Death Grips don't show up to an after show, crowd destroys their equipment....

Future of rap? Good lord I hope not. This stuff is straight garbage.

Just more bizarre noise that no-taste honkeys are calling "music".

No, they really are pushing boundaries in different genres but like all art it's subjective. No sound is universally praised, and this band's music is no exception. I personally love their work.

I love that in the mind of many Gaffers musicians need to be 'respectful' and 'professional'. Fuck that noise. I want abrasive fucking dickhead rock stars. I can't take the white upper-middle class, boring ass nice guys any more. Please, no more Arctic Monkeys or Coldplay. More Axl Rose.

I think the central complaint there is that these guys just aren't all that good at being rebellious dickheads. Like, Kanye West? There's your modern-day Axl Rose. Death Grips' behaviour just comes off as annoying, plus 99% of the impact from their actions pisses off their fans, which just seems ill-advised and confusing.

Oh come the fuck on. Saying that these guys are the evolution of music or whatever is pretty dumb but this bullshit hipster rhetoric that pops up all the time everywhere is so tired.

Hahaha, this thread is so full of angry, old people yelling at 'hipsters' because they don't understand the world anymore.

We definitely need more rock and roll, destroying hotel rooms, early deaths on massive drugs overdose type musicians than what most (mainstream) bands are these days.

Oh i understand. I just don't respect talentless crappy music. There's a lot of good hiphop of different sorts of sub-genres but this ain't one of them.

Saying that Zach Hill has no talent is just wow. Listen to Hella, Team Sleep and all the other projects he worked on. You're just confused because the music is too much for you to handle.

Dude, he just said he understands, as do most of here. But come on, you can't really believe this music is as amazing as some people in here are sayin. It's OK.

You are coming across as a bigger douche than the people knee-jerk rejecting the music.

Come on, son.

Really? You're not helping your case here.

Yeah, really. Some of the most respected musicians in the industry (Mike Patton, Chino Moreno, etc.) have worked with Zach Hill exactly because he IS so talented. There is no other case to be made. Hill is talented. He has a whole article discribing his unique, inventive and complex drumming style on Wikipedia. Calling him talentless means the guy obviously has no clue what talent is.

That is Zach Hill on drums. If you claim he has no talent, you are speaking from sheer ignorance or have no fucking clue. Or both. You might not like the aesthetic, can't connect because it's too complex and convoluted, hell, you might simply prefer other sounds. But saying this guy has no talent makes you look like an idiot. Sorry.

I think most people, even fans, understand the initial dismissive attitude to Death Grips. It's not easy to love upon first impression; I remember struggling to get through The Money Store last year after seeing all the critical acclaim, but it did click and ended up being one of my favourite albums of the year.

Many albums you can just leave on the in the background for a few listens until you start appreciating them but you can't ignore Death Grips because they're so sonically aggressive. They're well worth it though, in my opinion. The production is creative as fuck, dismissing it as noise just because it's intense and grimy and, admittedly, overwhelming, is way off the mark. That isn't to say that you have to like it, of course.

Goes to show how separated I've become from the whole indie scene but it's really hard for me to believe that this band is huge. I don't understand how you could want to put that it and like, jam out to this. So stilted and angry. It's the same reason I don't like metal.
I guess these guys are like the Sex Pistols? Important but garbage to most people's ears.

I remember one time I let my friend borrow my copy of "The Money Store" and he came back to school after that weekend and him and his friend were saying how Death Grips changed their lives and they were listening to the album at lunch and they were bobbing their heads together in sync....gotta love people who admire Pitchfork

So, I knew of Zack Hill but never really gave him a listen in anything except for Team Sleep. Which makes me have to ask why he is wasting his time with this.

In a interview, he said that he was more into hip-hop or something and that's why he really enjoys being in Death Grips

I understand how this band can appeal to some people but they're just not for me. I also find it disrespectful to use a suicide note for their background

Or their tastes in music are different from yours.

Very true. I can see that these guys have a passionate fanbase. Probably shouldn't have worded my post the way I did. I just personally have a hard time listening to these tracks and getting enjoyment out of it.

On topic, shitty thing to not show up. Last thing you want after standing around clustered next to 50 sweaty dudes in a pit is to not have any reason to have been there in the first place. I can see why the fans would get a little mad.

This thread is full of awesome.

Older guys with life experience and probably way more going on in life than tracking down the latest 'hot' bands hating this music and young hipsters thinking that music is going to change the world.

Guess what, us old guys use to talk the same way about Rage Against the Machine. It didn't change anything but its great nostalgia when you hear one of their songs.

to be honest this band is decisive enough that it's not fair to just say "old guys" aren't digging this.

I really like "I've Seen Footage"... kinda scared to listen to anything else based off the reactions in here haha.

WHOA Zach Hill is amazing. I'm watching that "HELLA - Been a Long Time Cousin" right now.

I'll never call music shit because it's different, but I will say that this is about as listenable to me as Wall Noise. More power to you if you can enjoy it, you are clearly more advanced than I am when it comes to appreciating experimental music.

Sorry, I'm old enough to have heard Rage Against the Machine when they first came out, and I never liked them or thought of them as important. Death Grips are way more interesting. And as far as changing things, I hear Death Grips' influence all over one of the most hyped and popular albums of the year (Yeezus).

And I guess people who think of Death Grips as noise have probably never heard Throbbing Gristle or Merzbow...

Pitchfork gave Ex-Military a 7.5 and 8.7 is too low for The Money Store. They're in the same league as modern Rolling Stones for all I care, out of touch old hipsters giving out 8.4s like they're candy.

I'd compare it to drill and bass than literal wall noise. But then again, I'm also genuinely confused that people found Yeezus too experimental so maybe I've gone too far off the deep end.

Old school hiphop head here (35, grew up in BK in the 90's prime), never heard of these guys before but some of its alright. Interesting for sure. Its funny because back in the day El-p, co flow, Slug, anticon, etc use to get a lot of the same crap about their music. Now I'm not saying these guys are the same but they are pushing hiphop and creating bridges in genre, sound, etc which is a good.

Some of their stuff is a bit much for my tastes but I dont see how people are saying its noise or garbage across the board.

Also +1 on Yeezus sound really heavily influenced by these guys. (a good thing IMO, people like kanye can smooth shit out)

This had nothing to do with age. And what's wrong with spending time discovering new music? I hope I never stop seeking out fresh art and culture. You sound bitter, man.

I don't understand how strongly opinionated both sides of this are. I think DG are pretty great, but I get that they're super abrasive and not for everyone.
