This is wonderful, and brings us one step closer to the sequel we so crave!

Pardon my attitude, but suck it, people who wanted this movie to bomb hard!

Also hasn't opened in China yet, which is a huge market. I wonder if their cut has more of the Chinese team.

Theaters usually take more of a cut in China though. Used to be as high as 80% in the past, 55-60% is more likely now I believe.

am i the only one who thinks it's not gonna do well in china?
i mean crimson typhoon went down so quick, pretty sure it's gonna leave some bad impressions

thats what i was thinking.

there is a recent trend of editing movies just for China though.

added extended fight scene with Crimson Typhoon for the China release?

the chinese love their transformers robots. maybe thats enough already to lure them into pacific rim.

What I want most from a potential sequel is a larger stable of Jaegers (I think this can be supported through the current plot direction post-Wall). Was kinda sitting through the movie thinking damn, Gipsy Danger Omega Version is going to pop up or they're going to have to make a 6th gen Jaeger but ultimately the trials they were facing prevailed (along with the short time frame).

Crazier designs and crazier quirks would be cool. Maybe even a rogue Jaeger helmed by Chau, though I think he was the weakest part of the film. Also Brawler Yukon 2.0 plz.

There are a lot of tropes of the sort I'd like for them to tackle. Combining Jaegers could be a cool thing to do at the climax of the film.

I'm part of the no-problem, I watched the movie 5 times, with friends, my siblings, parents, a date I ignored (because he said we would watch any movie I wanted, so I chose PR teeheehee). I love the movie, I know it's not perfect but I just love it.

It's pretty popular in Mexico, every showing I went to was full. And people screaming and shouting in the same scenes (different showings) was awesome, specially the Leatherback fight, Gipsy using the freighter ship, Otachi's wings, and sword attack.

I liked this movie so much that I've already seen it thrice and I plan on buying the BluRay when it comes out, even though I don't own a BluRay player and I don't plan to. I will also be buying it digitally.

I would do pretty much anything to support a sequel.

Great news about the international numbers. Just saw this on Sunday in 3D and absolutely loved it. This weekend I want to see it in imax and I have a nearby real imax screen, intended to watch it in imax the first time but schedule with my friends didn't line up.

So glad it's doing so well international. The numbers it's doing for being an original IP are encouraging. Going to see it again today.

I feel like this movie's biggest mistake was to try and gratify domestic audience, which cost them a struggle internationally. I mean if you want some legs in china, you shouldn't bloody have killed Crimson. Abstinence of japanese jaeger in the endgame may make respective market difficult to penetrate now - one country to love kaiju monsters and mechas to death.

Now if a sequel is to be made, the company better understand which society is more willing to suspend their disbelief for massive machines and monsters - forget Gispy 2.0 and concentrate on other jaegers.

in hindsight, you knew china wasn't gonna live long when their robot was piloted by the chinese olympic basketball team without Yao.

I was just thinking about this earlier. Perhaps the movie could have the "Fuck yeah! 'Murika wins bitches! We're number one! Oh and our allies are cool too... Japan, Australia, who loves ya? Pssssh Russia and China? lol communism. Now watch number 1 smash this Kaiju with our fists of freedom and capitalism..." sorta vibe to it in other regions.

This movie is amazing, seen it twice both in Imax 3D. It has its flaws but so far my movie of the year. One thing I noticed at the end, when Gipsy Danger passes through the breach, doesn't it look like their inside a Kaiju? Kinda of reminds me of the phazon planet from Metroid Prime 3.

I wish Cherno and Typhoon would have gotten more fight time and one or two Kaiju kills, before they were taken down.

This kinda bugged me too i feel that they hyped the Russian crew with the whole "no breach in the wall in the 6 years they have been active" then they went out in a whimper.

Also i think Elba's return in a Jaeger was a missed opportunity. They should have ditched the kid with the shitty aussie accent and outfitted Strikers cockpit for a single pilot then have him go out in a blaze of Kaiju killing glory. They could have had him single handily defending Gypsy while they enter the breach before being overrun. I'm talking an epic Skurge the Executioner holding the bridge moment here.

What are the stats for Godzilla? How tall/heavy is he compared to Gipsy?
Gipsy Danger's size seems to have been changed before the movie was released; initially she was 88 meters tall and 7,080 tons, but other figures have it at 79 meters tall and 1,980 tons.

Godzilla depends on the Godzilla you're talking about. Showa Godzilla is 50 meters tall. Heisei Godzilla started out 80 meters tall, and later became 100 meters tall. Godzilla is insanely heavy in comparison to Pacific Rim's kaiju and jaegers; Showa is 20,000 tons, Heisei is 50,000 and then 60,000. Millenium Godzilla films wouldn't stop freaking rebooting, so he varied there from 50 meters to 100 meters depending on the film.

The difference in weight thing gets even weirder if you look at other monsters; Gamera is 80 meters tall, but is only 120 tons. A fucking blue whale weighs more than Gamera.

I think that was done purposefully to show how dangerous these Cat 4 Kaiju were and that things were really ramping up toward full invasion. Not only did they send two, they sent two that were designed to take out the Jaegers that were still left standing. EMP head being the secret weapon that would shut the current best of them down.

Remember, Gipsy was gone for years. They hadn't seen it for a long time, so its capabilities were basically unknown to the aliens. Then it also had some new tricks up its sleeve, aka the badass sword.

I posted this in the other thread. But the first time watching I really expected that Pentecost would reveal a restored Coyote Tango to carry the bomb solo to the breach, assisted by Gipsy and Striker.

Right. That and the fact that they had never faced 2 Kaiju, let alone category 4s, at the same time. They were facing one every few weeks or so before the interval between attacks started decreasing and then they got 2, then eventually 3 at the end.

I really wish the movie had done more with their characters. They could have at least let them kill one of the Kaiju before they were destroyed.

Definitely a case of telling and not showing. I wonder if it was a budget limitation or simply a creative choice.

I'm not sure, but one of the things I didn't care for is how Gypsy Danger pretty much killed all the Kaiju on its own.
