Grand Theft Auto Online: Official Gameplay Video, launches October 1st

"GTA Online will not always be limited to Los Santos; additional locations are in the works"

Exactly. That's what the Just Cause 2 MP mod was and it was great fun.

I don't want it to turn into a chaotic clusterfuck with a bunch of people running around looking similar and going nuts. 16 players is perfect for either jumping in with the crowd, or going off on your own to engage in activities and hunt other players. Give me room to breathe without hordes of people all over my ass everywhere I go.

We're only talking about current gen consoles. 16 players online with that map, number of vehicles, customizations and everything else going on is an achievement. Most developers can only put together MP with no vehicles on a map the size of two GTA city blocks.

Wouldn't the option be nice, even if you didn't want to use it? Capping the amount of players would be adjustable, of course.

I'm excited by the new locations thing, but also worried about it.
If this thing takes off in a big way (and i don't see why it shouldn't) i can see them snubbing the single player side of the Grand Theft Auto franchise.

Sure, it would be fine just as an option for those who wanted it. But I imagine the eventual PC version is where you will want to play it if you want more players. As for me? 16 players suits what I am looking for just fine. I want to enjoy the world and engage with others at my own pace, without being smothered in chaotic hordes of people going nuts and killing each other all over the map.

It's the biggest overworld in any GTA and 16 is "perfect"? You could still easily do the above with 32 players and in the event you actually want to find someone, it would be easier.

hopefully this is true online free roam play, not a bunch of half assed instanced minigames thrown together, separated from eachother

if two random people are playing a game of golf on the golf course, i should be able to AT ANY TIME take my car and drive on the fairway and run them over killing both and ruining their game

because its fucking funny

Dont whine. If you dont want to risk being griefed, go play a private match with friends and play some golf

Red Dead online was hilarious and awesome when it first launch. then all that BS to limit griefing came out and the game simply wasnt fun to mess with people anymore

the idea that you would go to different areas, get a prompt and then magically warp yourself off to some separate entity of gameplay oblivious to the world around you is not only archaic, amateur in design, but devoid of the very notion something like a free mode is meant to be for

Yes, I think it will be perfect for me. As I will spend a lot of time just roaming around doing stuff by myself with my custom character, and with plenty of room to hunt others whenever the mood takes me. But when I want to join in for heists or whatever, I can just as easily head to where the crowds are. This is an online world that is like the single player experience, but the other players will be there when I want to interact with them. That is what I want in an online game.

Wasn't Red Dead only 16? It always felt pretty active to me despite that. I mean ideally there'd be an option for more players, but I don't think it'll be as bad as some think.

OP should add this too, the majority of the new info from the CVG preview that somebody on the GiantBomb forums wrote up:
  • Characters from GTA V will appear in GTA Online
  • GTA Online will not always be limited to Los Santos; additional locations are in the works
  • You can do anything in GTA Online that you can do in GTA V, like the following: heists, co-op missions, gang attacks, death matches, impromptu deathmatch, races, tennis, golf, base jumping, shooting range, ambient events (hold ups of stores, armored van robberies, crate drops, import/export missions involving car theft, bounties that you can set on other players and people can claim), betting
  • If you are killed while holding money you will lose a large portion of it, and others can steal it. Use banks to keep money safe
  • An in-game smartphone can call your friends whether they are in GTA Online or GTA V. You can also use this to set waypoints for your friends. While using the phone, your avatar moves their lips with yours.
  • While you are driving, you can choose to grant someone else permission over the radio
  • In-game AI will respond to how aggressive you are on your mic (as in, if you're shouting during a robbery, the AI will react and speed up/become more frightened)
Whoever sets up a heist decides who gets what cut of the final money when that money is obtained
  • Garages range from two car ports to 10 car ports
  • Cars can have retractable roofs controlled by the player through the Interaction menu
  • Missions can be accessed by physical markers or through a quickmatch sort of menu
  • User-made missions can be favorited and rated
  • You can assign other players certain roles in missions based on the particular abilities they have leveled up
  • You can share cash, weapons and ammunition with other players
  • If a another player or friend feels they got stiffed in the amount of cash shared they can hire a hitman to take you out
  • There are stealth kills. The game tracks the amount of noise your character is making, and the AI will respond accordingly
  • You can steal physical items. During the demo, a mission was done in which a bike warehouse was robbed. The bikes had to be transported out in a large truck
  • "RP" are the points you get to level up your character
  • You can use physical gestures, such as flipping the bird via the Interaction menu. The example given was a player asked another player for a ride who agreed and called him over, but when the player got to the car he got flipped off and the other player drove off.
  • If you're without a ride you can call Taxis, a friend or an "employee to come out and give you a ride or bring a car
  • All of your info/communications in the game appear in the "Feed." Rockstar mentioned this as a sort of Twitter for GTA Online
  • You can purchase insurance for your car. By insuring your vehicle, if it gets destroyed or stolen, you can have it replaced by paying a small premium
  • Police helicopters have cameras mounted to the front of them. In real time, you can watch on live TV (on the news channel in your apartment) players with a high wanted level being chased by the police. There are additional channels with programs such as a crime noir show
  • Heists can have up to 20 different components. A heist is mentioned where a Titan (largest aircraft) is guarded by "Maryweather" (sp?). The Titan is indeed a flyable aircraft
There is a heli-pad on the roof of (at least) the largest AmmuNation and the store can also be accessed from there
  • Off the west coast of Los Santos, there is an another island with lots of buildings. This has not been seen before, but the folks at CVG saw it from afar
  • There is a "passive" mode or "Haven" where you cannot shoot or be shot
  • You can use the Interaction menu to wear a mask during hold ups so that when you get away taking off the mask lowers your wanted level
  • For a brief time when you're wanted you can see on the radar the cop's vision cone, ala MGS/Driver, or the Detection Zone.

This is so ridiculous. God do I want this game now.

Yeah, and that is what I like about it. I have plenty of room to lone wolf or join in and it feels just right, without too much chaos in free roam. But here there is a metric-ton more to do, so I imagine it will work out even better.

I think the 16 player limit will work well, as mentioned before it seemed to work well in Red Dead. Even then I was still being blown up by dynamite over and over within 10 seconds of joining, with the different forms of transport it will probably be even easier for players to reach each over quickly in comparison.

Was on the fence somewhat about pre-ordering before but the order was placed about a minute into that Online trailer, cannot wait for it now, going to be all over those parachutes.

I'm sure this has been discussed here on GAF already, but how in hell are Rockstar going to maintain this massive multiplayer part of GTA on old hardware? No one is going to play it on old consoles when next-gen arrives, right?

Nope, other way around. No one is going to buy next-gen consoles because they'll be playing GTA.

:P

It's in this hour preview, but I can't remember where. They said it is like a huge town.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6nYIO-mkz10

It's pretty crazy to think we're almost a month away from the launch, yet Rockstar has reveled just a portion of the game. We know that gangs will be back, but in what capacity? How will yoga work? Triathlons? Bounty Hunting? Hunting?

There's so much we don't know yet, and I love it.

I wonder how much would've been scrapped had it not been delayed?
Buying properties for sure. The early previews said that you couldn't do it.

Indeed. There seems to be so much that the strategy to release the amazing online world two weeks later makes complete sense. It is looking to be an overwhelming game on all fronts.

It's a completely unrealistic expectation. One would need to have a videogame IQ of -10 not to have at least a basic intuition as to why.

It just distracts from real conversation about things that can happen in the actual reality we all occupy.

WAT?

Damn. That's pretty cool.

I'm already thinking about all of the secrets and shit that R* is keeping under wraps. As someone mentioned, they really haven't shown much all things considered.

It needs to be September 17 right now!

When CVG said "sports events" do you think they meant the tennis, bike races, etc. or something else?

And yeah, after seeing the gameplay trailer I was excited but definitely got the impression they were holding back.

I'm still really excited we can smoke weed as odd as that is. (I don't smoke, it's just a cool feature).

RDR had the free aim servers... GTA5 has freeaim supported, so I would expect freeaim-only MP as an option.

you had to unlock free aim in RDR and it took forever, which is why i quit playing the game. Free aim needs to be the standard mode or this game will be garbage online just like RDR and GTA4

Has the auto aim been addressed? that is what will make or break this game online for me
I wish R* would just do away completely with lock-on aiming for multiplayer. Personally didn't need it at all in Red Dead or MP 3.

An option in single-player is fine if some people out there use it, but they should drop it completely from multiplayer.

Really? I don't remember that... I could swear I just played free-aim in MP from the outset.

It was a while ago though, so memory could be screwing with me.

having lock-on aim and free aim is stupid together. Just make it free aim and call it a day. The only thing I didn't like about MP3's shooting is the actual reticule size.. It was so freaking tiny! I loved the feedback from shooting and the controls but trying to aim that tiny dot was cumbersome in free aim mode.

They must have: co-op races (multiple people in the vehicles) and weapons mixed in somehow.

They must.

They must have: co-op races (multiple people in the vehicles) and weapons mixed in somehow.

They must.

If that's not a variable for races by default. I hope the gametype editor is flexible enough to do that in a controlled manner.

If not, then hopefully that comes later, as some of the previews have mentioned that the editor will most likely be updated as time goes on.

WAT?

Where is this? I must read/listen to source.

CVG specifically said on Twitter about 2 hours ago that this is _not_ a big city. It's something they hadn't previously seen, but they dispelled rumors of a San Fran or Las Venturas. An small San Diego like city though? Who knows.

Regarding adding in stuff --

During the CVG interview with Leslie Benzies, they asked if you could play doubles in tennis right when they saw the two people playign tennis, and Leslie stopped and grabbed a piece of paper and said "Not at launch, but we're gonna get on that." Something to that effect... Pretty awesome. So if you can't ride shot gun in a race and blow up other cars with a gun at launch, I bet they add that later.

  • Giant list of awesome.

I have a feeling that my launch PS4 is going to sit unopened for a long time. Holy shit balls.

That's my hope.

Also... (this is a stretch, I admit) this game (in order to make some really wacky mp scenarios) needs a big heavy ballistic suit. haha like a bomb suit. So if you did like a combat destruction derby, the driver would be protected from small-arms fire. Or you could have a VIP-type mode where you protect/target a slower bomb suit player / AI.
