For only being released a year later Ys 1 >>> The Legend of Zelda

It may have auto attacks by way of the "bump system" so the combat may not be as good but wow, the rest of the game is just so much more realized than the original legend of zelda. All of the little side stories of the people in the town are really enjoyable and so is the main plot.

I feel like my eyes have been opened on a great franchise as the only one from this series I barely remember playing was a side scrolling one on SNES.

How does the rest of series stack up to other top down action rpgs?

My plan is after finishing Ys 1 is to do Ys 2, Oath and then Origin over the course of this month. So I may keep coming back to this thread to discuss this series with other fans.

Ys 1 was a game that was very much ahead of its time. It's very impressive when you compare it to its peers like Final Fantasy 1, Phantasy Star 1, Dragon Quest 1, The Legend of Zelda, etc.

Ys is one of my favorite game series and I would heartily recommend every entry. The side-scrolling entry you speak of, Ys 3, is one of the weaker ones, but it has a remake called Oath in Felghana that's available in English on PSP and Steam.

I just beat Origin today and started Oath. Really enjoyed Origin, first time playing the series. I am looking forward to the vita game coming out now.

YS1 only has mazes and really has nothing on Zelda when it comes to puzzle solving, though for some people that could be seen as a plus.

Ys 1 was my first jrpg - on the Master System.

And when I played it, I had no idea what was going on (was just a kid)

Ys is honestly one of the best game series of all time and I am constantly confused at how unknown it is.

I also like how the world in Y's holds itself really well. The second one is just as good, if not better. I'm talking about the PCE CD version though so I don't know how the Famicom version is. However, Zela is a masterpiece of gaming. You really can't compare the two.

I didn't know that about Oath so it will be interesting to see how much I remember.

Ys 1 absolutely has better boss battles than Zelda 1 (although Ys 1 also has some really lame bosses too...), but I think Ys's exploration is pretty weak in comparison, and that's a pretty big part of Zelda 1.

I might put Ys 2 above Zelda 1 (although it might not be a fair comparison since I've only played the Chronicles versions of the original Ys games), but I think I like the first Zelda more than the first Ys.

I actually like 3 better than most of them.

Y's book 1 and 2 were cool but i wouldn't put them in the same league as zelda. not enough polish.

and the tower of book 2 was mind numbingly boring.

Always meant to play this series. How does one legally obtain the first game? is there a PC version?

It will be interesting to play it now, as I just finished a play through of the original Legend of Zelda, and am struggling to play through Phantasy Star 1 (which REALLY does not hold up well in my opinion)

I remember playing Crystallis during a retro kick a few years ago, and being shocked that it not only didn't bury zelda, but was a one hit wonder with no sequels. It was soo good!
Though to be fair, I believe that one launched quite a bit later than zelda...
Never tried ys, don't they have that on steam now?

This thread also reminds me that I still need to play Origins. How is it fellow fans?

It's become my favorite Ys game, displacing Ys 2 which held that spot for a very, very long time. But it's quite different from the others. It's more of a dungeon crawler. No towns or anything.

Even YS Seven?

It's one of my favourites and I see a lot of people complain about it.

what's this, a parallel universe? Ys was really a neat unidimensional game compared to The Legend of Zelda. this comparison makes no sense.

I see a lot of bickering towards Ys 7 in the fanbase for the whole changing characters aspect and you seem like a huge Ys fan.

Did you have any problems with Ys 7?

Overall, I enjoyed Ys 7. I didn't really care for its much larger focus on exposition, and I'm not a very big fan of the party system either. I would rather have seen them further explore the possibilities with platforming and things like that in the series. Ys 7 was also really easy because of the flash guard system, which they fortunately addressed in Ys Celceta, which is based on Ys 7's systems, just tightened across the board.

The "problem" some people have with it is that it's too easy compared to the other entries. I also don't like the bosses as much as in the other games. It's not a bad game though, far from it, and there are many people who like it the most.

I'm playing Origin on Steam right now and it's gorgeous maxed out. Art direction does wonders even though the games are made for such weak hardware. I'm glad they're selling well too, can't wait for the next Ys Steam release.

I don't want to ask what's the best jumping on point, but more, what's the best entry if you just want to get a taste, and not play the entire ys' series? That's also available on steam?
I guess, just the best game, is what I'm asking for.

Before Oath and Origin went up on Steam, all Ys was to me was the group of games at the end of the list any time I was searching for game music or wallpapers or what have you. I jumped in during the summer sale last year, and now Ys is one of my favorite series of all time. That music is just god-tier, and the games are no bullshit straight to the action fun.

Oath in Felghana served me very well as a jumping on point. Amazing game, and it's basically self contained too. So I would suggest that if you want to see what the fuss is.

I still didn't play Celceta as I am waiting for localization.

It's rather closer to the Ys 7 than older entries, right?

I wonder if that's the future of Ys....also Ys 7 is definitely one of the easiest entries unless you don't level up your characters evenly.

Sounds good, the dungeon crawling is the best part of the series.

Well, that and the music.

The PC Engine version of Ys 1+2 is still among my favorites for actually merging the two games into one long game. In contrast to later remakes which usually include both games, but keep them separate gameplay-wise.

Is Oath known for being hard or am I just bad at it?

Yes, I'd say both Oath in Felghana and Origin are the hardest games in the series. Or, well, at least from the more recent ones. Ys I and II can be hard too, but I don't particularly enjoy the challenge in terms of gameplay in those games, so I refrain from trying NM there, lol. Still, back to YsF and YsO, they're about the same in terms of boss difficulty for me, but the dungeons in YsF are MUCH harder, because the enemies are overall a lot more threatning. One little slip can cost you a big chunk of your life.

Because clearly showing appreciation for Ys 1 in and of itself was impossible.

It's not like he was bashing Zelda. All the guy did was point out that Ys I is a game that is far ahead of its time, and used something famous and influential to prove his point. I'd say it's a pretty valid comparison to start a discussion about games back then in general.

Ys 1&2 chronicles, Oath in Felghana and Ys 7 are all available on the PSP/Vita. If you're new to the series, it's recommended to start with either OiF or 7.

That said, OiF for PSP has double boost, which makes the game easier than the PC version. You can only do it once on PC, and it doesn't make you completely invincible like the PSP version. Or at least that's how I remember it.

How did you defeat that boss that you face on the bridge with the spikes? I...I just can't do it :(

Time your jumps. He ends up being pretty easy once you figure out his shtick.
