NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

Haven't really stayed on schedule because I have been really busy but I have been doing a few. I was on a FFXIV kick lately while I am waiting for it to start up again.

Looks like something straight out of anime. Good stuff!

This my contribution today.

Vio, she reminds me to Panzer Dragoon.

EDIT: Nevermind, this is starting to feel like calculus, I will never get to the point that I want to reach.

I swear I'm going to do a bunch of studies before attempting to finish another piece again :/

Day 50, ~30min.
Day 51, ~1hr.

Your work has really got me focusing my own work on highlighting the planes of the body. You do such a great job capturing the complexity but with such a clean approach.

Thanks! I still make lots of basic construction mistakes, so I try to practice that stuff regularly. If you're new to breaking shapes down into block forms and planes I'd recommend checking out Loomis' section on it in Figure drawing for all it's worth, or better yet, find yourself a copy of Bridgman's Constructive Anatomy if you don't already have it.

I'm back from my holiday.

The terrible art shall commence!

Time: 39 mins
Medium: GIMP + Wacom

Annoyingly, in the two week gap DeviantArt has decided to play silly buggers with Opera 12.x, despite the fact that this an up to date and maintained browser (while Opera port features into the Blink based versions).

Well, I guess this would be Day 1:

I've never really done anything like this before. I'm just trying out Art Academy 1 on the DS to see if I should invest in the 3DS (and Wii U) versions (hence the unfortunately crude mobile snaps, my apologies for that, I wouldn't bother maximising them for that reason, as the quoted size is closer to the resolution I drew them at).

About 20 minutes each.

Day 53, ~1hr.

Anyways, spent about two hours doing this one. Dude's an Acetic (named after the acid, not the lifestyle) trooper. Stands about 10 feet tall if you count the horns. Icy knuckle things can be spring-loaded to rip the faces off of anything particularly bothersome. Major props to Jujubeads for the helmet design and helping nail down the overall aesthetic.

As for how the head works: the head itself is embalmed in the scarves, with one end trailing out the front of the helmet mesh, and the other end trailing out the back but segmented into the wiry dreadlock things.

Hey, just wondering, are you using any reference for your anatomy? You have such a tight grip on it!

I'm just wondering how I can improve mine...

I'm probably wrong, but they remind me of Figure Drawing, design and invention a lot. A nice book to learn anatomy from.

Day 56, ~40min
Really like your anatomy practices and those lines. What software and hardware are you using?
I use Photoshop and a large Wacom Intuos 2 tablet.

Unless it's a study I tend not to use reference anymore, at least not for general muscle anatomy. I have a hard time with hands and feet, so if I'm focusing on those I'll try to mimic the gesture or find a pic on google that's close to what I'm trying to draw. Heads are also a big mystery from certain angles, so I'll use reference there as well.

As for how to improve anatomy, that's a tough one. There are a lot of ways to go about it, and if you're like me you just have try different books/exercises until you find someone who explains it in a way that works for you. Zoukka's recommended book is good, especially when it comes to isolating and simplifying the skeleton and muscle groups into manageable forms. That's particularly helpful when drawing from imagination. The authors I keep returning to are Loomis, Bridgman, and Bammes. There's a series of lectures by Vilppu that are great as well.

Indeed, Hampton has been an influence.

How do you guys keep yourselves motivated?

I just remember that either near or far, Death lurks hard. My time on earth is precious, and I want to spend it drawing and making art more than anything else.

Or I just browse Instagram or FFFFOUND! for an hour.

Also, I'm back. Doing two-a-days till I catch up.
