Yup, exactly what happened. Came in with an open mind, didn't really dig it, get called an uncultured simpleton. The irony is I know more about musical composition than anyone who would consider this ground breaking or whatever fucking buzzwords kids are using these days. This is like 2 notches higher than dubstep, seriously, enjoy your dreck.

this has got to be one of the douchiest comments I have ever seen on GAF

But in relation to the story, it's super shitty that the band didn't show. I'm not exactly too broken up about their shit getting broken up. Unless they couldn't make due uncontrollable circumstances like a car wreck or something. But if that was the case why not just make an announcement about it?

I don't see anything groundbreaking happening in the songs that were posted so far but I guess this is just one of those bands people will defend until the hype dies off.

It's mostly a love/hate thing. I can totally see why you won't like it upon first listen. Challenging music takes time, but it's a worthwhile investment. It's an aquired taste, and very rewarding in the long run.

Try this song. It's their most commercial track, and fairly straight forward. Still very good, and the lyrics are interesting.

I can safely say that all my favorite bands have taken me a while to get into. Some of them I even hated initially. As a musician and composer, I force myself to experience new music I wouldn't normally listen to. Otherwise I'd just stagnate creatively. Maybe it's differnt for other folks, I have no idea.

This song kinda reminds me of Push It by Salt n Pepa...

Not seeing something groundbreaking /= band that people stan for all the time lol

Hacker is the most quotable song ever. So good.

"The table's flipped now we got all the coconuts, bitch!"

death grips is awesome and this is unfortunately not really that surprising given their previous antics

i'm seeing them in nyc next week so i hope they show up to that. i saw them a few months ago and they were awesome live.

Sorry I meant fans will defend. And I definitely don't think people will defend them all the time. Once they get a huge hit the majority of fans will turn on them.

They're already pretty huge. A lot of their fans are Zach Hill loyalists anyway.

Back in my day if you liked a band's music but thought they were jerks/didn't like how they treated you as a fan, you stopped going to their shows, you didn't destroy their property.

Ohk, gotcha. Their first album didn't sell terrible though. *shrugs*

I never understood the idea of band becomes a big hit -> stop liking their work after a certain time. Some people are just odd.

Haha, not even just that. Zach used to always be involved with a bunch of projects at the same time, but these days, he seems pretty much just dedicated to Death Grips. Not enough Zach Hill now.

The girl she got to drum for her on Chronicles of Marnia just wasn't the same :(

I haven't felt like an entire musical career of a band/artist has been an elaborate troll for a long time. These guys, from album to performance, are just trollin' everyone and anyone that defends it is falling for it the hardest.

yeah they don't even play instruments its all computer u can't spell crap without rap

You could accuse pretty much any artist who contributed to the advancing of a medium of being a troll, but nothing before is quite like them and they influence a lot of artists after them so I guess what I'm getting at is accusing any major artist except people like 50 Cent
(and even he is only a troll outside the context of his music)
of being a troll is horseshit unless you're going to say art is just a troll, in which case you're just a dumbass.

It's weird as a grown-up to see a band trying to act punk. I mean, I can see how that kind of uncompromising, chaotic attitude gets them fans, but they just seem unprofessional most of the time.
Exactly. It's like not showing up to work. Dudes, you aren't 16 anymore.

So you don't understand the appeal of something, and that leads you to believe that people who like it are full of shit? Such enlightened thinking.

I see Death Grips parallel with Andy Kaufman. Closest comparison I can think of at the moment.

If I put in the time to adequately explain my viewpoint I feel as if I would be putting more effort and taking the whole discussion more seriously than Death Grips has with everything they've put out so far. So, with my fairly lame analogy - take it as you will.

Oh my god. Those weren't fans that destroyed their gear, those were people with functioning hearing apparatuses trying to stop this shit from spreading.

lol.

Ive tried so many times to listen to DG and it just sounds like shit to me. Its like Saul Williams got a couple friends and decided to troll people. But Saul Williams doesnt suck.

DG fans, go listen to Saul Williams.

Look, I was being theatrical. No offense intended.

Regarding Death Grips; It's simple. It's raw. It speaks to people. It's the simplicity that gives it weight. There's a certain hubris in their music, yet it's honest and humble. It captures a lot of my feelings about modern life, social media, and our increasing numbness towards violence.

I'm not even sure what you're trying to say with your comment regarding musical composition. Please elaborate.
Very well said as usual.

finally, an OT hip hop thread that makes me long for an eminem one

Then I'm out on hiphop.

If this is it's direction it might as well be motherfucking polka music or yodeling solos.

oh man this is disappointing, i bet you were really down for hip hop pushing past its borders before too

The irony is I know more about musical composition than anyone who would consider this ground breaking or whatever fucking buzzwords kids are using these days. .

that totally is ironic, as everyone knows the best musicians all took music theory in your classroom i bet

"i don't like it, so the only way anyone could possibly feel otherwise is if the artist is playing an elaborate game and making them think they're enjoying it"

this is what it sounds like when a 5th grader comes across the basics of solipsism

From the Death Grips I've heard, it'd be amazing without the vocals. Gonna give The Money Store a few listens and see if it grows on me.

Death Grips own.

Also @ people who are saying "I have to force myself to like this": taste isn't something you're born with. You develop it. Otherwise, you'd still be eating dinosaur nuggets and KidCuisine.

Also, you missed the point of adolescence if you only like the shit your parents listened to.

Taste is subjective, and is not a data point used to measure one's maturity.

E: Haha. Yeah it is. Taste is a good indicator of maturity. I'm defending the idea of acquired taste.

Mostly because the criticisms in this thread are incredibly inspid, immature and unoriginal. It's reminiscent of the same shitlords who look at modern art and say out loud "my kid can do that."

Just another notch in the "reasons why I moved far, far away from Chicago" list. Fuck Chicago, the city is destined to fail now. This is a terrible incident that's going to be blown the fuck out of proportions. Chicago was once an amazing city, but it is now so rapidly devolving into a complete shit show.

I saw Death Grips in Cleveland a few months back. It was one of the best shows I've ever gone to. I would have been so fucking disappointed if I went to their show and they didn't show up.

I have many acquired tastes but I don't think this music will ever be one of them.
