$200 on contract is NOT mid-range. Why should I get the Moto X when phones that came out last year has better specs and cheaper today?

So disappointing. Why the hell would anyone get this? I thought the whole point was low off contract price for mid level specs.

Pissed about ATT customization exclusivity and the off-contract prices. Otherwise this is a solid phone.

I really see no point to this phone. Voice and gesture are interesting things that sway between similar phones but who the hell cares about the extras if the phone is expensive and low-spec'd? The phone to beat is the iPhone and it already has an unholy amount of shells and accessories that will get the job done.

Made in America must really add to the cost.

HAHAHAHA

THIS is their revolutionary phone? Something that costs the same as a razr maxx or galaxy s4? And verizon doesn't even get colors?

Go take a hike MotoGoogle, S4 it is for me then.

How absolutely disappointing.

Well, this sucks. The Moto X is exclusive to Rogers in Canada (stupid!) and is $189 on a two year contract. I'm on Telus, which has the HTC One for $129 on a two year, which doesn't it have better specs than the X?

Lame, I was hoping for $300 off contract.

These guys must be kidding themselves if they thought a mid range phone with a few parlor tricks is what would get them out of the red.

They had a chance to do something big and different and that's not what we got today.

We can hold out hope for a reasonably priced Google Play edition, but that's not going to get the attention of the mainstream or iPhone crowd.

Moto blew it.

Holy shit what a turn this announcement took

Well...good luck Moto?

The back cover is not removable, right? Why not? Shouldn't it be good for back covers to be removable since the entire customizability this phone has? I could see Motorola racking up a lot of sales from back covers alone.

You can get TWO Galaxy S4s on Sprint for cheaper.

But buying this gets you a direct line with the NSA!

Oh, and you get to enjoy Motorola's wonderful reputation of their phones not lasting a year before shitting out.

Can't believe Google let this happen.

This is gonna fail so hard. No one wants a shittier screen for same price, regardless of so called battery life. I'd go with an S4 or HTCone over this any day.

It's funny that the surprises from this event were all bad.

God. That yellow and white combo looks so good too.

When's the HTC one supposed to come sour for Verizon

Verge guy seems to suggest that the AT&T customization is a timed exclusive

Super fail on price though unless the google play version is like 300 dollars

Motorola hardware has been pretty shitty for me, but I was totally ready to overlook that if this was a decent price off contract. $199 and two years? Fuck it I will wait for the next iPhone.

If it makes you feel better, Verizon gets a special Blue HTC One

The customization of the back is the main feature for this phone, not the specs.

If the battery and camera claims are true, that plus the customization options make up for the lower specs IMO. But everyone's different.

You are paying more for a lesser speced phone. Why? Amazon has the One for 80 bones on contract and comes with 32 gigs of space.

Your delusional if you think this is good.

This is the phone equivalent of Nintendo announcing that Retro Studios is working on fucking Donkey Kong while announcing a BRAND NEW 3D MARIO GAME FOR WII U that turns out to be another Mario 3D Land but for the Wii U.

Motorola will have a version of the Moto X on Google Play network unlocked as well, at some future date, and a developer edition on Motorola as well for what I would suspect is a bootloader unlock (Motorola has sold developer editions of their phones before this way).

anandtech

I don't get why this is so much more expensive than the Nexus 4. I don't get why this isn't a Nexus experience phone. I don't get the spec choice. I don't understand why their CORE customisation feature is exclusive to a carrier that demands an AT&T logo permanently in your goddamn notification bar.

This just makes no sense.

Holy shit, lol. $600 for THAT? Why would anybody pick this phone up when there are so many better choices.

I think this is probably the biggest turnaround of hype and disappointment that I have seen in a LONG time.
