realize this movie is del toro's boyhood dream of making a kaiju movie
of course it's going to be full of cliches, the whole genre is full of cliches

you're not supposed to expect 2deep4me shit when watching kaiju

also, you guys knew del toro cut about an hour's worth of footage right? man i can't imagine what we're missing with that 1 hour...
plenty of movies are 3 hours long now, why couldn't this be 3 hours long too...

Any specific thread you're referring to? I think I remember Solo and artist not seeing eye to eye in the past.
 
Directors cut for this movie would suck unless there is more footage of the jaegers/kaiju they cut out

Nobody got time for these characters. I was glad with the 2 hour length

GDT is very picky about not making his movies more than 2 hours long, so he always hovers around that runtime.
 
some of these post are ridiculous or maybe i feel literally sad if someone doesn't like it, which i understand but this is such a tight well put together little movie. even if you didnt enjoy it i appreciate this film for doing a lot. every scene is chuck full of stuff to look at and observe, the dialogue and the cliche characters actually helps us understand them quickly without a 30 minute stare contest for "deeper meanings" or "character arcs".everyone has a certain attitude or pose or swagger that tries to tell you more without saying it, it boils down to everyone needs to gather together and saving the fucking world. i know we are watching a movie but if any movie out there didnt need much character arc it would be this one, because then we would loose focus of its core. my god this world is a fun place to be in and i want to see more, it truly saddens me when we get people like polari or shamrock just sharting on it because i think there is alot of love on display here for it to just be discredited like that. then again GDT said this movie is focus more for a younger crowd not for us jaded adults.

i dont know i guess i am just a fan boy :/

I think del toros made crap films since devils backbone and this is his best since then

(Pans labyrinth was good tho)
 
You know a little nitpick that has been bothering since working on a few more avatars,
Why do the Gipsy pilots get such generic pilot suits? Australians and Russians were great and China had the coolest looking.
Even the suits that weren't just a last minute thing, were plain white versions of the same suit.

Pretty much. It's not perfect but for 2 hours it puts a big smile on your face and you leave the theater satisfied.

haha its funny because i really like the gipsy suits white and black, i thought austalians were kinda boring :/

This movie was amazing and visually spectacular and I loved it.

I can't wait for a 3D-BRD.

That is all.

It's also made me thirsty for another Cloverfield or Godzilla film.

I really need to see Robot Jox. I love stop-motion animation.
 
Holy shit balls, son. IMAX 3D if you can do this. Unheard of experience. That screen is as giant as the mechs. Speakers destroyed my hearing though.
