GC: DriveClub gameplay

This whole best of both world arcade/sim they're describing it as reeks of R: Racing Evolution.

I really want to like this game, and is the only exclusive I care about so far at launch, but there's just no excitement here beyond the graphics : /

The video's they've released in the past have all been in-game according to Evolution. Which is why he called you out on your comment. They weren't bullshottery so to speak. Based on the video's of this new build, that seems about right. Only thing the PR video's etc are missing is some of the aliasing, so either the final game will have more AA, or they selectively chose scenes that look cleaner.

Well... I played the game today. Looked nothing like all of these "screenshots".

But, as I've said, the LCD screens at the Sony booth were horrible. Maybe the are to blame for some of it.

I think you have to do the usual filter to differentiate the screens and trailers which are all most likely from a replay view with extra detail/post processing, versus gameplay. No different from any other game, and racing games in particular.

The gameplay videos from the show floor show a clear improvement from E3 after only 2 months, and evo have about the same amount of time again for further improvements.

I am curious about the gameplay, especially the handling. Everyone has been so focused on the graphics that we haven't really heard anything about how it handles, how the mini 'challenges' slot into the core gameplay etc. that's why I'm a little cool on it at the moment.

Did you get a chance to race or see any night gameplay? Also not sure you would have gone through it or not, but did you see any of the hud options? I'm actually hoping to play this game with no HUD at all. Perhaps just the social pop-ups.

Nope. Was a series of challenges during the day on the track we all know from the videos.

Didn't get access to any menus, only thing I could change was the camera position.

Did set the fastest time of the day (on this specific PS4) though.. ;)

At least I think so.

What specifically looks bad about the game

Here's footage from the press video's versus off screen from this new build.

That in-car camera view is perfect, makes such a difference to the immersion level.

Informative video too.

They shoulda made this a first person cockpit view ONLY game...i know many no racing game types might be intimidated by that view, but it makes the game better and probably frees up a decent amount of compute power since the car isnt on screen, reflections / smoke etc are cut down, and the A pillars and roof remove some of the graphics.

See that first R8 pic versus GC pics?

GC build lacks that subtle beauty. Also the muted colours look nicer.

I personally prefer the way the GC build looks over those first set of screenshots. Maybe because the assets and what not are higher quality, there are more environmental things to look at and more colorful. Not complaining at all the way DriveClub is looking right now. It's already better than Forza 5 is for me (and the lighting goes a long way to do that I think, Forza's is still too "cartoony" to me)

Absolutely love how much plantlife they put in (and the quality of it as well). Can't wait to play races in a ton of different lighting conditions.

PlayStation Access Hands on GamesCom very good hands on and explanation of game play with a good driver.

I know it's off screen footage & all, but BLEH.
30fps/60fps be damned, this just doesn't look all that good at all.
If you were to tell me this was a Xbox 360 game, I wouldn't doubt you.

The wilderness environment isn't blowing anyone away, I'd say the footage they shown so far, even the first DiRT racer looks better.

I just don't understand why it is so hard for them to make this 60FPS.

What is it doing that is so power consuming as to make 60 FPS so elusive?

WTF?? I swear to god that people are using this game to get their opportunity to crap on the ps4

I think you made your point already several posts ago.

360? 360 racers never looked even clos3e.

People seem to somehow mystify 30 and 60 FPS on consoles. It's the same as PC games, you have to drop fidelity to increase FPS, and to increase the FPS by 30 you have to lose a lot of it. This can be AA, texture detail, effects, lighting etc.

The bonnet cam looks terrific! And the reflection of the dash really in the windshield really immerses, much like F5. 2 months to go and i know in that time things will be further polished and optimized.

yeah I touched on this...I'd say he could fall somewhere in the first category

lets all be honest here.

most of the posters who have been negatively vocal regarding 30fps in arcade racing game in these DriveClub threads are probably

a few Forza instigators - who were never interested in the game or a PS4 in the first place
a few Bitter GT fans- who are bitter because GT6 was not a PS4 game...so they want 60fps racing gameplay anyway they can get it for their PS4.
maybe a couple of PC gamers- who hate the fact that in 2013, a newly released game is 30fps.

so you have your few vocal gamers.

but I'm sure Motorstorm fans, NFS Fans, Horizon Fans, PGR fans...are all looking forward to trying the game for free, and don't mind or didn't expect this game to be 60fps in the first place.

To be fair to many of the Naysayers, car games are the biggest genre to run into diminishing returns. If all you do is look at the car models themselves, yeah you won't be blown away by any of this next gen stuff. The difference between 100k polygons and 1M poly's is significantly less noticeable on cars than it is on people, considering cars at they're fundamental level are simple geometry.

As it stands now, I don't think the payoff for the games visuals are worth the 60FPS sacrifice, sure, but I fully expect a kick-ass anti-aliasing, draw distance, and motion blur before this drops. C'mon people, this is Evolution studios were talking about here. I don't think there will be a difference between what they've showed us in trailers and what the finalized product will look like.

The game does seem to have pretty weird issue with aliasing, cropping up some ways further into the distance, I could see as much on the offscreen video. However, other than IQ, it should look like those released screens, doesn't it? In terms of textures, lighting, details, etc.

Looks about right for a free game.

pretty much. this still looks fucking bad to me, almost embarassing compared to mostorstorm. and all the ui bullshit ,gross, couldnt stand playing Burnout Paradise because of that crap, hey you beat some dudes random time you couldnt give less of a shit about, yay!?

Don't play the racer trying to introduce more social elements? "some dude" is supposed to be members of your club, or friends, hopefully they'll add an option to turn those features off for people who don't care about them.
