Nvidia Shield Thread

So I called my ISP and we changed some router settings, but I am still getting interference because all their routers are 2.4, and there is 4 more around my house.

So I will go out and buy a new router that has 5.0 frequency. It sucks that I have to pour more money into this just to stream games, but I am already 300$ deep so I can't quit now.

On the plus side, the Android side is working out better than I expected. I only had iOS devices, so this is new.

The device is really awesome, dispite my network issues.

You may want to grab WiFi-Analyzer from the Play Store and get a visual of the channels in use around you and set your router to use a channel that isn't being used/overloaded.

A week with Shield, I really like this damn handheld so much, my "comfy bed" PC gaming experience is about smaller games, like Rogue legacy and first person shooters and it's amazing how long this thing last while steaming PC games it's like forever, I'm used to Vita and 3DS sad 3 to 4 hours but this thing just keep going like the Duracell bunny.

that for streaming I still need to test native android games (any recommended ones from Google Play?) and emulators on Shield.
How does the hardware compare to the Vita? BTW try Real Racing 3 (free to play),Dead Trigger (free 2 play),Dead Space,Horn and Shadowgun.

In terms of hardware, its probably better. The ipad 4 had similar, newer and faster hardware than the vita and the shield seems to be even faster than the ipad 4

That much I know but I mean the look and feel of the device in person.

Really high quality build, it's a tank(seriously) nothing here feel cheap unlike all other clamshell handheld this do not look cheap or flimsy,Sticks are big, buttons are console like, loud speakers, even the screen shell is solid, you know how the 3DS top screen feel like it want to break if you hold it or open it, it's not like this here, it's a surprise to me because Nvidia 3D Vision glasses and sensor were complete trash, but this thing is like the Alienware x51 of handhelds.

Android games:
Dead Trigger
GTA: Vice City
Riptide GP 2
Real Boxing

Emulators:
Drastic
RetroArch
SuperN64
PPSSPP(performance is a work in progress, but it's getting there)

Then you have Apps like Pandora, Netflix, Plex, TuneIn Radio, and others.

So much stuff in the play store.

huh, I forgot about GTA, I need to buy that and try it.

Drastic work like dream so far (games I tested), I think Shield is the perfect emulator handheld, PPSSPP will have a Shield optimized version soon iirc, I'll wait for it.

I love this handheld: emulation, android gaming, PC streaming. Solid build and yes the battery life is pretty decent too. Android gaming is hit and miss, for full gameplay experiences Max Payne, GTA, and Bards Tale are good. I also have The Conduit and Shadow gun and like both of those. Seems like the Shield store hasn't added any new games since launch. Hoping for more.

I hope Nvidia keep supporting and improving this, and not just forget about it like 3D vision.

Makes sense. I find it funny how people harshly trashed it without even having any experience using it.
.

it's really sad( we even have people attacking Amazon unannounced system already) Shield was clearly not a traditional handheld and do stuff that Vita and 3DS don't do, it's a different and niche market completely and audience but it got attacked, that normal thing in the internet I guess.

I think the device is rather cool and the PC streaming interests me, but without an nVidia graphics card (I'm an AMD guy) then this thing is kind of useless to me

Sadly the streaming part is Kepler hardware based but maybe AMD can make it work somehow in the future? dunno but it'll be great if they can.

So I ordered a Shield then and I really want to know is it possible to stream a game from PC to shield and do other things at the same time like watching a film through the PC while the other half is playing?

I agree, the first half of this thread is negative post upon negative post. With people who most likely never picked one up and played with it. I really like this device. It is a niche product but for PC streaming, android gaming, and emulation it's a nice package. I like the feel of the dual analog sticks as well. The screen is nice, clear, and crisp as is the audio. Honestly needs more games that take advantage of the controller but that's up to the developers, not nvidia.

This pretty much sums it up. I have had it for three days now, and I am overall impressed. Good build quality, nice controller feel, decent screen and battery life. The audio is worth acknowledging as well. I kind of got use to the weight, I don't find it bad after extended use. Streaming is really excellent; no noticeable lag with my set up. I was just play Fez on my living room TV, outputting through HDMI; it worked really well. I hope more current games include controller support. This thing really has the potential to act as a console...haven't tried it myself, but there is the ability to connect other controllers.

Emulation needs a bit of improvement, the current solutions are not perfect across the board. But hopefully the current Android apps are updated to iron the issues out.

My Streaming Setup: i5 2500k, GTX 760, 8 GB Ram, Netgear R6100 router

On a side note, this seems like the ultimate thing for that updated Android version of Final Fantasy Tactics, whenever they decide to release it in US...

I managed to get DMC to work once.

My PC is now wired to my router, which is 4 feet away from me, and I am still getting interference.

There is nothing that I haven't tried. I even turned off my Wifi card on my PC to avoid interference. Changing to another wifi channel where I am alone did not work either.

The time I spent bashing my head against this thing is incredible.

This is really dissapointing, because the one time I got it to work it was awesome.

The Digital Foundry review has kinda killed the hype for me:

"With a 100ms input latency and a 720p30 update, PC game streaming on Shield is remarkably similar to the current-gen console gaming experience."

Is not bad, but not great either. Fairly behind Wii U's streaming solution, if it weren't for the range and host device/library options. Is still a compelling device, but I this made the wait for a v2.0 easier.

"In terms of image quality, the GeForce/Shield hook-up isn't bad at all. We seem to be dealing with a 6-7mbps image transmitted at native 720p, and while it's safe to say that image quality isn't as pristine as, say, the Wii U GamePad, the overall effect is still pretty decent, with only occasional scenes causing the GTX h.264 hardware encoder any real issues."

What?!?

I drilled a hole in my floor to bring my dual band router ty my living room so I can plug it into my computer with a wire, and 5Ghz to my Shield.

I am litterally 2 feet away from the only 5ghz frequency in my neighbourhood, and there is still interference.

Maybe something is wrong with my card? A few months old 780 with beta drivers should be fine...

Why the surprise? Nintendo really went to town on that feature. I remember Eurogamer saying it was streaming at over 30mbps. It's hard to tell it's a stream with the majority of games on it.

This shit is broken for me, the PC keeps connecting and deconnecting.

Edit:

I fucking give up.

I spend 150$ on a new router, drilled a hole in my floor and wasted hours for nothing.

I will wait until it's officially out of Beta, because beta testing this feature for Nvidia is driving me mad.

Can this technically be fixed with software update?
This is a massive omission, I can't believe no one else mentioned this...

Perhaps because we couldn't care less if it's 30 fps. Dude, you get to play Steam games why lying down in your bed. Who gives a shit if it's 30 or 60 fps!

Sucks that you're having issues Kurdel :/. No idea why though as I've been streaming sans problems. Hopefully you figure it out or some kind soul can give you some info.

I couldn't bother continuing my oddworld stranger's wrath playtrough on the vita because of the framerate compared to the pc or ps3 versions. One of the reason I got really excited for the device was that I thought the pc could force games to run downsampled and at 60fps easily. Playing hotline miami or super stardust at 60fps is an amazing experience on a handheld device. I don't expect to play a cod game on it but a smooth borderlands 2 or tomb raider made me dream so much :(

I think he's confused because it mentioned how it steams to the Shield at native 720p, but doesn't look as good as the stream to the Wii U Gamepad, whose screen is 480p.

But, if DF is to be trusted, we are talking about up to 40mbps for a 480p @60fps image vs 6-7mbp for a 720p image @30fps.

Oh ok, I get you.

You are right I was confused. Thanks.

edit:oppssss I am still confused. :S

edit 2: So 40mbps for a 480p @60fps image is better than 6-7mbp for a 720p image @30fps?

The resolution will still be lower, but any advantage that brings will be more than offset by the lack of clarity in the graphics due to the artifacting. It seems there's not enough bandwidth to get an image as good as the one the Wii U can produce. This is probably why they went with 30fps too.

The difference is that Nintendo used a custom wifi chip within the Wii U itself specifically for sending information to the gamepad. Nvidia are just relying on peoples existing modems. That also explains the massive lag difference. The Wii U gamepad refreshes quicker than a lot of LCD's.

I did, I am alone on the channel, but I am still getting interference.

I will be moving my PC downstairs and closer to my brand new router.

Yes, I live alone too and I still get interference. I was surprised when I used wifi analyzer my PS3 was on the same channel so I unplugged it. It also picked up my neighbors wifi but they're on different channels. I also think its on a case by case basis when it comes to games. Alan Wake has worked really really well, Dungeon Siege 3 lags all the time and drops out constantly. Sure there PC streaming will be improved upon but it's a little unstable now. But when it works it works well.

Also, my router is in between my PC and my bedroom where I primarily use the shield. About 10 feet from router to PC and 20 from router to bed.

Still waiting on my order from Nvidia. Placed the order Saturday with over night. Not that I expected to ship today. Plus for all I know they might not have them in stock. I'll wait till Wed before I get worried.

That was my first concern, that if it's: Shield ----> Pc-----> Router, that the PC would be in the way.

But seeing my Shield is now on 5Ghtz, that nullified that hypthethis...

I am going to wait until Nvidia releases more drivers, because I really ran through every single possibility on my side.

Only possibility left is that my GTX 780 or Shield are somehow defective, or drivers aren't final so there is an obscure incomptability.

I also wanted to thank everyone who tried to help me out here. I know the Nvidia forums are a wasteland compared to Gaf, and I appreciate all your help :) !!

I was pretty seriously considering picking up a Shield until hearing this and the network issues people have been having. I kind of assumed that it would be at least on par with Nintendo's streaming, if not a solid 1080p as well. I didn't invest in expensive hardware so I could be limited to current gen IQ and frame rate.

I don't own any of the devices but from the little time I've spent with the Wii U, you can hardly see any defects with the gamepad's stream. The Shield on the other hand seems to have visible artificats/macroblocking if you look for it. Plus there's latency.

I was honestly expecting the Shield to at least stream at the same framerate as what your PC is doing because stuff like onlive has been doing it fine AND over the internet

I think it's a stretch to say that Onlive has been doing that 'fine'. There's too much lag for many games to be playable and the IQ is horrendous. It was designed for 1mbps connections.

Anyone a fan of Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the PC? Try this:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.n0n3m4.rtcw4a

Return to Castle Wolfenstein! Under settings, disable the on screen keys overlays. Everything is pre-mapped once the game starts. Uses the R1/L1 buttons not the R2/L2 triggers, but the full game works.

Use the right analog stick as a mouse cursor and select with R1.

You will need to install the folder called "Main" to a space on internal or external storage. e.g. I installed to my SDCARD1 so the path is /storage/SDCARD1/rtcw4a. Here, copy the full or demo version of the game files under the Main folder needed to launch and play the game.

Friggin Enjoy!

You do know you have to update to the latest drivers on your PC AND update the shield itself. That I didn't know but the shield that gets shipped isn't the latest version that makes PC streaming possible. Have you tried different games? I know the frustration, I bought a new graphics card and found out that my power supply wouldn't accommodate it so had to buy a new one of those too. 200 dollars after spending money on the shield. I don't know what your problem is, my CPU and router aren't as good as yours and mine seems to stream. Sometimes....just had to reboot the PC again.

A lot of people can already do that if they just hook their PC up to a TV.

The difference between 30 and 60fps is huge. It sounds like with the current implementation of the Shield, people could get pretty much the same quality with an Android phone, gameklip and a PS3 controller. If they're going to charge so much for shield it should outperform the competition considerably.

Love my Shield. Streams games really well all over my house (using a couple Ubiquiti Unifi APs), high end Android games are finally playable (framerate and controls), and the emulators I've tried work absolutely great. Lots of non "approved" games stream just fine as well.

I love how I just ordered this, and now people are talking about low IP, 30FPS etc. Obviously it's my own fault for not doing more research before pulling the trigger. THAT said, I'm not angry or writing it off. I guess I'll see for myself tomorrow if the quality is satisfactory.

My hope is that, the 720p 30FPS won't look as bad on a handheld screen compared to a 60 inch big screen TV.

The resolution isn't really a big issue but frame rate on mobile is just as noticeable as it is on a big screen.

This was my problem, too...make sure you update your SHIELD firmware! Fixes all. And actually - NVIDIA's online help staff (in chat) was very helpful.

What's the big deal about streaming PC games, anyways? Isn't it more or less just an extended mini screen?

If you don't see the point, then it's probably not for you. It would stop me having to be in my computer room, which is handy as that seems to annoy my girlfriend...

My wife would not be happy with a 40ft HDMI cable strung across the upstairs, and definitely not a 100ft one running to my downstairs.

I know there are plenty of people who complain about 30fps, but so far it has not been an issue, and I'm sure the Shield owners in this thread would agree.

What a difference it makes being on the couch together vs being in a separate room :)
