Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I think people are fondly remembering Half-Life (1&2) as being better than it really was. I hear people saying that it's still one of the greatest games EVER! I thought is was a good shooter with a pretty standard "SyFy" storyline. I respect what it for what it did during it's time, but I don't think it's as "great" as people remember it.

Open world games suck.

I'll agree that it was really cool to play one for the first time back when GTA3 came out, and enjoy the novelty of driving around a city and pissing around. But really, after over a decade of them, the novelty has worn off. An 'open world' is just a bunch of empty filler content developers make you traverse for 10 minutes or whatever before you can get to a mission, and play the actual game. I just want to select 'level 3' from the menu and get right to the good stuff.
I absolutely agree with this. "Open world" as a concept wore out its novelty a long time ago, and it's pretty apparent now that it's just a lazy fallback for games' lacking proper direction and level design.

Sony firstparty is ridiculously overrated. Most of their games looks great, but have uninteresting gameplay. They are well crafted with mostly good stories, great graphics, nice atmosphere and good music, but the gameplay is just so boring and repetitive. None of their games are bad imo, just uninteresting, and they are waaaay behind both MS and especially Nintendo when it comes to their firstparty games. In general. The good reception comes from nostalgia for the PS1/PS2 days when Sony actually had a ton of great but mostly thirdparty exclusives.

Gamers themselves have a massive disconnect with how the industry actually works. We're self-entitled and overreact to the smallest things with a passion. It's a strength but also a weakness.

I think the Wii U will do alright, in time. It will probably be another Gamecube, but do a little bit better, especially once the price goes down. It will have great first party games and a few notable third party titles. It won't "win" the console war and won't be a power house by any means. But it won't be a failure and won't be Nintendo's last console. In fact, most of my pre-orders for the next few months are mostly Wii U exclusives.

You have serious mental issues if you find Minecraft the least bit fun or interesting.

As a life long console gamer, I can whole heartedly say that every serious gamer should have a gaming PC. PC gaming is simply amazing. So many options, so many choices, so much customization and just so much potential. You can play games, virtually, however you want, with better performance (thus, more precise input) and thanks to much higher IQ, you can appreciate the game's visuals the way the developers intended. Plus, you're on a PC, which can do basically everything else you'd want to do as well.

Japanese games are almost entirely irrelevant now. Nintendo is the only company worth giving a damn about. I guess you can throw in Atlus, Platinum, GHM, From, Vanillaware and a few small guys here and there. Nintendo is really the only one who is consistently good. Capcom was doing fine in the beginning of this generation until they went full retard. They decided to nickle and dime people to death and out sourced their remaining good IPs to Western studios that were known for making shitty games. To hell with the same old anime tropes and moe bullshit. Japan needs to change. They're drowning in their own, stagnant, tired ways.

People only like Vice City more than San Andreas because anything '80s is more nostoalgic and much weirder than anything in the '90s. Plus, it basically rips off Scarface. Other than, it's a good game, especially for the amount of time it took to make. San Andreas kills it in every single category though. There is no comparison. San Andreas trumps Vice City top to bottom.

I hate front running and band wagons. Just be honest. Like Kevin Hart's uncle said, "SAY IT WITH YO CHEST!" For instance: I appreciate that people are now liking Wind Waker and not merely judging it because it's cel chaded. I like that more and more people are finally playing Majora's Mask. But don't like it simply because you feel like it needs love or because it's now cool to like it. For your own opinion. .....And this is kind of off point, but you know what. Seriously, fuck the gaming press and the media. Every single outlet. Fuck them all. Form your own opinion folks. Do your research. Do your homework. Think for yourself. Don't let others tell you what you should like. Most of these people don't know what they're talking about. A lot of the shit you read is probably money hatted in some way shape or form or just click bait. It's a waste of your time. Read user impressions (at least the ones worth reading). Ask friends. Or just extract whatever you can from videos or screenshots. It just amazes that there are individuals who are paid to actually write their terrible opinions. Even worse how people revere and trust them too. I particularly don't like people like Geoff Keighley at all. Like at all. Period. He's a fucking snake oil salesman. A glorified promoter. He gets paid to hype one game after another. He doesn't give a shit. I like to think I'm smart enough and have played games long enough to know my own tastes and have a general sense as to what to buy and what to avoid.

Twitter shouldn't be a viable source of news. It's utter trash. It's a neat tool for quick updates and advertising. Other than that, I hate how it's used. Also, I don't like how some devs use Twitter to stay relevant. I despise internet attention whores who just HAVE to be in the lime light....Cliff, I love you man, but seriously....what is wrong with you!?!??! You've gone into the deep end....Anyway, how about ya'll just shut the fuck up, make your game and let it speak for itself. Express yourself through your craft and be proud of it. Forget the haters and the trolls. That, and you're really not doing yourself any service by spewing any kind of anti consumer bullshit out in public, either. None of that will end well. Think before you speak and recognize who you're speaking to.

Feminist game discussions, including the totally milquetoast marking down of sexist games in scores, are better than the status quo.

But bitching for the sake of bitching is incredibly obnoxious. People need to sit the fuck down and stop being so uptight and stop creating faux outrage over nothing.

games i realize don't suck but i can't, for whatever reason, summon up any kind of giving a shit about playing them. uncharted series, batman arkham series, every metroid game. again i don't think these are bad, but for reason reason i just never wanted to play a single game from any of these. i have arkham city. got it for free for purchasing a gtx580. still haven't touched it, and i don't think i ever will. i wish i could donate the game but i already registered it and everything.

final fantasy x is a bad entry in the series, and i'm legit flabbergasted when i see someone claim it best final fantasy or best game ever. cast sucks, dialogue wasn't that hot, voice acting was pretty bad, and it had some of the most annoying sidequests/ultimate weapon quests i've played in my entire life. flabber. gasted.

up until recently, i hated isometric/top down views. i'm starting to get over it, but i'm still kind of "awww damn" when i see a game has that view with no options to change it or zoom. i dunno it's kinda hard to care about stuff when it's all so small.

i can't play most of those adventure type games where you don't "control" a character, or where the gameplay is the dialogue, or point and clicks, etc. i have to control the character. i have to be able to do things with them.

handheld gaming is pointless unless you're a passenger on some really long drive out of town/state, or if you have some long gap in class or something like that. only reason handheld gaming ever piqued my interest is there are exclusives for them. not because of mobile gaming itself.

Enough has been said already, but Bioshock Infinite is one of the worst games I've played this gen. Gorgeous with some strong ideas, but awful execution in the gameplay and story department(yes I was not enthused or intrigued by the ending). It's the new MGS4...the weaknesses just outright decimate any strengths, and yet fans just look the other way. Hoping for better when I play Last of Us.

I HATE that GotY talk has been saddled with some awkward distinction of what game plot/story resonated most with players.

3DS strangely has been a beast of a machine this year, delivering some of the highest quality gaming experiences 2013 can offer. They will be overlooked at the end of the year.

This is so completely wrong.

I know plenty of people who hasn't played a Sony console until this gen and loved their games.

I see that Nintendo has better first party games, but MS? lol

Halo, Gears, Forza?

If the industry were embrace indies more and bring back third party exclusives, everyone would be REALLY happy.

One more...

Despite popular belief, I think video games can be therapeutic. Gamers aren't socially inept people who live in basements. Gaming is an incredible social hobby. People from all around the world, from all walks of life, play games. I can't tell who how many friends, bonds and relationships I've formed because of gaming. There is nothing like our hobby and nothing like our community. It truly is something special. I believe (besides full on virtual reality) that gaming is the ultimate form of entertainment. And yes, video games ARE art.

YES. Let's be friends. Rarely have I felt so validated by something a fellow gamer wrote. I'm so tired of sandboxes. Give me some interesting meaningful choices, limit me to two or three options but make them MEAN something in a broader narrative. If I just want freedom to run around shooting things or building stuff without getting bogged down by minor little things like *the game itself*, I don't need a whole new game every few months to do it in. I wish more of the industry's resources were put into crafting compelling STORY with THREE-DIMENSIONAL CHARACTERS who don't bizarrely ignore everything I do, rather than creating more sandboxes.

The discussions on this board about sexism and female representation in video games are among the worst trash I have ever read on the internet.

Holy shit, you need to visit more websites.

People calling anything "the worst trash on the internet" are sheltered and haven't actually seen the worst trash on the internet.

Half-Life series. The story was awesome, but gameplay is meh in my opinion. The only interesting feature is the gravity gun.
New controversial opinion: "We Don't Go to Ravenholm" is the best level in any FPS ever, unless we're counting Metroid Prime series, in which case the best level is Sanctuary Fortress.

I visited 4 chan for years. I saw the depths of the Internet hell and the discussions I mentioned are below it.

Game reviewer opinions aren't more correct than any others.

The value of a game review is its clarity, and its charm. Anybody can rate a game on a numeric scale just as well as the most seasoned reviewer, and be just as correct.

Yeah open world games have certainly become a bulletpoint rather than a main feature. Can't name many games lately that are Vice Cities or Capital Wastelands. It's a real shame.

1.The Halo franchise (with the exception of the first Halo), BioShock franchise, and Portal franchise are the most overrated--borderline boring games ever created in the last two console generations. I'd rather play snake on my 10 year old ti-83 calculator.

2. I've said this once before in the thread and I'll say it again: JRPGs suck ass. Only video game hipsters love playing games where the character is an adult male who looks like a teenage girl... dressed in s&m leather sailor suits. Oh and no one cares about riding around on mutant chicken-horses.

3. Handheld gaming is fucking stupid. Vita (worst name ever), 3ds, iOS, android gaming--all of it is for simpletons with short attention spans.

The first final fantasy should have actually been THE final fantasy.

How can you have 37 different final fantasies?
The name of all subsequent games should've been,

"Almost the final fantasy" or "I think this is the final fantasy"

I'm not a fan of death in video-games and play everything on easy [or whatever the lowest difficulty setting is named] just so I don't have to replay sections of content to continue to enjoy the game. I enjoyed Prince of Persia '2008' [to the point it's one of my more revered titles this generation] and wish more AAA games implemented a similar failure system.

I didn't know we can be assholes and throw insults at people for enjoying things.

I never been a huge fan of Rare. people always praise their stellar N64 games and yet forget their not so good SNES and NES games (I am not saying that they didn't make good SNEs and NES games but the bad ones outweigh the good ones.) . You can name me 5 good Rare games and I can name you 20 bad ones.

Initially I hated this thread, because it mainly comes down to "say shit carelessly to the point that would look like trolling in other threads". I think it promotes bad behavior. However now I realize this is pretty handy to get a good grasp who are the posters that are best ignored (or rather, who should I not give benefit of the doubt to). If only you folk would stop constantly changing your avatars (names, god) so I can remember you by sight.

There's "controversial" opinions and then there's factually wrong opinions. I think you have a very misinformed view of what constitutes handheld gaming.

This is meant to be a joke. Seriously if you read through half of this thread you would have gotten that.

Edit: I must have touched on a sore subject, video game hipster.

Ah, the classic "I WAS JOKING GUYS" and then you proceed to call me a hipster anyways. LOL

And no, you didn't touched a sore subject because I'm not huge into JRPGs :V

Again its meant to be joke. The internet doesn't have to be so serious.

Edit: I can't believe no one thought my mutant chicken-horse line was funny. You guys are all jerks.

We all have our opinions and that's fine, but

2. there's a lot of great and diverse jrpgs, I personally don't like FF and the ones made by Idea Factory so I get where you're coming from. Check out SMT for a great series.

3. 3DS and some Vita gaming is amazing, I've played some of the AAA titles of the year and still my top 3 are still from handheld gaming. (Fire Emblem: Awakening, SMT4, EO4)

I think you're mostly kidding so it's okay.

If it's a joke why didn't I laugh?

Controversial time: Most Snes era and Nes era games suck. I wasn't alive when these consoles were in their prime but I can see how they might have impressed back in the day. Some of them are tough, which isn't what makes them bad, I think it's rather the controls. I just don't have patience for most games.
