That idea came up during a discussion on feedback in this thread and its an awesome idea that hopefully gets picked up by you guys. A problem even this thread seems to show, is that people still likely avoid the very unknown titles that might not have all that great looking production values. The idea someone came up with was dedicating a day to playing any of the games from the past threads that you havent played yet and post your impressions about it, be it good or bad. That way we wont forget the games from the past threads completely and it allows us to check on some other games :)

Here are the past thread links:
I recommend checking for the games in the OP rankings of the april, may, june and july threads and checking out a game high up on the ranking that you didnt get to yet, since its likely that those are among the better ones anyway.

Finaly played Chess the Gathering. Very fun, simple mecanics, very simple graphic, still need to try it at 4 players but definitly a good experience.

Make me want to return to programming for fun.

Pretty great Roguelike. I had about 2 weeks disapear to it :(
Yeah it sounds like it has a lot of depth. From what I understand, it's not exactly turn based? Enemies move when you move or something like that?

Doing a trade on Reddt and that's one of the potential games, so I was interested

It is a roguelike and turn based. Get it, its one of the best traditional roguelike games that came out recently.

Saturated Dreamers - The game has been in development for almost six years and it's finally coming this year. As a fan of Stanisław Lem's works, I love the whole idea of befriending creatures inhabiting the surface of a sentient water planet, not to mention how lovely the game looks.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=-lzDWabjYnY

Saturated Dreamers is an open-world adventure game set on Lake, a sentient ice planet that holds many secrets from expeditionists Mercedes and co. Players assume control of the Leda, a ship equipped with unique gadgets that can be used to solve puzzles, befriend creatures, and purify Lake's waters.

Features.

  • Exploration, Discovery, Experimentation: Explore an open-world and discover the events of the expedition in a branching story, experiment in order to solve puzzles and befriend creatures.
  • Friendship: There are many types of creatures with different behaviors, some hostile or obtrusive. Befriending creatures makes creatures friendly, and sometimes even helpful to your mission.
  • Leda: Leda is the ship that the player controls throughout the game. Various modules for the Leda are scattered around the world that players can find in order to access new abilities which can then be used to access new areas, fight or befriend creatures, and serve other playabilities.
  • Story: Saturated Dreamers features a non-linear story written by Jeanne Thornton, who also wrote Immortal Defense and The Dream of Doctor Bantam.
  • Soundtrack: Three hours of original music by Long Dao and Walter Eres as well as additional tracks provided by New York based psychedelic rock band Crazy Mary.
  • Developers of Immortal Defense: Game design and programming by Paul Eres.

Anybody checking out that new early access game Betrayer?

Open world survival horror set in the 17th century...looks super interesting.

*edit* Nobody eh? Fiiiiiiiiiine, I'll dive in.

Don't forget to share your impressions.

Yes, please share impressions

And has anyone played Legend of Dungeon? Love the pixel art style and 2.5D view in the trailer

Really liking what I'm seeing from Betrayer.

The game immediately starts you off on a beach after an apparent shipwreck. No fancy cutscenes or even text introducing you to the character. You're given a bow and taught basic things like what your use and melee attack keys are and that crouching helps you sneak around. You can loot treasure chests and crates for gold and enemies drop weapons that you can use or sell. The death penalty in this game is exactly like Dark Souls, when you die you drop all of your gold and have to go back and pick it up.

The game is a little light on the graphics options right now, all you have is the ability to set it it Low, Med, and High. Kinda strange for a PC exclusive game, but it is still in alpha. Some people have been complaining about eye strain due to the Black and White art style, but that wasn't really a problem for me.

So yeah, these are just my thoughts after about 30 minutes.

Souvenir
- Love the art style and visual storytelling. Very surreal landscape but also quite relaxing to explore

Fragment
- All the mouse sensitivity settings were way too loose for me, so I didn't play that much. But I did get the sense that it would be a fun stealth game and the assimilation effect is very satisfying.

Chasm (demo)
- Great game, now that's I've played the demo, very excited it got Greenlit. Lovely pixel graphics, smooth controls and animations

Out of the three, I enjoyed Souvenir the most.

TO THE MOON - (PC) $9.99

Picked this one up during the Summer Sale based on everyone's reactions. I knew going in that it was, to a degree a digital novel which was great. Unfortunately the story didn't grab me nearly the same way it did others. It may be because my wife's grandmother is in the hospital currently, it may be the shift in tone at times with the jokes, it might be the RPG interface. Who knows? Either way, its impressive for what it does, but I actually had wished it was shorter at times. Maybe playing it in one sitting would improve my reaction. The whole time I felt I was replaying Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind which might have impacted things as well.

That having been said, they nailed the ending perfectly, setting up things for the sequel, even if it does feel like the ending of Inception.

I loved the "experimental" nature of the experience, the way things felt different but connected by the theme. Lots of atmosphere in a short time. Games hit you quick, and don't overstay their welcome if that makes sense. It also helps that I love the SCP site and being a videogame version of it.. well :) It's like finding out Junji Ito has a videogame.

Dusty's Revenge just released on OnLive as part of their $9.99 a month PlayPack. You can also trial the game for 30 minutes there. Tried it out, pretty fun game. I find the lack of controller support disappointing though and hope it's just an oversight on OnLive's part. They've done that a couple of times where they'd release a game and then controller support pops up a day or two later.

Try the 30 minute trial here.

Just listened to the latest Meta Vedetta episode and as always it was very good with amazing tracks choosen, with my personal favorite being the one from Risk of Raim. I'm also curious to see more about Cosmic DJ.

Thanks for the feedback! I think the Risk of Rain OST is through and through incredible. If you get a second check out the whole thing by Chris Christodoulou:

It is intense, and insanely unique.

More Betrayer thoughts...

This game has a dark parallel world much like silent hill, here you can clear corruption and find troubled souls that are stuck in this realm for one reason or another. Anyways, as I was exploring the world I stumbled upon the body of this dude's dead wife...along with his pistol. Now all I need is a motive and that sonofabitch is going down...to ghost jail.

The atmosphere in this game is amazing, there is no music just ambient noises. Being in the dark world when the wind decides to blow and rustle the trees can be really spooky.

Also, on a related gaming note, a recent Game Music Bundle was just released that I think deserves some more attention:

"6 full soundtracks for just $1! That's over 160 tracks of beautiful game music for a single buck!

Plus, if you're willing to dig deeper into the founding fathers($10), you can shell out a Hamilton for a ton more content - including Fez remix albums Side F and Side Z, Monaco: The Gentlemen's Private Collection, and the full soundtracks to The Forge, Hero of Many, Marble Time, Super Panda Adventures, Anodyne (plus the Anodyne Remix Album), Frog Fractions, Little Inferno, Me and My Dinosaur 2, and Drox Operative!"

...This is a sick deal!

How are the visual differences between the normal world and the dark world?

That is pretty cool, thanks for posting.

Betrayal is in such a weird place right now. In its current alpha state, it reminds me a lot of The Void, in that an almost intentional rawness to the mechanics is what primarily contributes to the atmosphere. Enemies, ostensibly Spanish conquistadors patrol around a 10m grid, walk a few metres to the right, a few metres the left, turn south for a while.

f you sprint around they'll hear you from half a kilometer or more away, charging directly at you from behind hills, cliffs and through visually impenetrable forest. Conversely if you're crouched, you basically walk into them before they'll figure out you're there. You die when a charging foe gets to within about a metre of you, while ranged guys strafe around and can't really hit you.

Your primary weapon, the bow, currently has: no dropoff, reticle accuracy, almost instant travel time and no aiming sway, even while moving. All of these oddities, combined with the simple and arbitrary feeling enemy behaviour make the game feel incredibly dreamlike to me. The colonial setting doesn't feel at all realised yet and probably doesn't need to be, because the bizarre hostility of the atmosphere really draws you into the world. It's immediate, due to the lack of tutorials Phantom mentioned.

While the red particle effects surrounding enemies make them difficult to miss, the world's harsh lighting makes it very difficult to discern visually, especially in forests where shadows are abundant.

So even though the world does seem to be built out nicely, it can feel at times like a more traditional alpha, with enemies in the middle of great swathes of nothing, before much art is implemented, just because so much of the screen can be almost pure black any one time.

This almost minimalistic focus on the meaningful game elements, highlighted in red, gives the game a real austere feel when combined with the lack of UI and narrative feedback for what you're doing.

Like perhaps The Void or the current build of Sir You Are Being Hunted, there's a real power to the unfinished feel of the game's early state. I wonder how much of this feeling will translate into the final game. Really interesting. Sorry for the wall of text.

I would say that's worth it for FEZ alone,

I feel for the devs of Betrayer, good game or not, they dont derserve the constant complaining on the steam forums...

people moan that we get the same re-hashed ideas over and over, yet someone dares to make something different and they get slammed in the forums

Excellent thoughts, the game is certainly unique in its current state.

It's especially bad considering a lot of the people there are putting their 2 cents in when they haven't even played it.

As I said in the Steam thread, so much stupidity condensed in one place. It's tragicomic how they don't want to buy the game but want to give insights in how it should be. Of course they don't need to like the game, personally I'm not interested on Betrayer, but it doesn't give me a reason and tge rights to go on the forums shitting in the game.

I hope the devs don't get discouraged by these people.

Just going to try my luck:

Anyone have a copy of QUBE (Steam) or Project Zomboid (Desura) they're willing to trade?
Games I have to trade can be seen here, if interested. I'll trade any game, or any number of games, for either one or both of those games.

(Sorry, if trading requests aren't allowed here)

This game is a very hard platformer. The music and the art-style combine very well both being minimalist and creates a nice atmosphere. The levels are well designed and every new level brings some new challenges.

Also vote for it on Greenlit it's well worth.
That's My Trunks (or whatever his GAF screenname is) will be glad to know you liked it :)

One of these days I should probably actually try it, myself. I upvoted it on GL ages ago, and knew about its existence even earlier than that, but have never actually played it.

Having spent more time with Strata, I think now it's safe to commit to a statement I couldn't throw enough weight behind before: the game's difficulty curve is messed up.

There's a general trend upward simply because of the increased complexity of larger matrices, but within the sets and even within the level groups it's all over the map. Placing a level with an obvious pattern or lots of free spaces after one without is ill-considered; even though the easier level might have been fine as a transition toward a more difficult level, it comes off as filler after it. When a player feels like something is just filler, the entire game is cheapened.

Additionally, there may be a number of levels that are unnecessary just because of the "number of levels = size of matrix" gimmick, but it's tough to tell which actually need to be excised because what's there is disorganized. I find it tough to sit down and play more than a few puzzles in a row, which might be fine for a mobile game (...as befitting the developer's history) but is unsatisfying on PC.

Pushmo/Pullblox did a decent job of avoiding this. It had a number of levels which were redundant from a mechanical standpoint because their difficulty levels were basically equal. (You can see IntSys tacitly acknowledging this with Crashmo/Fallblox: about the same number of levels, but half of them are shunted off into alternate modes and the difficulty curve of the main game is considerably steeper.) But even though those levels may have been technically unnecessary, they didn't feel worthless because they were placed appropriately for the player's current level of progression. Visual and aural variance probably helped; something else Strata lacks.

I'm torn between a 2/5 and 3/5. It's cheap and it's got a good concept but then makes a bunch of errors. I'll figure out where it sits eventually.

Anyone in the Alpha for Full Mojo Rampage and have some impressions? It looks like my kind of game but $20 feels like a lot to drop without some impressions, especially since controls and feel/movement can really make or break this type of game.

A user came out and made a thread earlier in the week actually. It has just fallen off because the game was not out.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=651707

Feel free to post everything there!

Told you it would have been better to wait :p

I'll post some impressions when I'll grab the game eventually. Oh and it would help if you would tell the guy who created the thread to ask a mod to change the title to something with Sim/Simulation because currently the thread title is not attracting the ones who are interested in that kind of game.

Edit: And I'll also include it next month of course.

Can't say I'm in the alpha, but I did get initially excited to see your post because I thought it was a sequel to Bad Mojo. Looks like a potentially interesting game but I agree that $20 it perhaps too much in it current state to impulse buy it.
