New 3DS System Update (StreetPass Relay Feature)

Sweet! Looking forward to trying this on Wednesday as I ride my bike around town as I have a nice handful of these Nintendo Zones.

The way Nintendo Zones work is that they're basically unsecured WiFi hotspots that the 3DS is pre-configured to automatically connect to. So it'll connect to the spot as you walk through it, just like connecting to your home WiFi. No need to open an app or the system at all.

Wait, so say I turn my smartphone into a hotspot with the same SSID as a Nintendo Zone (like Best Buy). Does that mean I can use my phone as a portable Nintendo Zone? It would be great if I don't have to carry my bulky 3DS XL around to get StreetPasses. All I would have to do is carry my phone around until someone's 3DS connects to it, then when I'm at home with my 3DS I connect it to the hotspot to receive whatever StreetPass data my phone got.

... how would your phone know how to get and send the data?

It's very shitty. So, I'll get a new streetpass and then my boyfriend will get my streetpass just after that? This doesn't fix much. Was hoping it'd amass the streetpasses.:(

Yeah. This is gonna result in problems for groups of siblings (which I see a lot at places like McD) unless say all THREE manage to get the previous person. It really needs to store at least 3-4 people.

Save yourself the trouble and just carry your 3DS around. The Nintendo Zone places probably have special software from Nintendo to get the StreetPass Relay stuff to work.

I don't know, but I used it to get the Animal Crossing Best Buy DLC from the comfort of my home. It probably handles StreetPass data differently but...a man can dream.

I'm too embarrassed to carry my 3DS out in the open so I just leave it in my backpack. I don't take my backpack everywhere though, so this would be a good way of potentially getting more StreetPasses. If it worked, of course.

This is rather underwhelming, to say the least. But I suppose downloading 10 passes every time you walk by a McDonalds would have been TOO easy.

The number I've heard tossed around for the 3DS wireless range is ninety to a hundred feet.

So I guess that means two 3DSes need to be within about two hundred feet of each other?

How long does it usually take for the data to transfer to another 3DS? The 3DS would have to be within range for at least 15 seconds if its sending a Mii and that players streetpass game data to your 3DS right?

But every time you leave home without your 3DS and then come back, even if your phone had interacted with 100 3DSes, you would still only get one StreetPass for your own 3DS.

I am not sure on the exact time, but fifteen seconds seems extreme, I would guess way less.

I bring mine to work and when I park next to my friend, the light on the system turns green within seconds. I get 4-5 Streetpasses a day just letting it sit in my car.

Hint: No one cares about you and they're focused on their life and problems. You learn that as you get older. I'm 32 and play my flame red 3DS on the subway daily and no one cares.

This is something I'm trying to force learn about my taste in music. I know no one cares, but what if someone cares that I listen to Japanese speed metal! What will I do!?

My 3DS, though, I rock loud and proud. Fuck the haters, I know what I like there.

The fact that's it's only one user at a time is a disappointing. But it's better than nothing. Gonna have to remember to wave my 3DS at the McDonald's by my office every time I walk by it!

Damn, I thought this would be better than just one person at select locations. Oh well, a walk on campus and by the nearby McDonalds and Starbucks will give me some Streetpasses.

Cool shit. I live in front of a McDonalds. Time for all you motherfuckers to water my plants. >:D

Yes! I live 2-3 minutes away from a McDonalds, and probably 30-60 minutes from a couple of AT&T hotspots. Can't wait to test these out in the evening tomorrow.

Have next to no streetpass' since launch. Doesn't help that I hardly take my 3DS out. I can't play games unless I'm in a comfortable position lol.

Have a Nintendo zone at university however.

Hooray! This will hopefully vastly increase my puzzle completion rate over long stretches of nothing interrupted by huge spikes during Gen Con and PAX. And will actually justify buying those games from that damn rabbit.

Yippee! Though will I know if its a Nintendo Zone pass? I love seeing that green light and then observing my surroundings, "which one of these people is a nerd just like me?"

Man, my streetpass is gonna filled up quick. Working in Manhattan, I already get around 6-8 passes a day (Today I got 10). With Starbucks everywhere, I assume I'm gonna taste the problem 3DS owners in Japan face now.

None anywhere near me, no 3DS owners where I live. I might as well be fucked.

I feel like I'm missing out on all dat StreetPass action. I haven't had a hit since MK7 launched, and that was from my brother's 3DS.

Shame I didnt see this before leaving for work.

Still, probably too soon for anyone else to have done it either.

I got an Animal Crossing house via StreetPass from someone called PIKMIN 3. The house was all decked out in Pikmin gear, is it Nintendo promotion or a very devoted fan?

This is my last hope for any streetpassing.
It's been more then a year and I have 4 passes total.

I have 2,703 since I got a 3DS XL a year ago.

1,200 was from 4 days of Anime Expo 2013. Anime conventions are a godsend to streetpasses. Too bad about that 10 cap, I know I missed a hell of a lot of people because of that stupid cap. Raise it to 20, 35, or 50 nintendo, it is nowhere near enough for conventions.

Nisei week and Japan Expo USA will add a good 500-800 more people :)

It's probably going to be disappointing if there are only a few active passers in a town, even if there are a load of relays.

But visiting a big city infrequently should be great.

Add me to the list of people wondering what happens when two people pass the spot at the same time together and have recently StreetPassed each other.

Say we have three people. Persons A, B, and C:
-Person A has data for StreetPass Plaza, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, and Monster Hunter.
-Person B has data for StreetPass Plaza and Animal Crossing.
-Person C has data for StreetPass Plaza and Fire Emblem.

-Persons B and C live together and have recently StreetPassed each other.

Obviously, when Person A passes the Nintendo Zone hotspot, they'll leave their data behind for StreetPass Plaza, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, and Monster Hunter, all while picking up any previous data.

But when persons B and C pass that hotspot together, what will happen?

Will
1) person B (assuming theirs registers first) get the StreetPass Plaza and Animal Crossing data, leaving person C to get just Fire Emblem data?
2) persons B and C both get the Plaza data because they pass at "approximately" the same time?
3) or perhaps person C just gets nothing at all?

Assuming the first case, will a hypothertical person D with Monster Hunter then get the Monster Hunter data?

The whole thing sounds a bit sketchy simply because of the "last person to pass" wording. I was really hoping it would maybe store each person's streetpass data until it's been distributed say, 10 times, or that person passes again (at which point the counter would reset) thus allowing each person to get multiple StreetPasses each time they pass a Nintendo Zone. Surely this isn't asking too much when some people in rural America are lucky to get 1 pass a day while people in Japan probably get dozens.

I guess I'll find out how this bodes for my two-system rural household next time we take a trip to town.
