ROCKnROOOOOOOLLLLLLLL!!!!!!

I have been hyping this up to my wife for some time, and she was indifferent. But once she saw the part from that GIF, she was sold. Her words: "You weren't lying. A raccoon with a big gun is pretty cool."

whoa didnt know it was already filming and gifs were out in the wild. looks amazing :D im hyped

im betting marvel has a small bit in a trailer or commercial with the avengers talking and robert downey says "i wonder if there are heroes out there" and points to the galaxy.

Marvel Unlimited has them all by the way.

I'm trying to read them following that image of modern cosmic marvel and really, it's not catching me at all. It's hard to get into it when these are all preestablished characters that I have no idea anything about. Half the shit being talked about means nothing to me since I'm not familiar with the old material. Most of the characters have no build up as they are long established before hand so it's hard to also care about anyone in these series. Reading it and I'm like.... whose this Drax? Starlord? What's that, where did he come from, hes suddenly here and apparently there is some kind of past about it. This guy Ronan seems cool.... why is he fighting these dudes? OMG Gamora!.... why is she special?

Outside of the basics of Thanos and Galactus I've been lost. I understand the plot and whats going on, but again it's hard to just jump in at this point or really care for some of these people. Going through Conquest and I still don't know what real powers lot of these characters have relative to each other.

So in this adaptation, do Star Lord and Rocket Racoon know each other before the guardians are formed?

In the original comic book, apparently Rocket was involved in a war where he first meets Star Lord. I wonder if we will see any of it?

Marvel is going to have to do some crazy marketing, and/or find a way to introduce GotG in other MCU movies because they are C-tier superheroes, at best.

I'm going to watch it, but I don't have hopes of the movie performing good at the BO.

it looks fun. genre will finally get a return to form in 2014. it's been mixed since TDK, not much quality out there.

Fixed for truth.

These threads are worth it just to see how much Marvel's success makes both of you miserable. :)

I really think this movie is going to underperform.

I concur. This series and these characters aren't particularly popular even among the comic book crowd (I should know, I'm a card-carrying member). The books don't sell particularly well, and they are a lot less relatable than, say, the Avengers.

Disney will market it like crazy, but I don't think it's going to blow up.

All of these guys are D-list obscurities from years ago. Hardly anyone knows who they were or what makes them special; you get that from just reading the stories and anything important is explained along the way.

You don't need to be familiar with the older material to enjoy because very few readers are familiar with the old stuff. "Just jump in" is what it's all about.

This won't bomb. All they need to do is draw a link to the Avengers and butts will be seated. From their, word of mouth will take care of things as long as it's decent.

Very few people knew who Iron Man was prior to the first film. Similar situation, but this movie has the now huge Marvel brand backing it.

That's not even remotely true or a valid comparison. Iron Man was extremely popular among comic fans. Hell, my wife doesn't read super hero comics and she knew who he was.

I asked her if she had heard of Rocket Raccoon and she looked at me like I was crazy. I showed her a picture of him and she said, "Ummm, that's ridiculous." That wasn't the movie version (which looks pretty sweet) so I'll have to try that test on her next.

One person, but she's definitely in the market place Marvel targets. She loves all the other Marvel films so far, particularly Thor and the Avengers.

Iron Man not only had his own cartoon, but he also guest-starred in other superhero cartoons. He also had plenty of merchandising. He was no Superman but he was far from obscure.

He also wasn't a billion-dollar tentpole franchise either.

The Iron Man 3 after credit scene should been the rumored Stark heading into space due to a signal about the GOTG instead we got a pointless recap scene.

I'm pretty sure Thor: The Dark World will connect with GOTG since
Benico del Toro will make a cameo appearance as the Collector.

i remember gaf back then: "its a c-tier superhero! nobody cares about him! its going to bomb!"...

i dont think guardians is going to bomb but its also not going to be a huge hit that makes 600+ million dollars WW.

Funny that you say this b/c the roles have been reversed since Iron Man 1 came out.

A franchise making less than a billion dollars doesn't make it obscure. Most people of my generation in America know who The Crow is even though the IP is far from being a billion dollar franchise.

How are the roles reversed? Superman is still a huge IP.
