GC: DriveClub gameplay

This.

A joystick is far too imprecise to model 900 degree lock to lock steering.

Then show 900 degree lock to lock only when the player is using a wheel. Or as an alternative give the player the option to remove the hands and the steering wheel of the car.

It's ugly to see 2 steering wheels ahead of you when using a wheel.

Man switching between this game and gt6 is going to be driving heaven, I can't wait. Just pls have good wheel support!

Windshield reflections have been there in the some of the earliest pictures they released.

To me, on a technical level, it looks about the same, the difference is that the scenery is prettier on this track.
Maybe on those pictures, but not on any of the videos I've seen. Framerate and shadows are better looking now. Shadows used to look really janky in the E3 footage. Also, I'm not seeing massive amounts of upclose scenery popup like there used to be in that other track.

A driving game that at last pays as much to environmental detail and bringing life to the circuits. For so long we've been stuck with clinical tracks that are devoid of life.

It's a shame they're sacrificing framerate for it. I'd rather have smooth gameplay than pretty trees.

Maybe I'm not as hardcore as I would like to believe. I've been playing games for 25+ years. I've played many modern PC games at 60 frames per second and many console games at 30 frames per second. I honestly cannot tell much of a difference. Especially when it comes to watching a video of gameplay.

Fun games are fun. The only time I don't have fun in a game is when there is a framerate that is not consistent and drops to 10 or 15 frames per second. That is when I notice and it starts to ruin the fun for me.

Driveclub looks good to me and even better since it's a PS+ download and upgrade situation. I'll absolutely download it and if I have fun with it 30 FPS or not I'll upgrade it. I know some of you can tell a discernible difference between 60 and 30 frames. I can't.

Man, how can you not tell the difference between 30 and 60 FPS!

I can't either :-/

I would like to see this game use dynamic resolution like Wipeout to get that 60fps.

If it had to scale down to 1280x1080 that would be a fair compromise.

Otherwise it needs some subtle motion blur.

We need a team for this, I'm on this team.

I got it.

I must say this game is looking gorgeous! The environments are looking fantastic, and with the ability to set the time of day I'm pretty damn stoked.

I do with they'd clean up that HUD a bit, or maybe allow me to disable it all together. I LOVE the first person and cockpit views, the mirror reflections looked fantastic.

The good

  • The trees look nice if a bit weird
  • I like the lighting on the trees and the dashbord
  • all dynamic lighting by the looks of it
  • some nice textures
  • high polycount

The bad

  • The artstyle? could be better for a realistic themed racer
  • frame dips
  • a few jaggies
  • some textures are worse then others

I think its will be a good game in terms of visuals and gameplay but I dont expect a masterpiece or it to be top of its class.

This new build really looks way better than previous one.

I need to see a direct feed first but for now there a good possibility to #DriveClub be better than Forza 5 in graphics terms.

I'm not sure it's something unique to this game or anything, but I'm definitely appreciating the density of the landscape, if that makes any sense. I hated seeing racing games that speckle shit into them. Especially when your moving so fast, it just looks so weak. Seems like they made these environments robust. I'm 1000% sure Forza 5 will have better environments than what Metalmurphey showed, but that pictures was the perfect example of what I'm talking about, just awful in so many ways.

Also, if the game is looking this good now, I can only imagine what it'll look like when Evo puts on the last layer of polish and slaps on more effects. I'm expecting some serious DOF. Anyone remember how gorgeous the environments were in Pacific Rift?

It was either Prague, or Laguna Seca, I took a wild guess in thinking that Prague would have the most trees lol.

Here's a better one though:

I'm sure I saw a camera angle that was on the dash, with the steering wheel out of view.

See I know it's not fair to compare because we don't have these games in hand, but it looks like there's a green wall behind the trees in forza. Y'know what I'm saying? It just lacks that density. I know for a fact it won't look so terrible in reality, but that's one area it's just getting its ass handed to it in my opinion.

I really love that this has this new upclose windshield view. Not sure if any other game before had it, but it actually approximates the best what the driver in a real car cares about seeing while driving, and how the field of vision is filled up.

Already has motion blur, and it's subtle, which is why not everyone seem to notice that it's there. Just look through the side window when the video shows in-car view.

Also, note the nice detail between 3:00 and 3:10 - when the car drives over the plant life, you can see the plants caving in as the car drives over them.

Did I miss something or have we never seen a simple race where you drive against some opponents? I can only remember seeing more than 2 cars on the trailers... never ingame...

Am I wrong?

30 fps and better graphics > dumb downed graphics and 60 fps

In this case I'm not sure the graphics justify that trade off right now.

Does it play/look any good in person?

Well the image quality wasn't that great, there was lots of aliasing but it could've been amplified by bad display settings (sharpness too high, etc).
The framerate was nowhere near 60 fps, so expect 30 for launch (and then maybe be pleasantly surprised if they do manage 60).
It did play fine though, not too arcadey or simulation-heavy, you have to be careful not to step on the gas too hard or you'll spin out

Why is locked 30 fps suddenly unsmooth gameplay? I think people are putting too much stock in this idea that "60fps=smooth, 30fps=choppy mess".

I think they're trying to capture the "style" and competitive aspects of the club play at the moment. I thought I read somewhere that Driveclubs LOD's aren't that massive, but they don't seem to fluctuate which could in theory be easy for them to tell how much horsepower will be needed to run things.

You live up to your junior status very well.
There are a good possibility to my next post be a Member post.

But I really think what I said... in terms of cars seems like Forza 5 have the edge but the environments in #DriveClub are something that I never saw in a racing game before (PC included).

Are you not impressed?

Edit - Don't get me wrong... I'm just comparing graphics... I prefer Forza physics over #DriverClub from what I saw.

Seeing the reflection of the dash in the windshield when the car passed through the sunlight was a real little "woah" next-gen moment for me. Just an awesome detail I wouldn't have even thought about before.

Edit: See here with from the bottom middle to the bottom right of the windshield. I don't know if any other racing game has done that (they very well could have) but that's just SO cool.

Big time. I always quote it as Good framerate versus Great framerate. 30 FPS + good DOF + Good motion blur > 60FPS any day of the week.

COD looked like ass compared to Killzone.

Pacific rift looked better than any racer last gen in my opinion. The environments were just too damn beautiful.

Why do you say that?

There is a good possibility that DC looks better than Forza 5 at launch.

No offense to the good people of Forza, but honestly that was a given. This is Evolution were talking about here. The only company I can think of that notoriously "bumps" graphics like 20% the week before launch lol.

I think this looks really good, that one segment, going through the mountains with the snow on the side of the road, it looks amazing.

I am not going to preorder it, but I am definitely going to download the PS Plus version, play a few races, then if I enjoy it, upgrade to the full version thanks to the discounted PS Plus Full Version Upgrade Option.

I can comfortably say, Driveclub hasn't looked better to this point.

Do we know what build number/version this is? Are we up to 50% yet? I know E3 was 35% complete build.

I have already posted what I think of it, and everyone has there opionion I just dont see the point in making comparisons?

Cant we just judge the game individually, becuase there is no better looking game, it is not a fact one game looks better then the other, there are just people who prefer one over the other, so it is pointless even discussing it, you might aswell argue about religion or politics.

Fair comment, cheers.

the demo was locked at 30. i don't see how anyone but evolution would know how likely it could manage 60.

Come on, the car practically look like plastic. This is the same criticism the Forza had for the longest time until the improved their lighting model. Kind of makes their first original video look shady as fuck.

On the other hand, I actually do prefer Arcade racers and PGR is my favourite so I'm sure this game will actually be awesome gameplay wise. It's really cool that Sony is giving a Basic Version of the game for free. With a wider exposure through PSPlus, I really hope it succeeds financially.

It would be wonderful to see where this series can go in it's 2nd or 3rd iteration.

The game runs at 30 and they said they are trying to get to 60 but not making any promises. Since it's no longer a launch game,
maybe they are going to be able to pull it off.

What? Did I miss something? Have the game been postponed?

On an other note, I'm slightly dissapointed by this demo, not because of the I.Q. or the enviroment, that I find great, but 'because I was hoping that it would have featured the day- night cycle in all its integrity. We already kinda seen it in action in the previous demo but I was thinking more among the line of a real time implementation so that people playing the demo in the morning have a different lighting from the ones playing it in the afternoon or the evening...

No.

It's still pegged as a launch game.
