Fighting Games Weekly | July 22-28 | Life's A Beech

I often hear these past few days about how SFIV is dead or we should let it die. After seeing the attendance number for the last EVO, I must have missed something, so if some kind soul could explain this.
Low level play in the game is generally not fun to watch. Higher level play is.

The thing about SFIV is that it has the lowest barrier to entry of any of the FGs. Yes, it ramps up very substantially, but you can play the basic game without needing a ton of experience or execution. That's why you get the most tournament entrants for SFIV at almost every FGC event.

SFIV, is though, getting up there in years. But the constant updates are helping to keep it fresh on the tournament scene. And Capcom's made it clear, whatever their initial next-gen fighting game will be, it likely won't be SF5.

Thank god you showed me that again to remind myself that I'm still a decade younger at LEAST than most of those guys. LOL

you're still OG

sorry guys theres a bunch of hilarious images of Rodman at a fashion show and I couldn't help myself

About VxG, do we even know when, where and if there will be a stream of the event?

Couldn't really find anything on their site after a quick look.

Capcom is streaming the Capcom games themselves and Bifuteki has the other stream IIRC

Can someone 'shop those pink sunglasses on my avatar?

Pretty sure today is the casino royalle event and tomorow the tourney starts dont know if the casino royalle thing will be streamed though.

The majority of the people who signed up for AE2012 in EVO and other majors don't really care about the game and haven't been playing it a lot. They signed up to kill time before playing the games they cared about. It's not so much that the game is dead as that we are long overdue a SF5 and all these updates are actually doing nothing but accelerate SF4's demise. That's what happened with AE2012, people complain about AE being a broken mess but people were spending a lot more time and effort in it than AE2012. It's pretty shocking that Ono fails to understand that; people are willing to relearn games only if the game is new. Not if it's the same game being rehashed except with nerfs screwing you up.

Combofiend mentioned that a lot of changes are going to be made just to shake things up with each character. Together with the right system changes, it could make things a lot better.

Or not, we'll see.

That's the problem, USF4 will at best shake things up. When we never needed a shake up in the first place. We aren't getting better art, we aren't getting better animation, we aren't getting better netcode, we aren't getting single player contents to get more causals in. SF4 was a crude game that aged badly, Ono had a lot of unfinished business and unanswered questions about how we can make fighting games still relevant in the modern age. Instead he acts as if he's already a superstar, that SF4 is the best game ever made and he had the luxury to recycle SF4's dated engine into SFxT. What's shocking is that he hasn't learnt at all from his failures, did that SFxT patch change anything about how people feel about the game?

"The majority of the people who signed up for AE2012 in EVO and other majors don't really care about the game and haven't been playing it a lot."

Yet it still had the most exclusive players.

"SF4 was a crude game that aged badly after MvC3"
Apples and oranges.

"did that SFxT patch change anything about how people feel about the game?"
Some people still think there is infinite jab pressure and rolls cannot be punished.
No matter the improvements, you cannot force people to care. With SF4, they play it and care already , so not a similar situation

People have stopped caring for SF4 ever since AE2012. "Improvements" based on rebalacing and mechanics changes are all opinions, not facts. USF4 can remove unblockables and change the wake up game, but that doesn't necessarily lead to a better game, the strategies will just be different.

I'm trying to get into Blazblue more seriously and I guess I need to get the PS3 version. I have all 3 games but I messed around with them more than anything. Somebody help me with choose a character. I prefer someone who can zone and may be more defensive.

I would say Platinum or Rachel.

Is she combo heavy? Can I get away with keeping characters out? Characters I am looking at also is Makoto and Platinum.

Also PS3 community still playing online?
Why in the world would you be looking at makoto but yes Plat can work as well.

PS3 is active

and almost every single character in BB is combo heavy

Makoto is the opposite of what you're looking for. She wants to get in, slap people with her tail, then punch them in the mouth.

Lambda is definitely what you're looking for if you want to keep people out, but as Blazblue is a game with airdashing and airblocking, the way you go about it is a bit more active and aggressive than in Street Fighter. You pretty much have to keep moving yourself while maintaining distance and pressure.

Reason for Makoto is more about I think the character looks cool.
Well, yeah, which is why I sometimes poke around with her myself.

Oh right, as for Lambda combos, a lot of it involves popping people into the air then doing f+D, D, d+D, D, jump, D, D, d+D, D, double jump, D, D, d+D, D, qcb+D or hcb,f+D.

I tend to find a lot of her stuff to be more straightforward than other combos in the game, not even counting the fact you're hitting either C or D a lot.

Well, thanks to Aksys' amazingness, the tournament got even better!
So Mike and Aksys are donating a bunch of BlazBlue goodies to the cause.
So now we're getting 10 Juubei plushes and maybe 10-20 BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma posters!

So now 1st place for BlazBlue is guaranteed the Noel Nendroid, a Juubei plush, and a BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma poster.
If Koogy's ok with it, 2nd place will get the Fraternity shirt, a Juubei plush, and a BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma poster.
3rd place will receieve the Juubei plush and BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma poster.

In addition, Mike said it's ok to spread it across the games, so Persona 4 Arena and Guilty Gear XX Accent Core + winners will also receive a Juubei plush and BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma poster, in addition to the prizes already established!
2nd place finishers in those games are also guaranteed the Juubei plush and BlazBlue Chrono Phantasma poster!

So there'll still be a ton left even after all that, so I don't even know how to distribute them out from there...
Didn't expect this at all, so gonna need some suggestions, cause there are still a bunch.

If you haven't signed up yet, you really need to!

That's great that you're getting so much support. If I had time, I would learn the game right now and join, since it's just sitting on my shelf.

BB. I don't own P4A because
I don't want to spoil P3 and P4's story.

I would play Elizabeth in P4A anyway, so I imagine I would just be sad at how abysmal she is.

Don't think elizabeth is that big of a handicap at our level of play. The only people that would give you super amount of trouble is mitsuru and theres like only 2 of them on gaf (never seen godbeard play).

I play yukiko and I can hold my own against our yu/mitsu. (fuck slabs though). I'll probably scrub-yu the whole tourney since all his shit is so basic and he can get away with so much stuff if you aren't invested into the game.
