Where's the best place to start with the collected editions?

You can start with Guardians of the Galaxy (2008) Volume 1 by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. The entire run is gold.

Here it is on Amazon but you can find it cheap digitally:

GotG is part of a larger Cosmic arc from a few years ago, if you want to read all about that you can start with Annihilation. The GotG are not formed yet and the main protagonist is Nova, but it also features some of the future Guardians and helps to explain why they later become heroes/join the team.

If you want to read about the origins of the team but don't care about what came before, you may want to start with Annihilation: Conquest (the sequel story to Annihilation):

But if all that is confusing to you, like I said, you can just start with volume 1 of the 2008 series and pretty much go from there. (Though both Annihilation stories are fantastic)

When people keep saying Gunn, I keep thinking of Gunn from Angel.

...Yeah, this whole time..I just imagine Gunn being there saying "Ok guys we're going to shoot the next scene!".

...I'm damned excited for the movie though. So happy for Vin Diesel, he gets to nerd out.

YES!!!!!!!!

Dammit where is RICHIE?!

There's a chance he will appear in this movie but it isn't yet confirmed that will happen.

If GotG is a success it is practically a guarantee that Nova will be the next Cosmic property to hit the big screen, likely in Phase 3.

This is pure speculation but I think the plan is likely two cosmic movies in Phase 3:

Nova (Annihilation adaptation)
Guardians of the Galaxy 2 (Annihilation: Conquest adaptation)

The setup with Thanos and Ultron from GotG 1 and Avengers 2 makes this almost too apparent, at least imo.

This could just be my wishful thinking but I really do believe this is the direction they are heading with this.

Whoa - this thread is full of amazing stuff - actual high-quality set pics, and the characters will no doubt look even better on-screen still, and Rocket Raccoon looking like he should.

A movie with characters that aren't the top well-known ones in Marvel getting this kind of treatment is great to see.

Are there any chances of astrovik being in this, or is he locked down with fox?

Yup. Ring in Avengers 3 with Thanos facing off against the Avengers (Cap, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Iron Man, Black Widow, Ant Man, Black Panther? Doctor Strange? Ms. Marvel?) and Nova/Guardians of the Galaxy. It prints money.

I imagine since both versions debuted in and stayed mainly in non x-men books marvel owns them.

but that mutant clause covers all mutants. look at what theyre doing with the maximoffs. if astrovik is somehow free of all that, that would be nice.

Man, EMH did the Guardians so fucking well. They got Master Chief to voice Star Lord! They had the best Rocket Raccoon voice! They had Adam Warlock! They were chasing down Michael Korvac, for fuck's sake! But nooooooo, it had to be cancelled.

brb gonna vomit everywhere

Loeb. It's always Jeph fucking Loeb.

Yeah but they are not defined by it. Justice got his powers by his future version messing wtih him, his future version got powers by going crazy and sleeping for thousands of years. You wouldn't even have to mention mutant in their origins.

By building their cinematic universe so well, Marvel have earned the ability to make a movie out of a quirky property such as this.

Good on them.

If people were sick of superhero movies before...imagine if GOTG is succcessful in any way.

If this makes a healthy profit, the flood gates will be open so far wide it'll cause a goddamn tsunami.

Its amazing that Marvel was looking into bankruptcy abyss and now they have their own film studio producing films grossing 200-300-400 million and 1 billion. Crazy.

Hopefully it'll do well just so DC can start saying "fuck it" and make a Booster Gold movie or something.

Quite true. I hope they announce the astroviks just so that hack Millar can scramble to put justice in somehow.

If GOTG does well, watch DC say "fuck it" and sign movie deals with Disney and Marvel studios. :)
I'm honestly wondering why DC isn't poaching some of the brighter minds within Marvel. You see this happen in the videogame industry all the time.

Because the higher ups are scaring them off to begin with.

I hope that after guardians comes out people won't scoff at ant man. I find it hard to except one and laugh at the other.

Surprised this wasn't announced via twitter today via #beatingWhedon

millar wouldnt know what to do with the starjammers. that, and the options would be incredibly limited cosmic wise

At least it's not dark, gritty, and taking itself too seriously like fucking Superman and Spider-Man. This seems like a movie that knows exactly what it wants to be and is and is not ashamed of it. That's great.

Yea the floodgates would definitely swing open if this knocks it out of the park in the BO.

Its sad in a way that this hit the silver screen before a wonder woman film did.

DC pls

Guardians is going to absolutely dunk on DC/WB's Green Lantern movie for showing how to make a crazy concept like this work.

brb gonna vomit everywhere

Ah come on, Michael Clarke Duncan as Groot was awesome! Sam really sours an otherwise good episode though :/

Speaking of flood gates and Fox, I can see them fast tracking a Silver Surfer/Galactus movie (not saying it'll be good but I can see them doing it)
