Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

Initially I hated this thread, because it mainly comes down to "say shit carelessly to the point that would look like trolling in other threads". I think it promotes bad behavior. However now I realize this is pretty handy to get a good grasp who are the posters that are best ignored (or rather, who should I not give benefit of the doubt to). If only you folk would stop constantly changing your avatars (names, god) so I can remember you by sight.

seems childish to ignore someone for not having the same opinion as you. or if it's because they expressed it in a bad way, i think a thread whose premise is to be controversial should allow for opinions to be dressed up a little.

The Last of Us was a great game, but broke precisely zero new ground. The people claiming it as some sort of grand experience are weird to me, like people who say Drake is their favorite rapper. Like, opinions are cool, but when you say shit like that I wonder how much experience with the medium you actually have.

A junior who gets it. This thread was meant to be funny and controversial. Why come in here and post in the same old boring manner.

you should stick to youtube longplays

I assume you're trying to 'troll' and all that nonsense, but it is interesting [upon reflection] the number of titles this generation I'd probably have enjoyed more had I watched them instead of played them, so lacking is the gameplay depth / atmosphere and so few the interesting or memorable moments that rarely come from gameplay. Still, ultimately games are best enjoyed played and there're a lot of titles I've enjoyed [particularly independent games] that focus less on filler content / combat and more on interesting implementations of puzzles, narrative and so on.

I never been a huge fan of Rare. people always praise their stellar N64 games and yet forget their not so good SNES and NES games (I am not saying that they didn't make good SNEs and NES games but the bad ones outweigh the good ones.) . You can name me 5 good Rare games and I can name you 20 bad ones.

I do find it funny that a lot of people criticized Double Helix (devs of new Killer Instinct) for making a bunch of licensed games when that was pretty much most of Rare's output up till DKC

The XBox One will be much more competitive than many on here think it will be, and next gen will probably look a lot like this gen sales wise when all is said and done (I'm not counting Nintendo)

The Wii U is dead as a doornail. Mario Kart and Smash Bros will brings signs of life, but it will be a bigger failure than the gamecube.

Both the XBox One and PS4 are ugly as hell

Both the Uncharted and Gears of War series are insanely overrated and in need of sitting on the shelf for a while.

The Last Guardian will disappoint many if it ever comes out

Call of Duty is simply more fun to play than Battlefield

Diablo III is the most disappointing game I have ever played,

Fire Emblem Awakening is a better game than The Last Of Us and should be game of the year at this point. (TLoU is still a great game)

Generation II was the only weak/bad generation in the Pokémon series. Johto had a lot of boring designed Pokémon, no new evil team, poor Pokémon distribution (seriously, you see more monsters from Kanto than the Johto ones in GSC/HGSC). Not to mention the forgettable Gym Leaders and Elite Four members. The music and the rival (Silver) were nice, though. Silver was vastly superior to Blue. Generation I, III and V were the best ones and IV wasn't bad either.

I don't think any of these are controversial and I think you actually have made some accurate predictions.

Nintendo hasn't made a great game since the NES.

I think I've mentioned these before in this thread, but this includes such inferior titles as Super Metroid, Zelda 3, Mario 64, The entire Smash Bros franchise, OOT, the Metroid Prime Trilogy. These games were good, but ultimately derivative and not as exciting as the earlier entries. This also extends to handheld games including Pokemon and the newest Animal Crossing, both of which I enjoy to some degree, but not as much as other games.

The only thing that makes me think that this is false is Majora's Mask and Mario Galaxy, and possibly the first F-Zero and Mario Kart games.

That's funny, because I thought Mario Galaxy was one of the most sterile and boring games I've ever played, devoid of any charm or even feeling like it was made by humans. I also think that some of those other games you mentioned aren't derivative at all. Hm.

That's why it's controversial. Oh, and I only mean derivative from the previous entries that I liked more. For example Zelda 3 is just a crappier version of Zelda 1. Super Metroid is just a prettier Metroid.

Pikmin 3 (I hate 1&2)
Seriously blew my mind

In future Zelda games, Link needs to speak.

I disagree. Link, Samus, Amaterasu and similar characters should NEVER speak. If Nintendo ever make a Zelda game with a voiced Link, it will be the first Zelda game I will never play.

Voiced main characters are the reason I avoid most RPG games (yes, I know Zelda isn't a RPG). How I am supposed to enjoy a role playing game, if the character I am playing as is a douche or say things I'd never say? A big example is the Final Fantasy series. I dislike most main characters of the series, besides Terra and maybe Cecil. The 'Tales of' series is probably the biggest offender. Fortunately there are still some good (RPG or not) franchises with silent protagonists, like Shin Megami Tensei and, well, Zelda series.

Oh, speaking of Zelda, I loved Skyward Sword. Don't get all the hate towards the game.

All Kingdom Hearts games are (essentially) the same mechanically: Very fun series with a fun story but the gameplay isn't anything spectacular. Whenever SE tries to switch it up, as seen with DDD, it's met with backlash.

Nintendo is one of the only companies still developing good "games" these days: Without listing I'll just say a good amount of AAA games being released today are pretty much tech demos strung together by some flimsy story.

Well, if DDD is different, Chain of Memories is definitely different, that's at least 2 of 6 games which are different, and I'm sure there is an argument that could be had for 365/2 being different.

How much do you expect to change from game to game?

What's wrong with this?? TLOU is one of the best games I've ever played. If someone tells me that I'm not even going to argue it. If someone told me Resident Evil 6 is one of the best games they've ever played, then I'd kind of want to fight them. I think I'm well qualified to say that.

"I have bad taste": The Thread.

I need to stop coming in here because there are so....many....bad.....opin....ions.

Seriously.... I lost it last night and called it a day after i read someone's essay about how TLOU is bad and Zelda OOT is terrible or w/e. I just can't.

Let's put it this way. The same way people feel about NSMB is the way I feel about this series. I just can't tell the difference for the most part.

On that note I guess I can add that I actually enjoyed Resident Evil 6. Other than the story which always sucks I didn't have much of a issue with the game.

The Wii U is not dead. Nintendo will rise to make a tidy profit, nowhere near the Wii, but above Gamecube numbers. Whereas the Wii was frontloaded with lots of casuals, the Wii U will be a slow burn that steadily grows, especially once they actually begin marketing it and the games they're making.

I hate fps games. I haven't played many, but I played the Half-Life games, which are supposedly the cream of the crop, and found them mediocre.

MGS2 is a masterpiece and the best Metal Gear.

I don't hate any Final Fantasy.

Yep. There is a difference between not seeing what the big deal is, or that it didn't resonate with you, but saying something is bad when it isn't is just absurd and reads like they want attention.

For example, I can't STAND Halo, but I don't think it's a bad game. It's just not something I like....at all. BUT, I could play Rocket Race, Oddball and Blue Balls all damn day.

Here's another one. Infinite handled violence so much than The Last of Us, in terms of brutality. I still wince when enemies scream in utter pain every time you light them on fire.

On the contrary, it is children who are more susceptible to bad ideas. Obtaining taste for ideas and rejecting bad ones, that's how someone gets to be smart.

But don't get the wrong idea, I'm not just writing off people who disagree with me. It is more along the lines of being able to figure out who has limited potential to say valuable things by looking at how far they err (sometimes only within a smaller contexts). Not just through simple statements, but observing how they arrive there. This may not only mean finding good games bad or vice versa, but also how resentful they are as human beings, how scruby their attitude about difficulty is, how much appearances/reputation of developers matters to them, lack of introspection, etc. My mind could be changed at a later time, but in the meanwhile if they say something like "X is a really Y!", it means nothing to me.

RE: people picking goty based on story. It is unfortunate that people still think of videogames in terms of "story" and not "atmosphere". I wonder how many years it will take to get there.

For me, it's unfortunate that people still think of movies in terms of "story" and not "atmosphere".

What do you guys mean still think in terms of story; that is relatively new in the grand scheme of games. Before this gen all stories (yes even the jrpg ones you loved) were sappy horsecack.
