Godfrey Bloom, a politician in the UK Independence Party, has been criticised for referring to countries that the UK sends foreign aid to as "bongo bongo land". From the BBC News website:

"How we can possibly be giving £1bn a month, when we're in this sort of debt, to Bongo Bongo Land is completely beyond me. To buy Ray-Ban sunglasses, apartments in Paris, Ferraris and all the rest of it that goes with most of the foreign aid. F18s for Pakistan. We need a new squadron of F18s. Who's got the squadrons? Pakistan, where we send the money."

Do you think this is offensive?

Discuss.

Ahh UKIP, the party that is the equivalent of your racist grandad who is starting to lose it and so keeps banging on about the same things over and over again,

UKIP are worse than the likes of the EDL and BNP because they offer a veneer of respectability to overtly racist viewpoints.

We have a couple of UKIP supporters over here. Maybe they could come over and explain us how this is not racist at all.

I'm Pakistani, I don't know what "bongo bongo" means though, so I'm not offended because of ignorance I guess.

I wouldn't send foreign aid to the place that thing came from either

the guy has no clue what foriegn "aid" is
UK foriegn aid is just gift vouchers to buy UK goods - ie. arms
its not like they write a blank cheque and say go nuts
its conditional credit only to be used to buy goods from uk corporations

so foriegn aid actually helps the economy

The Tories hardly need to hysterically smear UKIP, UKIP do it well enough themselves.

That said "Bongo Bongo Land" is just an amusingly infantile expression.

On a serious note however, some of our foreign aid allocations are rididulous. We send millions a year to India when they have a space program

Especially after even UKIP has forced members out of the alliance it has with other Euroskeptic MEPs from other countries for using those exact words, saying they were racist.

On a serious note however, some of our foreign aid allocations are rididulous. We send millions a year to India when they have a space program

Most of those sorts of aid allocations are linked to development deals for British businesses - they're effectively corporate bribes.

Which isn't morally great of us, but it must be said cancelling them might not actually be great for us financially.

I haven't heard Bongo-Bongo land for years, does the fucker still call places by their imperial names?

It should remain as a joke in the Tory atlas of the world.

BONGOBONGOLAND last night insisted it has never received a penny in international aid. The country’s president spoke out after UKIP MEP Godfrey Bloom claimed all of Britain’s £11bn aid budget was being sent to the small west African nation.

President Brian Inkatwe said: “We get by on our own. I think it’s because no-one actually believes we exist.

“I have written to the UN on several occasions asking them if they could give us advice on starting a rural banking scheme, but every time they write back and tell me that the phrase ‘Bongobongoland’ is horribly racist and that I should stop wasting their time.

“Some aid would be nice as our economy has suffered since Chinese factories started pumping out cut price bongos.”

Bongobongoland sits between Liberia and the Ivory Coast and was a British colony until 1959. When it was granted independence everyone in Britain assumed the news reports referred to the entire African continent.

President Inkatwe added: “Our neighbours in Liberia receive some aid money and as far as I can tell most of it does actually get spent on making people’s lives just a tiny bit better. Not as good as yours or Godfrey Bloom’s obviously, but just not horrible all the time.

“No doubt some of it gets siphoned off and spent on fancy sunglasses, but people are shits wherever you go.

“Except Britain of course. Everyone in Britain is just fucking brilliant.”

Sounds like something a Tea Party congressman would say. I'm not sure whether I'm relieved or saddened that stupidity isn't a US politician exclusive.

lets be honest here
white folks will never get over the fact that brown people have a better sense of rhythm than they do
they just cant let it go

let it go already

I am more offended that he thinks this will "win him more votes on the North", as if we are all dodgy old racists as well.

Get fucked you cunt, most of the people who agree with you live in estates in Surrey
or the Palace

I'll call Beijing by whatever they call their crispy duck at The Golden Star at the end of my road. Peking it is! Actually, it's Pkin right now because half the letters are missing from the board. Pkin, the capital of China! It's a shame they don't do classic Ceylon noodles.

I'm not a UKIP voter (although the town where I live has a lot of UKIP seats these days), but i don't see how tha't's offensive. He's just using a catch all, made up name for foreign countries.

But then i don't see how most things idiots say can be classed as offensive. Maybe I'm just hard to offend.

To me they are just the "High street chic" version of EDL / BNP or Golden Dawn even.

yeah i like to think of them as the bnp/edl for the middle classes

whereas the bnp talks from the farleft on economics to appeal to disaffected working classes, ukip talks from the far right to get middle classes excited. where the bnp and edl are more overtly violent and discriminatory, ukip couches their similarly exclusive vision for britain in largely more socially correct language or the jokey style of clarkson and co, as seen here, that's more palatable for a middle class audience who worry what the neighbours think.
