Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Beta Phase 3 Impression: Phase 4 August

This thread is cyclical, like many big threads on GAF.

At least once every 10 pages, there will be a debate about:
- PS3 vs. PC
- new server vs. Legacy server
- 1.x combat vs. ARR combat
- F2P vs. subscription
- will MRD or GLD be a better tank

I think that's it, unless we have another recurring topic I missed?
Wen is cycle 2 for taru vs lala?

No, I want chocobos to have a gambit system, I loved to play with it in FF XII.

Regarding FF XI, it was very hard, when I was subbing to find parties for main story content sicne most ppl already did it. Something like the first Guild Wars, in that you can use NPC to tackle missions. I mean restricted to main plot missions.
Isn't that what the Chocobo companions are for?

I was a huge fan of FFXI and although this game is very different in the end I'm hoping I can spend a good long time playing it. I love MMORPGs you see and I'm always looking for that one that will scratch that itch. Unfortunately lots of these kind of games these days are little more then single player games with the occasional co-op and of course the always entertaining end-game dungeons.

It's no bull shit when I say I really want this game to be good. I'm just having some problems with the fact that objectively this game is really lacking compared to other games that offer far less of their players (money wise). But of course those games lack everything that's important to me in an MMO... but then again the amount of catering to that particular group is also pretty apparent in this game.

To the above replies. OK, those are solid explanations going by what came out of FFXI expansions. Certainly a lot more then tacking on yet another end-game raid and yet another new set of gear to grind in said raids for.

Well, why not just wait a few years then and see if its worth the price? Anything to stop beating the damned drum of "this should be F2P!" That shit is toxic.

I don't know if you can take chocobos to main quests, but I guess they are here to help you in levequests and FATE.

There are already NPC companions helping you in your instances up to level 15. Then you play with people in dungeons and story quests from there. I don't see the point of making companions so you can turn the game into a single player affair. Especially with level syncing and such.

Pretty fucked up lol.

I guess taking a week break after phase 4 won't kill me. I would gladly hand them $5 bucks for the head start though.

Oh yeah, I was reading that the trial period will only be 10 days + however long phase 4 is. This legit?

I think Ebay will be overflowing with $5 headstart codes, honestly.

Yeah, almost sure chocobo companions won't be avaliable on story quests, but for solo content like leves or when you want to face a FATE and there isn't people around they can be very useful.

I guess because still didn't used mine on phase 3. lol

- lalafells vs. miqo'te, but it might just be you and rhad
I'd like to think this debate will have a 'mutually assured destruction' sort of resolution.

Then Yoshida can make way for some much needed #SquirrelSwag.
It was brought up in the last page. Riposte brought up a good point about the site formally running a podcast for 1.0, so it's possible they are bringing it back for ARR. I feel like the dev team has a pretty significant amount of control over the information/media that comes out, so I'd be surprised if a site could pull together a surprise scoop at this point.

Lalafells win. I can fit way more Lalafells in my lap than I can Mithra when I /sit.

btw, that never fails. Do /sit as a Galka/Roe and when you come back, you'll have at least 5-7 Lalafells/Taru in your lap

But if you are a mithra you will get lalafells stopping to ring your bell since they can reach your head.

Thanks, guess I'm jumping at any news at this point.

I'm pretty sure that you missed out if you didn't play Tera and experience the Squirrel Elins.

I don't think anyone with fleas can be a winner.

You're just jealous you can't get in on the daily grooming. It keeps us free of nasty fleas.

I would gladly take better storyline, plot, novel game, over speed any day. How cool/emotional would it be to get to level 30 and you have to chose one of your companions to permanently die....

Or have a major boss fight will 3-4 other parties. You wouldn't have to worry as much about having a primarily white mage or bard being able to do high level soloing if a player wants to quick level specialty jobs he could do it independently but still need other players to take on major boss battles/raids/dungeons.

Sounds like you want to play another game. I know for sure that I don't want to have to micromanage other characters, and just want full control over one.

wow nice cloth. which city do you have to choose for your GC to get this? Limsa?

Yes, that's level 50 Limsa GC armor mixed with Monk AF (boots on me, gloves on the taru).

You can see NPCs wearing this gear at each Grand Company HQ if you want to see what they look like on different characters. Uldah's is yellow and Gridania's is a sort of green-grey.

The hat is ultra dorky so I don't normally leave it showing but I did this time to lure in tarutarus.

Only other screenshot of it I have on hand of the gloves/boots/body (hat hidden)...maybe someone else has some from other GC to compare.

Reading all these comments gives me the impression that no one would want Uematsu to come back at least to write the main theme for any future expansions.

Just like I like Amano's artwork, I'd still want Uematsu to write at least the main theme, but as for a full soundtrack I really enjoy Soken and Mizuta so I'm ok with them.

Depends, Uematsu isn't very consistent these days, I like his good stuff, but not sure his style suits MMO's very well anyway.

You missed Lalafell being better than Miqo'te. (or better than all the races really)

Agreed, I was under the assumption this was what we were getting, really disappointed with the simple stance change stuff. (hoping its something they have planned in a later patch)

Maters on what scale you judge it on.

.

You know, that graphic was created by anime fans, that wanted to rationalize their interest in anime style anthropomorphic characters. Most furries consider catgirls, semi-furry.

Not that there's anything wrong with that! XD

Anyhow, yeah, Miqo'te forever. Lalafel are really only good for little children to squeeze.

I would be really mad at SE if I waste my time leveling up a NPC companion just to have him getting killed (if that means he would be unusable).

Alliance battles (2-3 parties) in FFXI were just a zergfest, but thats probably a fault of that game

Man I need to choose Limsa as my GC. what color was Ul'dah?

One of the more interesting experiments that Square ever conducted was killing Aeris off only a third of the way through the story of FFVII. From that, we can discover that killing off a female supporting character elevates her to iconic status, especially if said character was a potential love interest for the main character.

They never tried that again though.

*sniffle*

Shut up, I totally have something in my eye!

OMG SPOILERS!

Also that may work for a single player game, but not so much for an mmorpg. As in completely removing an aspect of your "character" or "account" for story reasons. There are plenty of npcs that die in mmorpgs for story reasons though.

Aeris
dies
!?

I wonder if Faction Leves are coming back. I didn't notice any Faction Points anywhere.

I wouldn't mind something similar to FFXI "zone-conquest" (or how the hell was it called, you know, that one thing were your nation had the region under control and you could activate the warp point at the outpost) in this XIV, it really instilled a sense of nationalism in you.

You are right.

Spoiler: In ARR he has come back from the dead thanks to Zalera to condemn the world of Hydaelyn.

Preordered this for ps3 at amazon, chose the collectors edition. I received an early access code. Will this let me download a digital copy of the game before the physical copy arrives?

to be fair we saw that way earlier than FFVII, for example in the Phantasy Star series.

Anyways, like Slacker said I dont think this would work on a MMO, where the emphasis is not on its story but in building your character.

It doesn't work until someone figures out how to do it, then it's obvious to everyone why it works. Too be fair, if any studio was likely to try, and likely to be successful, trying something like this in an MMO, it's Square. I think the trick is to get you invested emotionally, without relying on an MMO-level investment of time. Perhaps you get to make decisions about how they grow, but aren't required to grind any extra for them.

If we are talking about a companion where it only shows in the story, like in FFXIV 1.0 then yea. but if we are talking about an NPC companion where you can summon him for helping you in whatever you want, then I dont thik a lot of people would agree on killing it. A companion like that is a tool for helping you, like a chocobo for example (no one would like to be banned of using chocobos or airship).

Also we have to take into account that theres a lot of MMO players who dont care about the story. Even in FFXI, wich was a more story driven MMO compared to others, there was a lot of people who didnt care about its story misions. Introducing a tool to help you survive or get faster exp and taking it out while proceding into the story would make people to just not do the story misions.

Or maybe they could ingore the story and let you summon your NPC even if its being killed in the story but lol immersion. I would be ok with it, but it would be a pointless death.

Hey i wanted to ask a question about the starting cities. I would like to make limsa my city and the use the grand company there but i want to use a lancer. What i am wondering is if i start in gridania will it affect the story later on? I mean will it have to do with the gridania characters?
