NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

No continues victory! That actually wasnt that hard.

Now lets see which game to tackle next...kinda leaning toward something obscure like Kabuki Quantum Fighter or Power Blade. Of course I still need to finish Ninja Gaiden 1 after getting into it awhile ago, or Castlevania III + Adventure Island.

Much better than most people seem to think.

I've always wanted to check it out, and i've never really seen a bad 8-16 bit era Capcom game. I'll check some videos.

No continues so far...I think I might just blast through! Also that quarterback cyborg wasnt as hard as I thought... Womp was right, and I thought my jump wouldnt clear the guy, but you always just make it over its head.
I did the same thing last week; but I admit I farmed for a couple 1ups on the respawning soldiers. Also got lucky at the heart boss when only one of the ceiling spiders dropped down. Such a great game. I wish they hadn't made Super C doubly challenging.

On a sorta related subject...how is Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight (lol)?
It's Capcom "hard." Also, there's a lot of times later in the game when you wish you could shoot on a diagonal, but instead have to deal with maneuvering enemies into your direct line of sight while THEY attack you diagonally.

Post Screen shots of game play! I did not know they made a 2nd game. Is the Music and Game play on the same level as the original?
The game also released in the US as well. It's very easy to find gameplay videos on YouTube.

I haven't had a chance to play my copy yet. Only the copy of D2 on gameboy that I've had for awhile now, which is similar to the D1 NES game. I think the NES D2 is supposed to be similar/same as the Gameboy one.

Got a few new things over the last week:

Ninja Gaiden Trilogy completed. Didn't realize I didn't own Monster Party, so had to pick that up real quick after that thread about it popped up. I've never seen such a good condition cart before, it looks absolutely brand new.

There was a thread about it? lol had no idea, I just watched a video after seeing something about it in a magazine, and now waiting for a copy to arrive myself.

Those strange NES action titles are always must plays.

Nice pickups. The latest Retronauts talks about the Ninja Gaiden series, so I'm thinking about getting 1 and 3 since I own 2.

I was happy to find part three for an okay price ($30). It had some marker writing on it, but that was easy enough to get off with some goo gone.

Need to get some more universal cases. I don't like having the first two in cases, but not the third.

So close to beautiful.

Yeah, someone was trying to relate the game to Suda51. It was pretty dumb. But, it made me realize I didn't own this game any more, so something good came out of it. Was one of my favorites when I was a kid. So fucking weird.

EDIT: To be clear, the thread title was changed by a mod. The original title called Monster Party Suda51's first game.

Roughly 360 carts, manuals, and boxes, plus several boxed systems, and Nintendo Powers? That works out to probably less than $2 per gaming item for a super cheap $50 shipping cost. Hell, the gun nac manual alone is worth more than the shipping cost. I would have bid, but no shipping to Canada.

hunting NES carts on my list at the moment, man River City Ransom for < $20 is tricky, any ideas?

If you want to trade something I've got rcr that I don't ever play anymore. It's in decent shape, label is un sticking a bit from the top, but other than that it looks good. Actually after I pulled it out i must be remembering it with something else because the label is fine. It just has that small nick on it, but other than that nothing I can see.

I played Mighty Final Fight literally all evening last night. Cody and Guy are so much better than Haggar; it's not even right. They give him an initial Exp boost, his attacks do double or triple damage, and still quicker enemies rope-a-dope him. Guy is definitely the most fun to play as, though Cody is well-rounded for breezing through the game on one credit.

I wish I could track down the people at Capcom that developed the game and ask them some burning questions, like:

1. Why no 2P mode?
2. The game hits sprite limit pretty quick; was it originally coded in 1989 or 1990 and shelved for a while?
3. Some of the music is VERY similar to River City Ransom. Are the similarities intentional?
4. Are there any other secret power ups like the "meat" sign in stage 5? (If you punch it, it fills your health)

Hey NeoGafers,

I have had a game stuck in my head that I cant remeber the name of. Surely one of you will know it! I am fairly certain it is a NES game.

It was a 1/2 player game where you built walls in a base in squares where you could place cannons. You would then start a Cannon battle phase followed by a repair phase. A simple game but crazy fun against someone of similar skill.

Anyone know which game i'm talking about?

man i wish a good NES flashcart wasn't expensive, i think i'd be down for Zelda: Outlands

I'm getting an EverDrive N8 for Famicom as soon as I come into some money. Would be nice to have my 150 NES/Fami games at my fingertips.

^right?

had some friends over last night, right when Chip & Dale: Rescue Rangers came in the mail, so of course we all went right in on that...game really does hold up, but the upscaled composite leaves such washed out colors, im about ready to settle for the Retron 5 if it pans out.

spent part of my morning here reminding myself how awesome metal polish is at getting these carts to work, everyone of em i cleaned (a few needed opening...no hundreds inside sadly) worked like a charm, except the one i really wanted to play: Rolling Thunder.

most times im getting the damn lockout/flashing screen. is this common for Tengen carts? the screws dont even look to use the same bit as the others, it's frustrating.

also: when opening Dr Mario, i noticed the cart said 1985...i'm assuming since nintendo had such control over production they just used older ones for newer games sometimes? it was weird at a glance.

With Tengen carts, I think it's sometimes an alignment issue. Like their contacts aren't quite spaced properly. For instance, on the NES in my living room, I have to insert licensed carts flush left, but Tengen work dead center. Wisdom Tree/Color Dreams are a flat out crapshoot.

Also, with the cart date stamp, I'm guessing Nintendo didn't change the molds after going to three screws. The back labels were only updated a few times as it were.

^makes sense.

and oh yeah, this thing is only fitting in dead-center, could that be why? nothing trips the lockout chip like this one does, i cant find a way around it. kinda rethinking my favoring this one over the top loader for nostalgia's sake now.

That's why I cut pin 4 on the lockout chip in my toasters (shouldn't we call them VCRs?).

The last of my recent batch of Famicom purchases have come. Now I'm going to hold off for a while unless I can find someone who will trade their copy of Gimmick! for a bunch of stuff from my collection. I'm not holding my breath.

In a couple months when I splurge again it'll be an FDS or the full Rockman set.

goddamn @ that haul, nice one Lambtron! if you dont mind man how much did it set you back?

hate to be that guy but man their carts look just shy of bootlegg-y to me, haha. still, cover art's great.

Well it was spread across a few purchases. Lickle was $70 (less eBay bucks), Hebereke around $40. I think I paid ~$50 total for Duck Tales 2, Mother, and Chack'n Pop. It was ~$110 total for Raf World, Contra, Super Contra, and Gun Nac because the Buy 3 Get 1 free deal at JapanGameStock is awesome. Like I said, it's time to hold off for a bit haha.

The carts do look sketchy but I really, really love them. This is why I paid as much as I did for Raf World instead of just getting Journey To Silius. Also, gotta put that AV Famicom to use.

ah, so like SFC, fami carts are still better price than some domestics...good to know!

man i cannot get over these washed-out colors. overscan's one thing, but this makes me wanna emulate and that sucks..anyway.

been on an NES binge lately, netted some greats from NintendoAge, Wrath of the Black Manta is a gem of a shinobi-clone so far, but Elevator Action plays like that just-post-Atari period..really was hoping for something better, Returns is so good for a Rolling Thunder fan.

just swung Journey to Silius & DK Classis for like $18 shipped or so, feels good. i'm down to sniping b-tier stuff like Godzilla, Kung-Fu Heroes, Boy & His Blob, Rygar etc, looks like Snake's Revenge (don't judge!) and Super C left for the moment. Mega Man 1 is currently out of reach (3's not as bad), and stuff like Paperboy is barely worth the cost of shipping on some auctions. name some gems! i just discovered Clash at Demonhead last night, and River City Ransom should be here soon, so those bases are covered.

EDIT: Is Chack'n related to Bubble Bobble?
It apparently plays similar but worse, but it sounds pretty charming and it was like $3 so I went for it. I haven't had a chance to play it, or really any of these yet because of school which is mercifully over tomorrow.

Yeah it's pretty hit or miss. Some of the Fami stuff is crazy spendy, but on the whole a lot of the really expensive NES stuff (Samson, Panic Restaurant, etc.) is much cheaper on the Fami.

IrishNinja--If you like Donkey Kong, you should look into getting a reproduction cart of Donkey Kong Pie Factory. It's Donkey Kong with the pie factory and end-level animations put back in. I grabbed a copy from RetroZone when they had it in stock and it's been a fun diversion when Battle Kid 2 is making me want to punch puppies.

aw man, that does sound cool...prolly cheaper than that digital copy of Paper Mario: Sticker Star Story i bought on 3DS just to get the Donkey Kong with that level on 3DS back in like january, too...

its funny, i must have like 4 or 5 copies of DK on various physical/digital systems and im terrible at all of them, haha

I too have a soft spot for that cranky ape and the plumber with the squeaky shoes.

Maybe I will play that tonight, since last night I tortured myself with Fester's Quest. Oh God that game sucks. It's like someone coded a basic top-down run and gun and slapped a movie tie-in onto it.

Run out of health? Start at the very beginning with all your items.
I managed to find an extra health item, letting me take a total of three hits.
Not fun when potions are limited and hot dog stands are only above-ground.
... and you can't shoot diagonally.
... and half the guns fire in wide arcs that miss enemies.

Game makes Ninja Gaiden seem easy.

Screw you, Uncle Fester.

Today I hit 90 boxed games. Bigger
First time I got them all together in one place.

Picked up Chip n dale, Little Nemo, Popeye, Darkman, Mousecapades and Bugs Bunny today for about $60.

^damn that's pretty, they're in great shape too!

Universal PPU project blog has been seeing updates this last month, i'm not too knowledgeable on the tech bits but it looks like progress is being made!

one comment/reply:

Do you have a pre-order list yet, or are you waiting for preliminary tests once you get the board?

After preliminary testing

reassuring, since again i'm desperate for something to help the washed-out colors i'm seeing. I'm really hoping that this works out for a good price, then i could send my unit to my modder to have it installed & the lockout chip removed (he offered to put a switch in for the few titles requiring it, debating that) but i'd also like to see the connection board either thoroughly cleaned or replaced; system was new out of the box a few years back but i still get too many blue screens.

speaking of: those of you who've cut said lockout chip & cleaned or replaced your boards, do any of you get a system which loads your carts like 100% of the time? does it stay this way or go to crap again over time? really trying to decide if it's worth holding onto the old VCR model or just giving in for the top loader.

Cut the lockout pin 4 and did the boil method on connectors in 2 toasters. Results were AMAZING with one unit and pretty darn good with the other. The "amazing" one is now 100% if I insert carts flush left (except Tengen and Color Dreams). The pretty good one is more like 80%, but it was barely working previously, so I consider it a huge improvement. It's been about 6 months, so only time will tell.

I will say, cutting the lockout pin was very helpful because it eliminates all those borderline instances where a little flicker or random bump would cause a reset.

I'd prefer a modded top loader, but for now I'm set. And my hopes are high for the Retron 5 hopefully solving the issue.

Never cut the lockout chip, just replaced the pin connector. I always clean my new games. But, after that my system pretty much loads first try 100% of the time. If it doesn't, I know it's because the game needs cleaned better. It has been at least five years since I replaced the connector, still going strong.

Had a response to my CL ad, ended up getting MM4 and 5 for $10 a pop. Didn't have any intention of completing the set, but when you end up only missing 6, you kind of have to...

I'd love to know who the people are that actually respond to those "buying" ads. You'd have to get lucky to even get a response since there are so many of those ads. Do they just pick the one to most recently spam Craigslist?

I live in a small town, and I've almost never got replies to any Wanted ads I've put up. Though last fall I got Phantasy Star Online I & II + III for GameCube from some dude for $15. That was cool.

Screw you, Uncle Fester.
Aw, don't say that :( If only the "continue" option would have let you begin near from where you died it would have been a good game. The music is awesome and i think the gameplay is rather solid. Starting from the beginning when you die ruins it all.

congrats chucker, on both the deal and the response! my city's too big & constantly flooded with WE BUY NES SNES GENESIS ETC CA$H IN HAND type shit

interesting responses, thanks guys! sounds like i need to more thoroughly clean some of these (alcohol's good but again metal polish is a miracle worker, funny how the cart labels seem to warn against this ), but once i get both the connectors replaced & lockout chip bypassed i should have a more reliable unit, cool. im guessing ill just game genie the tengen stuff to make life easier?

also, played River City Ransom this morning for the first time...holy crap this game's cool, i wasted too much of my childhood on that Double Dragon port. retronauts was right again.

My ad consists of:
Title: Looking for Retro Games SNES NES GENESIS TG16 N64 - $100 (Anywhere) - $100 (Anywhere)

Body:
Looking to build up my collection of Nintendo (NES), Super Nintendo (SNES), Genesis (GEN) and Turbografx 16 (TG16), and now Nintendo 64 games. I already have a couple of the high dollar items such as Earthbound, or Bubble Bobble 2, just trying to fill in some gaps, shoot me an email and tell me what you got!
I'm not looking to resell, just play. I've attached a picture of my (modest) collection to prove it.
Let me know what you have, and what you want for them, I'll come to you.

It then has a picture of my collection from a few months ago, and a 2nd picture showing that I have Earthbound so I'm not reselling etc.

It was first posted 3 months ago, and I didn't get a reply until last month, but the responses have been great since then.

None of these are recent purchases, but this is my small collection of NES games.

And finally, this game deserves its own picture.
