Anyone that has watched the film has seen how the Kaiju demolished the Jaegers in the final battle. They succeeded due to the nuke blast. Plus if they kept stopping them at the portal the Kaiju would just evolve over time and start demolishing the Jagers even if it was 4 against 1. Kaiju's have a lot of maneuverability underwater, the Jaegers do not.
Submarines and military ships? They are slow compared to the Kaiju.

Why not nuke them? Dropping a nuke each and every time a Kaiju appears doesn't sound very smart. You'd cause damage no matter where you drop a nuke. In the ocean it'd be environmental damage, once a Kaiju rises out of the water it will be too close to a city.

Why not always use sword? The Kaiju's blood is toxic and swords will cause too much spillage. This is why blunt force trauma is preferred. Even along the coast there would be to much toxic spillage if blades are used.

Going tonight to see it in IMAX with my sister. She's really depressed, so I figured I'd take her to a movie to get her mind off of things.

This will be showing #2 for me, with showing #3 scheduled for next weekend [IMAX again]. That will be $60 [$80, including the ticket for my sister] that I will be contributing to this movie.

I regret nothing!

This movie was very entertaining. Damn shame its a domestic bomba. Its my big budget action movie of the summer so far. Better than MoS and IM3, and probably even Star Trek ID and I enjoyed those movies to varying degrees as well.

Agreed on everything 100%. I just saw it for the third time, and I actually like it more every time I see it. My favorite movie of the year by FAR. I can't wait to own this on blu-ray. I wish more people were going to see this, it saddens me that we most likely won't get another one. :(

I can't get behind this one.

Was there a single moment in the movie that indicated they cared about the toxic blood spillage when trying to kill a Kaiju? In fact, was there ever an on-screen killing of a Kaiju that was done with blunt force and not missiles, plasma cannon, sword, etc.? In the battle in Hong Kong, they ripped out the Kaiju's pouch for spitting toxic fluids and just flung it. I don't think they were ever concerned with spilling toxic shit anywhere. Their primary focus was to kill the Kaiju.

I think there is a chance that someone will consider doing a remake in seventeen years or so (it could take much less time than this or maybe even there could be a real sequel, if China and Japan save the day). This is the amount of time it took for there to be serious discussion about remaking Waterworld, which was something of a flop.

The fight in Australia, there was no blood spillage.

The Hong Kong battles, they were starting to get desperate. They had never had to deal with two Kaiju at once before.

Orochi was spitting acid, not necessarily toxic.

Horrible, just horrible reasoning for all your stuff, you definitely don't understand what logic is, not that it's logical to build big robots in the first place, but even if you introduce some rules so you could have mechs vs. monsters at all, you don't do what Pacific Rim did with the Kaiju portal.

Hint:
if we can build mechs to go that deep, we can put thousands of mines that deep too and just keep dropping them from ships. The only way the intercepting Kaiju at the portal idea would not have been plausible would be to just have it open randomly on the ocean floor, you can't defend all the oceans simultaneously, but no, they had to open it in the same exact place every time.

That is as idiotic as showing an F-22 flying into a kaiju firing its guns.
 
Saw the movie a third time tonight! Continues to make me giddy just thinking about it.

About the disbelief thing; my friend who also thought the film was a bit shit was mostly raving about how ridiculous some things were while I thought nothing of the sort. Funny how that stuff works.

Agh! Stop spoiler tagging stuff that's not a spoiler - it's like you're begging people to not read it. We have a spoiler thread specifically so people don't have to worry about it here.

Anyway, your idea about parking ships over the rift and continually dropping mines into the ocean presumably until the end of time? Genius. You should get a job with the PPDC - that's like a Wall of Life-tier idea right there. Kaiju are writhing masses of brute force and animal instinct that continually learn from their mistakes. Maneuvering past a series of depth charges is basically a non-issue after throwing a few Kaiju at the problem.

There's no problem with you not liking the movie, but don't invent faults where there aren't any.
 
I made the mistake of rewatching Char's Counterattack the night before watching this (I was in a giant robot mood and that night the theater had a fire drill just as the movie started). Basically it only made me see the faults between a very well thought out world of with giant robots and the world of PR.

Specifically
why conventional weapons weren't used alongside the jaegers.You look at Gundam and they use all sorts of weapons but here it seems they only used hand to hand combat which is probably why they had so much trouble.
I understand that it provide a more visceral experience for fights but I had some trouble suspending my disbelief.

It was a cool movie nonetheless and I'll always be a fan of giant robots fighting shit. I just wish it was all fleshed out more.

Also,
the triplets deaths...was I the only one that didn't really feel much? It was sad but then I realized they literally hadn't said anythingt the entire movie. In fact, the extent of their appearances were them playing basketball and them watching Mako lose control
 
I saw the movie on friday night, in 3D. This movie was pretty good in 3D, all the HUDs and interior shots were sick. The movie payed Homage to Japanese Kaiju movies and american monster movies (It even stated that after the credits, to Ray Harryhausen, and Ishirō Honda) Yes it did borrow a lot of elements from Evangelion. Other than the fight scenes and the backstory. The character development and some of the acting was bad, the comic relief was way over the top. I felt they focused too much on the battles and special effects and not much time on anything else such as plot, character development, pace, etc.

I think the planes being smashed out of the air and doing little damage to the opening Kaiju was supposed to imply that our current technology was no match for the monsters. Only huge punches are.
 
Saw this today on IMAX. This movie just cemented my stance on never watching another western action film ever again on the Big Screen. I don't understand what's wrong with this directors. ZOOM that fucking camera out, Jesus. They had moments where it would have been awesome(

)It could have been on some Godzilla shit right there(Oh, a movie based on that genre that had no zoomed fight scenes)but no, lets ZOOM the fuck in. Look at Asian Cinema for Christ sake's. I know what the hell is going on when I watch their action flicks. This movie had some moments were you could "see" but man, is fucking Transformer's all over again. Besides that, it was fucking fun. The score sucked major balls, but the audio was good.

As an Australian, the Australians in this film were the worst thing ever put to screen.

Whatever the focus-group-approved Australian accent is that Americans seem to crave is going to destroy whatever good will that new Max Max game got by changing it's lead to an Aussie. Hope they use a real one.

I laughed a lot at their accent in the second viewing. Mostly because the young dude's accent tend to derail into a scottish accent as he speaks.

You shouldn't complain, I'm from Hong Kong, and the movie managed to have the HK locals speak in totally different language. (Mandarin instead of Cantonese) When that came on during the movie I could hear the whole audience sighing. Ah Hollywood.

I still absolutely love the movie though.

But the good news is, it's sitting at 178 million WW and still has to open in some of the bigger markets like China. With the eventual blu-ray release i'm fairly sure it'll make it's money back so bomb averted.

Russian accents were also horrible. Characters were so generic I'm not sure why they just didn't cast from the proper region. They could have at least got that right. Outside of the big fights, everything in this movie felt slapdash and just not caring about the details.
 
This has been the biggest surprise I've seen in quite a few years. No it's not perfect but it is a very fun and enjoyable movie.
 
$178 million worldwide in 10 days is actually really solid for this kind of new I.P. niche movie. Should surely pass the budget of $190 million. Compare that to the Lone Ranger which is @ $147 worldwide after 19 days and a $215 million budget.
 
Doing my part worldwide here in the UK by canceling the apocalypse again in a couple minutes! Pretty surprised at how many people there are here to watch on a Monday midday as I was expecting to be the only one in the theater. :D
 
Just saw that there's an 18" Gipsy Danger toy coming out and some 370$ monstrosities, but somehow... there's still not a single Cherno Alpha in any size to be found? Fuck :(

Yeah, it's not a bomb, but it most likely won't be getting any sequels either. The budget was 190m but after you factor in marketing the costs were quite a bit more. That will all be made back on DVD / BR sales, but I'm sad to say that this is probably the only Pacific Rim movie we will ever be seeing. That sucks, because the idea and universe had so much potential to be a franchise. I'm just so glad we got this one though. It's literally my favorite movie in years, and one I'll be watching the shit out of once I get it home.

I saw it three times and I even dragged a few people to see it, including my mom, so I did my part to make it a success.

I won't be so sure of this it's possible Legendary might choose to build on the franchise. Just look at the way Hellboy wasn't an immediate success as well.
 
It depresses me how people are not all rushing to see this movie. What's even worse is that when I asked my friends and family why haven't they seen it's because they forgot it existed. This movie has had really shitty marketing.
 
man what a let down. i was expecting big things...but overall i just found the majority of it boring and cheesy (in a bad way, i know alot of it was intentional). looks real pretty though.

(also, fuck post-credits scenes - i had no idea until i read about it on twitter the day after. thankyou youtube.)
 
I watched this yesterday in 3D and on DBOX moving, vibrating seats. Oh my god! It was such an amazing experience. You could feel every impact in the fights. This is the best way to watch this amazing movie. My brother and I were completely blown away.
 
Saw it in 2D with my husband over the weekend. I really enjoyed it for what it was. Sure, the acting from the lead character wasn't good, but I loved me some Idris. If they do a prequel, I would love to see more of his story as he was infinitely more interesting than that other dude. It was campy and fun, and I was never bored. Surprisingly, my husband didn't like it nearly as much as I did.

My only gripes are of course the lead character's acting, the ease of which the other two jaegers went down, and that eyerolling part where the damn bulldog is barking after they've been successful.

I remember thinking when I saw Gipsy Danger carrying the ship through the streets of Hong Kong, "Why the hell don't these things come with a melee weapon?" I wish they would have brought out the sword a little sooner.

Everyone keeps saying this about the lead actor, but I've seen the movie three times now and I think he was great in the role. I mean, his character isn't supposed to be anything other than what he portrayed it as, and I honestly didn't have any problems with his acting. In fact, to be truthful, I thought he did a good job. I thought the entire cast did a great job.

I guess I'm just not as critical as most other people are?
