New 3DS System Update (StreetPass Relay Feature)

Not true, I have my regular router and have an old router that's turned into a relay station. My 3ds is still getting the tags, even with my regular network still active on it.

I've had no success this way, and a few other people earlier in the thread reported the same thing. Sometimes a lot of this seems random, like the people who have a 3DS that just refuses to connect to a NZ.

Even trying to diagnose this is difficult because it seems everything is working fine. I've even tried multiple different MACs, GAF ones or otherwise from GBATemp.

It also appears others on GBATemp are having the same problems.
Are you checking the MAC addresses have actually changed. I had that problem where I would run machsift, get no errors and then check ipconfig and see the MAC was unchanged (or had reverted back to default). Sometimes I had to run the command on "Wireless Network Connection", sometimes "Wireless Network Connection 2" instead (they both share MAC). Also there were some MAC addresses which I could not change to at all (the main GBAtemp ones should be reliable though).

One thing I'm wondering is I'm often getting tags with no Streetpass Plaza data, or certain MAC addresses sometimes give no data at all, even though I'm sure they're being used more frequently than I could be reusing them. If we're supposed to be getting the data for the last people that had whatever games we have active, then that shouldn't be happening even if the previous person doesn't have their Streetpass Plaza active for Streetpass. Is it because people are using scripts and tagging with full plazas that it's giving a non-tag rather than any actual data for the next person do you think?
I wonder if it downloads the data first then uploads your data. Maybe people are shutting off connections too quickly and the latter step does not happen. Maybe also this explains my nonsensical no SM3DL tags.

When I run a batch tonight I'll keep a network activity tab open to see whats up.

I follow the Windows 8 instructions step-by-step, but when I start my Virtual Router, the following message appears:

Virtual wifi device not found!
Neither "Microsoft Hosted Network Virtual Adapter" or "Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter" were found.

I've also noticed that doing netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow , despite giving me the correct message "The hosted network mode has been set to allow" does not make a "Virtual Wifi Miniport" appear on my network connections.

Anyone would like to guess what might be causing this? Thanks.

Apologies for posting this again, but I'd really like in on the the fun :(

Are you running your command prompt as an administrator?

Yes, I am :(

Virtual Router Manager as well.

Here's my process.

Try using netsh after you use MacShift. Some people have their hostednetwork setting reset after using MacShift.

Quoting myself for the new page. I fear the other post would be lost at the bottom. Sorry.

Really hope someone here can help me with this.

I'm trying to set this up with the Windows 7 Virtual WiFI Miniport method, without Connectify/Virtual Router or other software like that. The 3DS connects to the virtual wifi with the correct ssid (attwifi), detects the Nintendo Zone, gets SpotPass, and can browse.

Using TMac or macshift, I can change the MAC address of my laptop's wifi card (a crappy Intel one, if that matters at all), but here's the problem: the Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter keeps its old MAC address no matter what I do. I've set my wired connection to be shared with this virtual connection, following the guides on this thread and on GBATemp, but I'm pretty much 100% sure that it is this "wrong" MAC address that the 3DS is seeing.

Is there anything I can do?

As a last desperation move, can someone please add this MAC address to their list to see if I can at least get one pass and know what's wrong? It's 00:23:14:A7:FC:11. Thanks a million to anyone that tries to help.

tried the 3ds w/o connection as well, it doesn't see my Droid, which is set up with 4E:53:50:4F:4F:46 and running without errors

i'll give it a couple tries more then i give up :/

Experienced this at my main train station home last night. I usually meet 2-3 people on my way home from work.

It looks like I met 7 people via relay at my station alone.

Does anyone have a DDWRT cron job to cycle through those?

I'm using automator on my MacBook, I really like to know if anybody already make the script for the router to cycle through all of the addresses.

Are the GAF addresses also using attwifi as the SSID?

Yep, since folks in GBAtemp were using attwifi as their universal SSID so it's better to keep with the same SSID to simplified the process.

Hey that's me :D (ko_Faust)

only got two passes while going through the neogaf MAC addresses but i will try them
later again.

Wifi Tethering works like a charm with my android :)

We met for like 3 times already!!
Oh btw the MAC addresses were still fresh at the moment you rolled so it often gave you zero result since there were no SP pool stored inside of it. Just wait for the other to seed their tag by connecting to all the addresses and it would be full of crowd :)

Remember that the Nintendo Zone icon flashing is only indicative of an AP in range with the SSID of attwifi or _The Cloud. It doesn't guarantee this to be working, sadly.

I was wondering, since the Windows 8 method isn't working for me, if I set up a virtual machine running Ubuntu would the Ubuntu method work?

ahh, so i don't have to be connected to it to get streetpasses?

You do but you do not need to run the Nintendo Zone app (which due to the fact launching disconnects you might make some zones refuse you due to you being already connected).

But the message pops up as soon as the SSID is seen (your 3DS might be too far away to actually make a connection).

Can we customize the built in MAC addresses stored in the script?

Not without access to the source code, since it's an .exe.

It looks like the author is kind enough to give it away to anyone who asks via PM. If anyone here shows interest, I may ask if he's okay with me modifying it for GAF's addresses, which should make our life easier.

My Dir-615 arrived today, DD-WRT installed straight from the web interface of the router and manually changing the mac address works a treat :*) none of the cron jobs seem to work for me though which is a pest but I won't complain too much!

ahh good thanks mate, at least i know something is working!

I've rotated through the GAF MACs and gotten plenty of tags. Has anyone gotten my Mii? It's a yellow shirt named Javier, with SNES hat.

Where in ipconfig does it show that? What command do I put in? My Wireless Network Connection is called "Wi-Fi". At any rate, I took a screenshot of what's what, maybe someone can look at this and diagnose what's off.

Local Area Connection* 11 is the virtual router. I have no idea what Local Area Connection* 9 is. Note that I ran the "netsh wlan show hostednetwork" command earlier than when the 3DS wasn't checking.

0-59/6 * * * * root ifconfig eth1 down && ifconfig eth1 hw ether 4E:47:41:46:30:3`/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1` && ifconfig eth1 up

its not my work, so i dont know how to add the first neogaf mac.

Change Local Area Connection* 11 to the MAC addresses used. Notice it has the attwifi SSID that the 3DS has connected to. That is the only MAC address you need to change (as it is the MAC address of the connected SSID that is sent to Nintendo) so put the others back to what they were. Ethernet should never need changing.

I'm connected at work again via Android using NeoGAF MAC Address. I street passed a dude in a Link costume, but nothing else. Does this mean I can only get one per MAC Address every few hours or does it mean just me and that Link Mii are the only two on?

Once per MAC every 8 hours or so. Like a real StreetPass really.

Okay that makes sense. So I need to keep rotating through

Hello guys, I get the following error while pressing the starting button in Virtual Router Manager

"hresult e_fail has been returned from a call to a com component"

Any ideas? Google didn't help me at all...

BTW I have a laptop with a wireless integrated card and a USB dongle thingy for Wi Fi (From an old computer) is it possible to use one to receive the router wireless signal and the other to act as the hot spot?

I'm working on adapting the Windows 7/8 method script for GAF's addresses, for now if you want you can also use the following:

GAFuser01 -- 00:26:5b:21:7e:29
GAFuser02 -- bc:14:01:74:f8:89

Not without access to the source code, since it's an .exe.

The OSX version kinda simpler, tho. Its basically an automator and we could change the macs which included in a separated file. I haven't check this windows version but from what I read the max version of this program is so overkill since it cycle through lots of macs. Lol

I think to rotate more than 10 macs per 1 run is not a good idea since how the way 3DS handle the pass. I noticed even when I rotated through 20 or more macs I only got 10 Mii's passed to my plaza. I wonder how I could get the other Mii's since I'm sure my 3DS always blinked before I spoof the macs manually.

That's why I always spoof 10 macs per 1 run (time frame between putting my 3DS to sleep then wake it up to let the Mii's passed) just to make sure I tagged all the Mii's.

Ah okay. Thanks, however every time I go to change it using Technitium MAC Address Changer, I get an error that says "Failed to change MAC Address. For wireless connections, set the first octet of MAC address as '02' adn try again." And I get this error with and without the "Use '02' as first octet of MAC address" checked D;

Edit: And new Theatrhytm seems to be my "I'm not getting any data" game...

Just for reference:

But they seem to be called different names on your set-up anyway but those were the one I needed to modify.

I also had problems getting Technitium to work so stuck with macshift.

hi guys, sorry to bother you. :p

I'm trying to make the hotspot with my android, following these steps from GBATemp:

1. Install: wifi_tether_v3_3-beta2.apk
2. start the app
3. Go to Settings and
3.a) change Device Profile to: Auto
3.b) change Setup-Method to: Auto
3.c) change SSID to: attwifi
3.d) check on Mac Address Spoof
3.e) Change Mac address to one of the list found here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/lv?key=0AvvH5W4E2lIwdEFCUkxrM085ZGp0UkZlenp6SkJablE&toomany=true
3.f) check Wifi-driver reload and Wifi-driver reload 2
4. Go back, tab on the Wifi. Now you have Streetpass relay.

I have problems with the step 3f, since those options doesn't appear on my app.
I don't know if it's related or not, but when I try to tether, it marks a Mac Address error.

anyone had the same problem? :/

This DD-WRT cron job here:

Code:
0-59/6 * * * * root ifconfig eth1 down && ifconfig eth1 hw ether 40:53:50:4F:4F:`/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1``/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1` && ifconfig eth1 up
3-59/6 * * * * root ifconfig eth1 down && ifconfig eth1 hw ether 4E:53:50:4F:4F:`/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1``/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1` && ifconfig eth1 up

Should it just work without any adjustments? It didn't seem to work for me :( I'll try it again tomorrow though. Also, does anyone know how to edit the cron to make it update once every 2 minutes instead of every 3? I've no idea about Linux stuff!

So the last couple of times I've been to Stansted Airport it has been a Nintendo Zone (in fact that is where the app installed itself on my system).

Just taken a flight from there and there was no sign of t'Zone.

Do they turn them off or something?

got the same error and solved it by changing Device Profile from Auto to my S3 one. No more errors and the two additional options popped up

try it mate

Where did you get that?
With this job you are changing the MAC address of an ethernet connexion (eth1). You want to use wlan0 for the wifi.
I don't know what this part is for
Code:
`/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1``/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1`
(I suppose it's for some randomisation) but you may want to remove it for now and just use a single MAC address for your test.
0-59/6 means the job is run every 6 minutes starting from minute 0 on the clock. 3-59/6 same but starting from minute 3. it allow both jobs to alternate every three minutes. To make it two, change it to 0-59/4 and 2-59/4 respectively.

if it doesn't work search how you can ssh into it, then you will be able to make some tests.

This DD-WRT cron job here:

Code:
0-59/6 * * * * root ifconfig eth1 down && ifconfig eth1 hw ether 40:53:50:4F:4F:`/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1``/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1` && ifconfig eth1 up
3-59/6 * * * * root ifconfig eth1 down && ifconfig eth1 hw ether 4E:53:50:4F:4F:`/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1``/bin/cat /proc/interrupts | /usr/bin/md5sum | /usr/bin/cut -b 1` && ifconfig eth1 up

Works for me, but i had to check with some ssid scan software because the mac change is not shown in the routers gui.
If you want a change every 2 minutes you should change 0-59/6 to 0-59/4 and 3-59/6 to 2-59/4.

Hmm, trying to set up the wifitether on my phone, but it keep getting failures on configuring ap with maxclients and starting AP
