When I was pretty young I ended up getting attacked as I got off the school bus by a couple kids who didn't like that I told them to quit the shit when they were harassing some girl that was a couple years younger then us. Came up from behind me as I got off and just kicked the crap out of me and no one did anything, bus just pulled off to go to the next stop. Ended up with some broken bones and pretty bad internal bleeding / bruising. I still have issues with my kidneys / internal organs to this day from the attack and yet I still don't blame anyone on the bus, the driver included for not stepping in.

There is a really fine line you have to walk when dealing with kids as an adult and stepping into a fight is just asking for more trouble. To much can go wrong and should anything happen you are at the mercy of a legal system that is likely to rule in favor of the bullies and there family regardless of what actually happened. Step in if you think the person who is being attacked's life is legitimately in danger but otherwise you are better off doing what you can to call in the police or someone who can step in without fear of repercussions.

Not that I encourage this, but if you go out and try to get someone in trouble, sent to jail, foster care, away from their family, etc...how do you not expect this to happen? If you try to take someone's freedom away, this is what happens next time they see you. Also, I'm sorry but the beating is not that brutal. I got jumped a few times in high school by grown ass manchilds, and one of the times was almost the same thing, a teacher saw it happen and just watched until the beating stopped, and then came to my aid and took me to the office. I didn't expect him to step in and potentially face a lawsuit from the kids' parents, and didn't expect this bus driver to, either.

When I subbed, I tried to break up a fight once. NEVER AGAIN. I didn't get hurt, but it's almost impossible to stop a fight on your own....especially when there are more than 2 people involved.

Calling for help is the correct thing to do.

There really needs to be some more protection, or an anonymous way to tell teachers, parents, or any figure of authority when a kid sees something wrong. The school preaches to the kids to not get involved, tell a teacher. A kid shouldn't have to live a life in fear because he did the right thing.

The protocol for this situation calls for the bus driver to just call the cops. He did all that was necessary according to the bus company, but he should have made some effort to separate the attackers from the victim.

He is 64 years old, but it's not an excuse as to why he couldn't have put his body between the attackers and the victim. Frankly, the age excuse for anything is fucking bullshit.
