Being niche isn't enough. My expectations from GDT come from Pan's Labyrinth, I figured he could pull off a great film with the money and premise, but it was a lazy popcorn flick you watch because there is almost literally nothing better or convenient at the time. I've contributed to the numbers this film has pulled in, which is unfortunate because I feel it doesn't deserve my money.
Of course I don't mean it literally, but I'm not particularly happy with the guy when he has such a budget to rock with and cool genres to explore, yet this is the end product. It does make me want to slap him.

I got a chance to see this movie today with a friend. We both really enjoyed it. Maybe not the greatest movie of all time, but it's a lot of fun.
When I was younger I was a very big Godzilla fan (so much so that I went to Godzilla conventions in Chicago several times) and this movie did scratch the new giant monster movie itch that's I've had for some time. Hopefully the American Godzilla movie next year is good as well.

It wasn't the ultimate kaiju movie, but it's still a very good one that comes close to ultimate in the second half. The Hong Kong and
action scenes were outstanding and will satisfy any Godzilla or mecha fan.
I think the potential for an expanded universe a la Star Wars is enormous, and even if they can't afford a prequel, there must be some novel or comic or anime to fill the huge gap between the origin and the film. I didn't know it would occur in media res to the extreme it did. You have a scene (the first fight where
) that takes place quite a while after the first jaegers are made, and THEN flash forward another five years and explain all this cool shit that took place in the middle! It was unbelievable how out of place this movie felt - it's like watching Return of the Jedi as your first Star Wars movie. This IS the universe's ROTJ - the origin story is like ANH, the hopeless period where the Americas are getting demolished is like ESB, and Pacific Rim is the finale with a happy ending. I love this universe and I want at least one more property to be created to flesh it out.
Lastly, some spoilery nitpicks.
Otherwise, my biggest problem with the movie was the extremely long sequence with Raleigh and Mako in Hong Kong, nearly 40 minutes without any kaiju or jaeger. It was bad pacing and the only time I felt emotional for them was the
. They could've replaced the martial arts scene (why do you need to know martial arts to fight monsters in a hulking robot that boxes anyway?!) with another kaiju battle and then the pacing would be good.
I give it a 4 out of 5. I liked Man of Steel a little better, and I want somebody to write a prequel novel!

The implication kaijus destroyed the dinosaurs was unnecessary, the idea a kaiju literally hunting down Newton was far-fetched, and the Newton's cradle was one of the dumbest scenes in history.

It's kinda unknown what the hell Newt was talking about beyond the Kaiju just coming during the Mesozoic; all we know is that they came and didn't colonize because the atmosphere was not right.
I think the kaiju may have been some of the giant sea creatures of the time. I also have suspicions that may have been a set up for a Godzilla crossover. He was the one sent during the time of the dinosaurs and has grown dormant since then, just getting bigger.

The premise for the movie was great and it had so much potential. I felt strangely satisfied seeing monster aliens getting the crap beaten out of them by robots.
But other than that, the rest of the movie was filler material with forgettable (sometimes even annoying) characters and unoriginal cliches. Some of the pilot matchups aren't very convincing either.

i dont think the money and world was wasted, there is only so much you can do with a 2 hour film. though i see your point i just cant stop loving this movie even the cliche characters. what this movie needs is another fucking sequel!
i thought the 3d was actually really good, i have seen it twice with 3d and twice in 2d and i actually preferred the 3d version.
just went today for my 4th bomb run with the co-workers, they liked it but pretty much round it down to that it was missing "something" that being said i cant get enough i need to watch this movie in d-box!

Thought it was just okay. The mechs and monsters and the attention to detail they had was amazing, but outside them, none of the characters apart from the commander clicked with me. I mean, Raleigh and Mako's actors just didn't do much for me even though I think they were given quite a lot to work with. They did great with their fight scenes though!

the real travesties are the "aussies" and burn gorman. holy shit. they belong in the transformers franchise. gorman reminded me of that shitty seth mcfarlane bot in hellboy 2 that was trying so hard to be comic relief. gdt doesn't get humor....
i think the scene that won me over to this film though was the first time raleigh is suiting up with his brother. and that theme starts and then you just see this huge ass mech. i was sold.

There was more than enough "giant robots beating up monsters" in Pacific Rim. Any more and it would've gotten into Man of Steel "mind numbing destruction" territory.

There were two real fights, squashed so tightly together that they felt like one - at the end of the second act. It was pretty disappointing.

I just saw Pacific Rim and I thought 'That's it?' Everyone on the Internet said it was something great, a geeky-yet-deep-movie and I ended up being bored and thinking of how everything was wrong or not believable/cliché in every scene.
The first half of the movie (where you get to know the story and the characters) was sort of decent (nothing memorable but it could have been worse) and if the whole movie was like that I would have liked it better but then it evolved into non-stop fighting, with piercing lights and bombastic sound effects everywhere. I couldn't care less how much money you can throw at CGI - it reminded me more of a video game than a film and I felt like I had been lied to.
I miss the pre-Avatar James Cameron.

People saying it failed to be a cheesy and lighthearted homage to monster and robot movies with colorful visuals and great SFX need to rewatch the movie as well, because it never intended to be anything else.

On the contrary, they need to expand their horizons and watch another giant robot show. People who are calling it a live action Evangelion are making it clear that Evangelion was their first (and probably only) giant robot show.
Yeah, it was never trying to be deep, nor did it ever try to come across as deep in trailers. It didn't have a love story either. The parallels to Evangelion are mostly about how the robots are being controlled, with the mind, and synching up certain brain waves or whatever. It was never going to be a psychological deconstruction of Kaiju tropes and anyone who told you so was wrong or tried to interpret stuff that wasn't there.

A number of sequences warrant 3D in my opinion. IMAX is worth it for the sound alone.
