NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Just picked this up today, Hebereke (Ufouria: The Saga). Definitely a great deal as the store had it at 69% off, so I got the game for 1360 yen. Very cheap!

I went to the store to pick up these games , but it was such a good deal I couldn't resist. Too bad they didn't have their CIB copies on sale as those are 6500-7500 yen depending on condition.

Pretty amazing deal, especially since people seem to like selling it online for 80+
Yeah, really good deal for it.
Now I'm kind of regretting not picking up Snow Bros. as well, they had it with the same discount. Would have been about 2000 yen for the game (cart only). They had 4 Famicom available for sale including Hebereke and Snow Bros. I think I might go back tomorrow and see if it is still on sale, but I think it might've been a one day thing...

Anyway, I tried it out Hebereke and I'm loving it so far. Much better than playing it on my Wii/Plasma tv.

It's alive!

Would get far more if the items were individual or at least broken into smaller lots. It will be a steal for whoever wins. Although on a second look, quite a bit of it wouldn't be worth listing alone.

There are a few things I'd want. Too bad.

yeah, i know its easier that way but the boxes SNES stuff alone would be crazy. id be interested in the virtual boy! but i'd so get outbid (;_;)

Crisis Force is bloody fantastic. Great vert shooter from Konami with excellent use of parallax scrolling in some places, and the difficulty is not too out there.

I have to agree wholeheartedly. After playing the ROM, I plunked down $40 to get a loose copy. Opened it up and crammed it into a Gyromite converter and have been playing it non-stop for more than a week. It's easily the best vertical shmup on the NES. I like the two different weapon trees and the "super ship death ball launcher of awesomeness" upgrade.

I also think it's the most visually impressive shmup on the NES, because while Recca pushes more sprites, Crisis Force has some interesting backdrops too. There's a bit of slowdown and flicker later on, but it feels minimal given everything coming at you. Honestly, my first impression was "this looks like a Genesis" game.

I'm guessing it uses a custom mapper since NES reproductions of it are few and far between. I'd suggest anyone that has a Famicom or an adapter needs to play this on actual hardware.

I can't wait to get a custom label made for my Gyromite replacement.

Why are you selling, ido?

It's just stuff I don't want, really. I'm not a completionist or rare game collector, and I just enjoy owning games that I remember from my childhood.

My friend and I bought a few big hauls from Craigslist and picked out the stuff we wanted, and figured we would put the rest up to auction. It's fun for us to sort through all of this old stuff, because I am extremely nostalgic.

But basically, we bought more than we wanted because it's hard to turn down a lot of cool Nintendo stuff.

And I really can't believe it's at over $500 already.

That's awesome

And I totally want your AV Famicom.

So I was in a store buying a SFC game. and I noticed they also had a copy of Seirei Densetsu Lickle (aka Little Samson) in the case as well for only 1480 yen. I already own the game, but that was just such a low price I couldn't resist.

I paid 100 yen for the baseball game.

They also had an AV Famicom for a low price as well, 5,980 yen for it with 2 controllers, AC adapter and AV cable! The cheapest I usually see them are for about 9,000 yen, which is about what I paid for mine although some places have them as high as 12,000 yen.Thinking about picking it up to have a backup system...

Jealous. i wish I could still buy nes/famicom games in a store here in the US.

I just spent $44 for a copy of this on eBay (and $74 on Lickle which you got for the same money). I really want to go game shopping in Japan some day.

Was away for the weekend...
Ducktales 2, box has some discoloration, but not bad considering it is 20 years old. Game cartridge and manual are pristine.
(manual is out of focus, but I didn't want to change out the lens on my camera just for the shot)

Ducktales 1 here

Post Screen shots of game play! I did not know they made a 2nd game. Is the Music and Game play on the same level as the original?

Received this bad boy in the mail today....

contra01.jpg

It's a "reproduction" cartridge containing an English translation of the Famicom version of Contra -- complete with cutscenes, tree and snow animations in level 1/5, and apparently slightly-faster enemy bullets.

Also received another cartridge containingNinja Gaiden III with the unlimited continues and passwords put back.

Joe at The NES dump does great work!

Nice! I just bought the Famicom version for fifty bucks a few months ago. I love the extra effects and details.

Wow...how much would dracula kun, salamander, or splatterhouse wanpaku graffiti cost? That would be great if we could get some people to pick up cheap famicom games for other gaf, and then just pay for shipping.

Would beat ebay searching for sure.

That Contra cart is pretty sweet. Hope you enjoy it!
Loving it, but I definitely lost my touch over the years. I input the code and still ran out of lives while battling Red Falcon's heart. I notice enemy bullets seem to travel faster, and some enemies take slightly more hits....that threw me. I admit I was also too busy paying attention to how the scenery "throbs" in the Red Falcon stage.

I think my next purchases will be Recca Pure and Magic Kids (the hack that removes all McDonald's references from M.C. kids).

Though the new CIB Final Fantasy repros at www.uncletusk.com are freakin' amazing.

holy crap, look at that haul! i need to be that guy with my friends, haha...is that Flintstones as well? damnn

also man now i gotta see what we missed out on with Contra, wonder why that stuff got dropped from ours? still a classic, but that sounds awesome

I believe Contra came out a year later in Japan, and Konami used that time to put it on a custom mapper similar to the MMC3 that allowed for the added animations. They also used 128k PRG and CHR ROM chips in the JP version, instead of just 128k PRG ROM, which I'm guessing allowed the extra room for the cut scenes.

The nice thing is, now that people can buy bare boards and MMC3-esque mapper chips, games that used the MMC3 or mappers that can be patched to work with MMC3 no longer have to have donor carts torn up to salvage the parts.

Surprisingly came across both Heavy Barrel and Battle for Olympus in great shape while messing around some thrift shops the other day. The rest of the stuff was decent or just random sports games.

Also seems like they just priced by cover art :p

Battle for Olympus was 3 bucks:

Heavy barrel was 5 bucks:

And... Kid Niki RADICAL NINJA was 9 bucks:

Regardless, i'm glad to finally have Battle for Olympus after hearing about it early in the thread, and Heavy Barrel seemed interesting from some videos I found searching for run and guns.

I visited a local guy who turned his collection into a game museum. Some pretty cool stuff there. I got to try Mr Gimmick, which is really rather awesome. Also tried one of the worst games ever, Road Fighter, as well as the horrible U-Force controller.

I think I'll have a look at the JP PSone version of Mr Gimmick. It's certainly a lot less expensive...

Just a little follow-up about the Kazzo NES dumper.

The moment I heard about about it in this thread I instantly bought it. I got it yesterday and tried to figure it out for hours but I got the hang of it and made a thread about it and a tutorial that make things quite simple actually.

Take a look if you're interested. :)

^that's pretty cool Seik!

also id totally have picked up those games on the covers alone, Tekno...post back if they're any good! never played them.

TIL there's a PS1 version of Gimmick.

Still pricey...

Havent messed with Olympus yet, but Heavy Barrel is kinda cool. Its no Contra or Silius (still need to get that, but from what i've seen and heard on Back in my Play, should be up there)...but its pretty fun.

The stages are continuous, no score tally screen or cutscenes in between area bosses. You just keep running/riding an elevator/etc.right into the next area...well after you blow up a barrier after the boss anyway.

Its a top down shooter with a few forced scrolling sections (usually an elevator scene), but most of the time you'll find yourself running to the very edge of the screen to force the game to scroll forward. You'd think this would bring about cheap deaths, but enemies usually give you a decent amount of time to respond to their appearance.

The weapons are similar to most run n gun games, the way you unlock them is a little different. You defeat red soldiers who drop red keys, which are then used to unlock blue battle chests that are placed around the field. Inside each chest can be an icon that ups your grenade count (you start out with a generous 40 or so), give you extra lives, a new weapon such as the spread shot or flame shot (both of which have finite ammo, so make every shot hit its mark), or a weapon piece.

The weapon pieces eventually come together to grant you the game's name sake: Heavy Barrel blaster, which is a huge gun that shoots giant waves of energy for a limited amount of time. There is even a digitized voice clip that shouts "Heavy Barrow!" once you put all the pieces together.

The graphics are about what you'd expect for a decent NES title, nothing too flashy, but they arent bad by any means. The music is good, but nothing stand out so far... All in all its a good title. Nothing to really just scour the markets for, but if you see it for a cheap price, its a definite purchase. And yes there is two player co-op.

I loved the hell out of Totally Rad. I remember my friend having a copy, and I would always want to borrow it from him. It really wasn't very popular considering how good it was.

I also remember California Games just because of the cover. Thank you, bikini girl.

starting modding about 45 universal game cases for NES use...they're not all comin out pretty, but they're getting the job done & finally holding the carts! had to borrow a dremel from my brother to make this happen, kinda debating doing another 15-20 for carts on my want list just to have em done before returning this thing, gotta go order some first.

Yeah, NES games are a pain in the ass and nothing makes them look good inside, but luckily the insert hides the mess.

My first game system. Super Mario Bros. was the arcade game to play along with Double Dragon. I could beat either on 50 cents. My dads version of Xmas shopping for me that year was to take me threw Toys R Us and have me point at something. My eyes settled on the NES with the Robot (which I never used), Gun (which I only used for Duck Hunt), and most importantly Super Mario Bros. Then I was like wow, you can play this at home? Without quarters? A few Ninja Gaidens and Super Mario Bros. games later cemented me as a gaming legend. I could conquer any game.

I may be insane, but I plunked down $87 for Mighty Final Fight NES with manual yesterday. A bit more than I wanted to spend, but hey the loose cart has jumped up to the $80+ range the last couple months and either supplies are drying up or someone is hoarding. I really have a soft spot for this game and the Capcom Classics Mini Mix just wasn't doing it for me.

No continues so far...I think I might just blast through! Also that quarterback cyborg wasnt as hard as I thought... Womp was right, and I thought my jump wouldnt clear the guy, but you always just make it over its head.

Probably a little of both (i'm sure that manual is worth more than extra 7 bucks, people pay more for Earthbound, and thats not really supposed to be rare). Those that have the game and actually play or just let it sit in a collection aren't letting it go.

On a sorta related subject...how is Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight (lol)?
