Steam Link + NVIDIA Shield TV Pro turned my PC into a pretty cool console

So, I recently moved to a new apartment. I've been gaming on consoles and PC since forever, but always in my couch with a controller. Previously I kept my PC in my living room but I really didn't want to do that in my new apartment which is bigger, so now I keep it in another room. PC gaming wasn't a priority for me but then I got an urge to try Oblivion Remastered. I've never played Oblivion so it was finally time!

I then realized that it should be possible to stream my games via Steam Link over the network to my NVIDIA Shield TV Pro that's connected to my TV. So I bought an 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Wireless Controller and connected it to the Shield. The latency was pretty bad using bluetooth though, but the 2.4GHz dongle works just fine with the Shield and that improved the latency problem a lot. I'm very impressed by this controller, it's pretty amazing!

I have to say I'm amazed over how well it works. Big Picture Mode is amazing and everything just feels so seamless - super impressive. So right now my PC is only used for gaming and as a Plex movie server and it stays in the other room, always turned on. Whenever me or my girlfriend wants to play Oblivion, we start it via the Steam Link app on the Shield and can use the controller for everything.

Sure, that in itself is nothing new or special compared to just hooking up the PC to the TV via HDMI or whatever, but the whole experience just feels different - it's turned into a "console" now. Super sleek! We don't play any games that require super quick reflexes, no FPS games etc. Mostly third person RPGs and Oblivion Remastered works great this way and whatever latency there is, it's not noticeable to us, at least.

I have to say this has reignited my interest in PC gaming, especially now since neither Sony or Microsoft care about consoles anymore and are pretty much putting everything on Steam eventually. I've seen a lot of complaints about Oblivion Remastered here but I'm having so much fun with this game! To me it's not as fun or immersive as Skyrim but it scratches the same itch and I can definitely see why this game is so loved.

Over and out.

It's good that your Shield TV isn't coughing when streaming, mine (regular, 2019 revision, shaped like a toblerone) desperately needs an update

Yeah mine isn't exactly blazingly fast when navigation but it handles 4k HDR streaming perfectly fine and also a rock solid 60 fps when streaming games actually.

I was just visiting an old friend last weekend and I helped him set up steam link via his appletv. It works nicely. No-go for competitive games, but for everything else it's fine.

Yeah exactly. We don't have any need or interest when it comes to HFR or competitive gaming so it's nice. Very console-y 😄

I still use a raspberry pi for my client, works fine for the mostly story / mystery games that I play with wife on the bedroom TV. Latency is basically not a big deal for any of the genres we play over the link.

I use a tiny desktop like this for steam link and emulation. It's cheaper than a shield or raspberry pi, and i dont have to deal with cases or adapters. If it wasnt for steam link i wouldnt be gaming on pc as much, it's a godsend. If you want to reduce latency of course use ethernet. Also netgear routers add latency to your network. I did some testing and pings were averaging around 8ms over ethernet from my desktop to my htpc. Switched out my netgear switch and router to tp link and my average ping is now under 1ms between the two desktops. It made a huge difference. Playing Another Crab's Treasure and racing games is much better after switching network brands.

Looks like a great option, but is it really cheaper than a RPI? You can find the solid Pi4 version for maybe $50 and then it's not too much more for the enclosure and adapters etc to have it fully set up.
You can buy older desktops with a 5th or 6th gen i5 on ebay for around $50 all day long. I have this one and can emulate ps2/gc at 1x resolution. They're perfect as a htpc.
