FEZ 2 (possibly?) cancelled | Aka: Phil Fish acts like a 5 year old on Twitter

It's called having thick skin. Can't take the heat stay out of the kitchen.
It's funny that bullying, racism, transphobia and homophobia are all trending topics nowadays, and you'd have the gall to reply with this.

Hey could you post your email address and social media handles along with details on things you've worked on that you're proud of?

An experiment just came to mind.

its kind of startling to see that people are going the "he should have known how to deal with the assholes and harsh nature on online criticism" route.. instead of criticizing the absolutely disgusting internet behavior that is going on..

But Phil is a willing participant of that 'disgusting internet behavior.' That's the main thing here. More than anything else, people don't like Phil trying to cast himself as the victim.

Oh wow. I think he has actual problems. Seriously, he needs help and support. Maybe locking his twitter was a good idea.

While I don't want to jump to any conclusion, I tend to agree. It sucks people get legitimately sad or angry to the point of damaging their lives over something as petty as this name calling stuff. Hopefully Marcus does apologise, even just to be the bigger man or whatever. I don't see Phil just moving on, seems like something bigger is going on with him.

I'm seriously trying to imagine what it would be like to get these kinds of comments every day.

Typical people on the Internet not reading anything about the situation and jumping to conclusions.

That being said, it looks like some of you guys in this thread are doing it too.

Yeah he has, and yes he does get a lot of hate all the time.

It goes both ways, but by this point it is nothing more than a loop he has got himself caught in.

He receives hate, eventually breaks down (like today), gets a crapload of extra hate, restart.
Sad but true.

Phil Fish was being an asshole online long before most of this forum knew who he was.

He invited this himself by being a complete and utter douchebag. If you're going to start shit on the Internet you better be ready for the response.

Yup.

Having grand expectations of humanity, including the population of the internet, will lead to disappointment.

Which I'm sure is easy for internet anons to say

The same "anons" with twitter accounts that have their legal names tweeting at Phil Fish, or the Phil Fish "anon" with his legal name that told another person to "suck on his dick. choke on it"?

I don't understand the rush to defend a man so insecure with himself, such an egomaniac, that he quit development on a game PURELY out of spite.

Survival of the fittest, right?

What? Do you honestly think there is any value of replying to the idiots that wrote shit like that on the post on his website? Those people will never learn, and even if they do, another 100 will pop up saying the same shit.

It's a never ending battle. The best way to tackle such comments is by ignoring them.

Love this damn gif. Great usage.

Phil rants and raves, but also does have insightful thoughts, funny jokes, and completely innocent posts. Kamiya keeps it short and sweet in English and saves most of his grander thoughts and ideas for his native language so there's a bit of a disconnect. Most of the English speaking Twitterverse gets to see Kamiya as a string of emoticons, question marks, and telling people to eat shit.

Of course, amusement is subjective. I find Kamiya annoying but earnest. I find Fish annoying but insightful. I honestly don't understand why Kamiya is seen as particularly less of an asshole than Fish.

Kamiya hasn't made sweeping generalizations about an entire society's contributions to video games.

Kamiya hasn't sought out his critics and rubbed their faces in it any time he has accomplished something.

Kamiya hasn't proven that he is completely and utterly incapable of working with other human beings.

Kamiya hasn't gotten butthurt and cancelled his projects because people were mean to him on the internet.

The worst thing Kamiya has done is tell people to fuck off when they ask him a question he has answered a million times, or complain to him about games he has nothing to do with (Resident Evil 6, DmC).

Oh, and he used the word "gaijin" once. Horrors.

Sure. Especially when even supposedly professional journalists join in.

Probably not every day, just when he's acting like a spoiled assho... oh, right.

No really, his completely innocent and innocuous twitter posts get disgusting and horrible replies. Anything this guy says is met with someone trying to get a rise out of him.

Of course, when it's so easy to get a rise out of someone, that's expected.

I mean, everybody's gonna trip up once in awhile. You'll say something in an unguarded moment that gets way more attention than you imagined, or you'll trip over some invisible wire that leads you down a bad path for a few days or weeks. If what Fish and Blow claim is true, the nature of fame would be very, very different than it is. There'd be no hope. Everybody would be J.D. Salinger and Harper Lee.

Being able to catch yourself is whats important. Phil doubles down on the trolling and vitriol, leading to more venom coming his way. If he admitted he trolls too much or was dickish in the past, that would quench some of the hate.

Fact is, indie devs get hate mail/tweets all the time, but Phil Fish is the only one who attacks them back. He should learn to hit that Block button and move on

I think Fork Parker should run a Twitter PR outsource service... a lot of individuals appearing throughout this debate could be well served by following 'his' example. :p

That didn't work for Spoony. If you do that, you just get accused of trying to get sympathy. The hate doesn't end once it starts.

How did he expect people react to him, when he's a giant asshole 99% of the time? I'm not saying it's right that he gets so much shit thrown at him, but really, he had it coming. And what he's doing now is just pathetic.

What he's doing now is just reaping the whirlwind of assholishness he sown himself.

You misunderstood me, he has made twitter posts that are innocent and innocuous that have received hateful replies. I did not say that everything he posts is innocent.

With Fez 2 cancelled, maybe Phil Fish can use the free time to go around apologizing to people he's insulted over the internet, people he's never met. I hope those victims of his are doing okay these days.

Insulted who? Who exactly? Wait a second, so basically what your saying is your perfect, you have apologized for every wrong thing you said. You've never acted irrationally or said something on twitter that could have offended someone? Give me a break, he doesn't owe anyone an apology. If you aren't going to apologize, why should he? This is ridiculous

I wish all or most indie devs attacked back. Then what would people say? Death to indie games?

Yeah, the guy he told to commit suicide. Such a valuable exchange between the two of them.

There's no way in hell I'm justifying that. But I'm not going to go around justifying all this hate, either. It's completely over-the-top.

That didn't work for Spoony. If you do that, you just get accused of trying to get sympathy. The hate doesn't end once it starts.

Well, not many things are fair. Knowing how to get yourself out of a corner is a skill, whether it be in a fight or in a conversation. Nothing is absolute either.

if he didnt talk shit in the first place he wouldnt have these problems, he gained attention on here only recently cos of all the shit he posts about people or just general things he says.

he has brought all this on himself.

now if this was the activision guy doing this i would have sympathy (the thread from other day) that guy receives death threats and shit for patching broken things in a game

That'd suck if true. Fez was a great game and I'd love another one. He should just quit twitter and focus on making games. Quit the Internet since it brings out the worst from people. As evident by this already juvenile thread.

Couldn't agree more

He is SOOOOO right. People here act like they are perfect saints and angels that they have never said anything bad. Half of them say worst things than the developers themselves. Ridiculous.

That's irrelevant to what's going on. Fish is a known developer that has a reputation to maintain (or I thought so.) You can't go around dishing immature shit and expect to not get backlash.

I'm seriously trying to imagine what it would be like to get these kinds of comments every day.

In most cases, developers getting all sorts of hate tweets are because their vision, or changes to a game didn't match up with rabid fans. In Phil's case he brings all of the hate he gets on himself, Fez was great, it reviewed well, most people like/loved it, but he himself is a very negative person, and he lashes out, and people lash out back at him, he brings his hate on himself.

You misunderstood me, he has made twitter posts that are innocent and innocuous that have received hateful replies. I did not say that everything he posts is innocent.

So what? People dislike him because of his history. You say something stupid and/or inflammatory and it will stick with you. This is common fucking sense.

1. Internet users treat real people like abstractions.

2. Alleged abstractions turn out to be real people.

3. Internet users outraged.

It seems like Phil Fish should've seeked professional help a long time ago. Defending yourself is one thing, but the way the guy has attacked and reacted to people constantly clearly indicates a lack of control over his emotions. If he just made his games and came off as a reasonably modest and polite person I bet he wouldn't feel like an Internet pariah. But when you're constantly beating back on people and telling them to kill themselves while you brag on your own life...umm yeah, you may continue to get those interactions that you don't enjoy.

This Marcus Beer guy isn't a whole lot better. I get his argument but he came off as entirely unprofessional.

Maybe these guys are Indie devs because they can't work with anyone.

I'm seriously trying to imagine what it would be like to get these kinds of comments every day.

Have a look at this thread right now, look at everyone pretty much frothing at the mouth to attack the guy.

I feel like sometimes people exist in a bubble where however they feel, everyone else should feel that way too, people telling him to "grow the fuck up" don't get the amount of work he puts into his game, its clear he's passionate about his stuff. I get that some people don't understand having a passion for something, something you would die for, but seriously to attack the guy call him a "whiny bitch" disregard the work he's put into making a game something most devs probably think of as their own children, to practically shit on everything he works on? Really, who's being the immature one, who's whining now? And as I've said countless times before I do not at all think his comments made to Marcus Beer were acceptable. In fact they were pretty fucked up even if you understood the Futurama reference. He went out of line and has many times before, but looking at this thread and seeing how people begin to have a mob mentality and bully, YES BULLY, the guy explains why he acts the way he does. It's stressful being shit on everyday, not everyone can just grow thicker skin.

Hopefully his leave from twitter helps him, personally I think he should not have a twitter, Facebook, or whatever the guy cares too much about his work and obviously this stuff is stressing him out. He should get some help too, he's very reactionary to other people's comments, he really needs some self control, what just happened pretty much proves it. That's really all I have to say on this matter I guess, really sucks that he cancelled Fez 2.

Isn't this what Beer does for his job and is notorious for being blunt and slightly hostile towards gaming? If Phish can't handle it then I don't know what to say, grow up? Sure Beer says some dumb stuff but he always has and I don't expect better from him.

Also Blow will use any excuse to try sound prophetic and get attention. he's been doing that since the PS4 Feb. 20th event
