I dont even-what.

Well... I proudly contributed my 2200 yen yesterday, together with another gaffer.
should've organized a bigger meat up though.
but I generally liked it, although I think they could've made so much more. the stupid romance felt kinda forced, like always. but that's what you get with Hollywood.

I'm glad that I saw it, everything about the movie gave me really strong xenoblade vibes all the time. and most of the interior shots and the mechs themselves looked like they were taken straight out of the X trailer... can't go wrong with that.

the only thing I didn't like at all was the sound mixing...you could barely make out what most of the people were saying most of the time. had to constantly read the subtitles because the background noise was just too loud. also I didn't like the main theme.

overall... yeah, I might even go see it for a 2nd time. maybe.

edit: just forgot the most important part:
what I really liked about the movie was that the robots actually felt heavy (most of the time) compared to the ridiculous transformer stuff.

It's an interesting case of how a movie like his can be so awesome, yet another movie like Transformers 2, which at a glance looks like the same movie, can be so incredibly, brain-bleedingly awful.

On 2ch, Japan's largest bulletin board, a thread talked about why Kikuchi hadn't become popular in her home country. The thread is fairly brutal (actually, it's really brutal), and some say her looks aren't appealing to Japanese, while others commented about the graphic nudity in Babel—something that seemed unbecoming. Then, some didn't even know who she was.

In 2010, Kikuchi appeared on afternoon variety show Waratte Iitomo!, which is an iconic Japanese program. It's an institution, like The Tonight Show. Her appearance went so poorly that people on Yahoo! Japan (here and here, for example) began saying she should never appear on variety or talk shows again. While she seemed stylish, Kikuchi didn't make a very good impression and came off as awkward. Perhaps she was nervous? Whatever the case was, she seemed to lose even more fans.

One of the main issues seemed to be how in Japan the mass media and the country's entertainment complex work in tandem. Her success was achieved outside of that realm. And then when she actually did appear on Japanese TV, she seemed somewhat awkward and not exactly quick with quips—a necessity to survive in mainstream Japanese show business. For many Japanese it's perhaps baffling why she, out of all the Japanese actors, has been successful abroad. For Americans, it's probably akin to when particular entertainers become far more popular in foreign countries than in Hollywood.

Pacific Ris muuuuuch better than Star Trek, IMO. Star Trek's ridiculousness felt out of place, while PR's ridiculousness felt like it meshed well with the atmosphere and overall feel of the movie.

Anything stand out in particular about Into Darkness that makes you put it above PR? Trek's pacing felt off, and the plot kept moving from place to place without a sense of flow, both temporally and geographically. The character dynamics/relationships weren't much more engaging in ST than PR, and even then, ST has the advantage of the prior movies and Start Trek legacy to provide backstory and history.

PR's plot is straightforward, and the characters are nice and simple (in a good way). The movie doesn't pretend that it's trying for a deeper dynamic that it's suited for, and therefore the focus of the movie is more on moving the plot forward with awesome robot on monster action scenes - beautifully framed, shot, and choreographed.

This is why they should have gone with Hiroshi Abe as the co-pilot and love interest. Far more popular in Japan, also better actor than Rinko could ever hope to be.

While trying to re-find this one, I saw other articles from different places saying basically the same thing. Again though, I'm sure it wasn't the only factor. It just wasn't the bonus you would expect from having a Japanese actor as a lead.

Also, this reminds me I should watch Babel.

Really surprised that people love this movie so much. The plot is fine but the execution is so terrible. There is no way in hell they would have kept coastal cities around when trillions in damage were being done to them weekly.

Then they create robots at incredible cost to fight the beasts in waist deep water in the dark and rain battling hand to hand instead of setting up long range defenses. Don't get me started on the BS wall. Also, who flies jets down city streets firing missiles from 200 meters away? You are in a jet that flies high with missiles that travel for a long damn distance.

Why not just depth mine the shit out of the waterways first? Get the mechs to get some land based distance and line of sight before engaging. That's what any sensible military operation would do.

And yeah, instead of creating one type of robot and mass producing it they had the brilliant idea of making tons of variations over a few scant years. A car company barely does that with 100 years of industry experience let alone a mech startup over a decade.

There is no logical justification for anything. Yeah I get it, check your brain at the door, but come on, make some effort to make the world tangible. All the good sci fi or adventure movies make the effort to do the world building legwork. Macross put in the damn effort.

Also why did the main character and the Australian guy look identical in a midshot?

Also couldn't stand how water pressure meant nothing. Nothing can make me believe even 6 helicopters could carry and deploy one of those Jaegers.

Worst of all, the two scientist characters were the biggest miscalculation since Chris Tucker in The Fifth Element. Cue hilarious gif response proving I'm right.

that entire first 15 minutes was legendary. one of the most incredible openings to a film ive seen in a while

the 3d was remarkable during this whole sequence and the awesome soundtrack just gave me goosebumps.

If I remember right, Kaiju weren't attacking every week until towards the end. This is why the scientist was predicting a double event would happen soon since the attacks were becoming more frequent. Before then, I think it was maybe months between attacks and they tried to engage them in the water to minimize damage.

Kaiju's toxic blood would have made it not a great idea to explode them in the ocean. This is why they were trying to beat them to death. The real reason though is that it wouldn't have been as entertaining to watch a movie about sniping Kaiju.

And yeah, instead of creating one type of robot and mass producing it they had the brilliant idea of making tons of variations over a few scant years. A car company barely does that with 100 years of industry experience let alone a mech startup over a decade.

Besides the fact that the Kaiju were always different thus no one model would be perfect, the fact that they were improving the Jaeger models rapidly enough to classify them as different gens, and the fact that different countries were building their own mechas as opposed to one company, that would have been not as cool.

Eh it's a movie. Most people didn't give a fuck about the science of water pressure during any of this movie. I did find the copters carrying the mechs a little ridiculous though.

I loved the scientists but I see how that wouldn't work for other people. Most of my theater found them pretty damn funny though.

Basically your problems with the movie seem to be your inability for suspension of disbelief and the entire premise of the movie. That's fine, and perhaps this movie wasn't for you but personally I wanted to see a movie where big robots fight big monsters and I thought they did a great job making that as plausible as possible.

I just went to see the movie here in Japan. There wasn't all that many people at the theater, but then again every time I watch a movie here the theater is half empty (it was IMAX 3D).

As for the movie itself... I enjoyed it quite a lot. The story was whatever... average. But that's not what I went to watch the movie for. I went for the sci-fi porn and left more than satisfied.
Some of the designs were great, and while I'm not the biggest fan of that kind of robots, the suits and other elements were great too, and the sense of scale was spot on except for a few situations, so I didn't mind it.

It had a bunch of things that left me confused and things that were a bit weird... but this movie isn't meant to be taken serious and you can't expect for everything to make sense scientifically, so I just ignored it and enjoyed the show.

I will go and watch it again with a few friends next week

Oh and one thing, there are a few conversations in Japanese that felt slightly awkward.. lol

Pretty awesome for it to have taken off in China to effectively squander any talk about the movie being a flop. When foreign totals for the next few weeks are recorded it'll definitely be closer to $400M.
