What? Why?

Why are people prioritizing those numbers over their the graphical settings? What do those numbers even mean? I presumed it was a measure of frame-rate, but do people really prefer to turn off shadows, reduce texture quality, and such in order to boost their frame-rate from 60+ to over 120+ or something?

I can only get 2700 on Standard Laptop settings. I've been testing to see what effects I can salvage while keeping my score over 2000 (the listed "standard" score). The game doesn't look that great at Standard settings. I have no idea why someone would put up with it if they can get better and still have a score that high.

Uh... if you're running at 5.5k you're not hitting 60fps consistently. I have a 10k benchmark and my fps dips below 60.

What do those numbers correspond to then? I am not primarily a PC guy, I don't run a lot of benchmarks, and the benchmark itself doesn't tell me. So I don't know what those numbers are supposed to mean. Would you please inform me?

Why is everyone getting on the roe bandwagon....:( Go back to your stupid cat girls.

Don't be mad that cat people are so superior to all the other races. It was destiny.

The benchmark is a bit annoying because it only shows the average framerate, which is a useless indicator for how much you drop when you're around 936 other people in town for instance.

The best way to get an idea of your minimum framerate when it's a busy scene is to have FRAPS running and watch it. The scene where they are fighting the coeurls at the beach and the party on chocobos pass by is the one which knocks me down the lowest during the benchmarks.

There are still shadows on Standard, I believe, although they aren't as detailed.

Personally, Standard looks great to me and, given that my PC is several years old and aside from FFXIV no other future PC game interests me, I really have no interest to upgrade for a single game. Sure, it might not look as impressive as High/Maximum, but at least it should run at a decent rate.

The game definitely doesn't look bad at Standard, at least to me. You just don't get a lot of the extra flourishes that come with the higher graphical settings [more detailed grass/shadows/character models, etc.].

They correspond directly to your fps. Basically the higher number, the higher and more consistant frame rate you have.

It's just a meassure to able to tell how well the game runs on your PC, 5.500 corresponds to fairly high, which means you can reach 60fps+ on dungeons and such but with lot of things on screen your fps will drop it some occasions below 30fps.

From there you work with settings to get more points until you obtain perfect 60fps.

I'm one of those that don't care slowdown on a MMO if I can make it look good. I mean XI was constantly sub 30fps and I played fine.

Shadows are probably still on Standard Desktop settings, but on Standard Laptop shadows are disabled for all players and NPCs other than your character. It is a little disconcerting watching the benchmark test and seeing the whole group of people riding on chocobos while only one person has a shadow.

Ah, that might be. I never did try the Standard Laptop settings test, so that's a possibility.

Yeah, I can understand that. Not having shadows in a persistent game like this would irk me. Actually, the next time I run the test I should see if the shadows under Standard apply to other characters as well as my own. If I have shadows and no one else does, that would bother me way too much. ~_~

Very much agree. Better to have no shadows at all than to only have them on your character, it's all or none.

I was satisfied turning down the Shadow Resolution to 512 and using the low detail models in shadows, then leaving the Shadow Softening at Strong. Boosted the performance while keeping a decent appearance as far as I was concerned.

Is everyone decided on their classes? I played CNJ on phase 3, it was ok but at the end it was getting kinda boring. Thing I liked was that my queue times were less than 5 secs

On the default high setting which I scored 5.5k on I had 48fps average. On standard which I scored 10.5k on I had average 88 fps.

I'm doing Arcanist first. I already have a 50 CJN/WHM, but Scholar looks far more interesting to play and heal as imo.

Yeah, I will be playing a Gladiator. I have played a tank in every MMO I have played so far, and I see no reason to change that policy. My brother will be playing a Conjurer, so I already have a party lined up. Whenever the two of us used the Duty Finder to get into a Guildhest or dungeon during the beta, we got in literally instantaneously.

The only thing I am undecided about is what class to pursue second.

I'm starting out as an Arcanist just to try it out and also so Limsa Lominsa can be my starting area. And then when I get to level 15 I'll swap over to Conjurer, which is what I'll use as my primary job.

I'm honestly not sure. Didn't enjoy Archer very much in Phase 3, but I only got to like level 16 and I really want to be a bard. Eh, it's not a big deal anyways, I'll be leveling up every class to try out the shard classes with the familar names.

Whenever Red Mage happens that will be my main class.

So I just ran through the Standard Settings benchmark and shadows were indeed selected only for your character. :(

However, I tweaked the settings to included other NPC's and it only decreased my score by 100 or so [7700 instead of 7800]. According to the results, my average frame-rate should be 66, but I'm sure that will lessen in populated areas.

Either way, I'm happy!

Not to sure how they can send it out to me, they dont have my email. I pre ordered two weeks ago, too. Just going to contact them.

Marauder, or at least Paladin. I played as BLM for years in XI and I need a breath of fresh air, so a tank will do. Plus getting a bad tank is the worst thing that can happen in this game since he pulls/decides the enemies order/ETC, so I prefer to have not leave anything to chance.

Since I see a lot of people posting their characters... I think I'll join in on the fun.

Also tossing around the idea of going with this hairstyle.

That's pretty damn hot. However I would recommend (or maybe it's just the screenshot) working with a more darker base color with some highlights. Makes the light colors go and it just looks damn good.

Not sure if this is a common issue that was brought up already, but when I run the benchmark, I can pick a character, then clicking confirm just closes it, it is erroring somehow?

I got an i5 3570K, and a GTX 670.

I do have 2 monitors, but turning one off doesn't fix it.

No, that's what it supposed to do. After that you actually run the benchmark from the main benchmark menu by clicking Start.

Hmm, this is the only possible darker base color without changing colors completely.
I kind of like it but I'm not sure if I want her hair to be so dark.

I might either remove the highlights entirely or change the color... or something.
Not sure.
