Killzone Mercenary Beta Discussion

Had a little blitz last night it was quite fun, will give it a proper go over the weekend, definitely gonna turn up the turn sensitivity and gyro aiming though, they were a little low for my liking.

Maps are much smaller and more intimate, there's a lot more tactical options (a bunch of robotic drones you can control, you can buy and fully customise your loadout), you can incapacitate enemies rather than kill them and interrogate them to reveal all their teammates on the map, controls are a bit faster and I didn't notice any lag or anything. There are subtle differences and it's only 4 vs. 4, but while I played loads of KZ2 back in the day I can't remember it too clearly. Controls feel closer to KZ3 but the gameplay is a good mix between the two. Hopefully there will be some maps which feel a little larger and more open as they were my favourite in KZ2, but then we'll see as that might not suit the small team sizes so much.

Its not so brutal. It is more cerebral playing.Much more tactical.Playing with a good and coordinated team is greatly rewarded and very satisfying. It could be loved even by Socom players as is basically 1-2 shoots dead.
But take my word:this will be Vita must have game, at least for fps and multiplayer lovers.

Thanks, I think I'm going to have to grab a Vita + this game when this hits stores :D

The random respawning in this game is absurd.

1. A player from the other team and me appeared one in front of the other, he tried to use hand combat but I countered him, and them shooted him.

2. I was killed by Sky Fury then I appear again just a few meters away just to be killed by Sky Fury again in the very first second.

3. I was killed when I was hacking, then I reappear just behind the guy who killed me and my killed body, just shooted him.

4. I respawned just between two guys from the enemy team.

I have found its only annoying now and then. Its still better than in all modern CoD games where its out right ridiculous.

I just read the last two pages and there were people with problems with the sticks. They just aren't great when you need to aim precisely with the right stick. I'd love to connect my PS3 pad via bluetooth, I have no idea why they never allowed that.
I'm happy they don't allow it. Vita's anlogs aren't great for aiming but it's not like other players have better sticks, everyone is equal.

You can turn on motion aiming by the way, it helps to be more precise.

Its strange how used to the vita sticks you can get. I think all the people who think it plays really well are like me and have been playing vita more than anything for the past year and a bit. When I first went to the Vita I still liked them but they didn't feel as good. However I am so used to them now I think it feels just as good as the few times I will used an xbox controller on my PC.

Plus gyro aiming for extra tweaking is great.

Playing too much Vita makes your thumbs lazy!
When I use DS3's now, I feel like I'm putting in too much effort or over extending the analogs to move. Vita makes your thumbs lazy.

Haven't played any matches today, but I've noticed that some dormant friends (some of which I've never seen online, ever) have finally appeared for this beta. :)

Also, here's a friendly porcupine -

Just read the Eurogamer article comparing PS3 and PS Vita graphics, and it seems that KZ:M is native resolution, but not all the time.
There's also evidence of a dynamic framebuffer at work, too, which occasionally sees the rendering resolution lowered from 960x544 when the engine is under load. While some iOS and Android games (for example, Riptide GP) allow the use of selectable resolutions - similar to PC games - these changes are manually selected by the user, resulting in a permanent sacrifice in terms of quality, whereas the variable resolution set-up on Vita only sees a temporary downgrade until performance stabilises. Unless our eyes deceive us, Killzone only seems to deploy resolution reductions if the camera is in motion - if still, resolution remains native. This is a neat trick as frame-rate drops are only likely to be noticed in motion, and not in still scenes.
Eurogamer article

Thought that was interesting. I could clearly see the resolution changing whenever Wipeout2048 got too crazy, but I haven't noticed the resolution drop at all during my KZ:M sessions. They've seemed to have masked it really well. Hope more developers use this technique in vita games instead of just dropping the res.

You have no idea how happy this makes me :-D

It's cropped from this image, btw. Edited my post to include the source too :)

This!

I enjoy holding my vita more than anything else nowadays, dual shock3 included

I downloaded the beta late last night but couldn't get into a match at all. Tried dozens of times, it would just disconnect me with an error saying my connection dropped. Once it had me hosting a game but no one ever joined it so I had to cancel a few minutes later.

I imagine I'll have to forward some ports when I get home, what a nuisance. I already have my PS3 on my DMZ, P2P sucks. :P

EDIT: lol, from the official forums, network tips:

Killzone: Mercenary makes connections to other players running Killzone: Mercenary when playing multiplayer games.

For each connection to another player, Killzone: Mercenary makes a connection to them using a port in the following range:

Port 49167-65535 UDP

The PS Vita connection settings application's network test does not test that these ports are open. So, even if you are being reported as NAT Type 2 or 1, you may find these ports are not open on your router.

Unopened ports may lead to failed connection to other players, and the guidelines below may be able to resolve that issue.

Note: If your NAT Type is 3, making these changes may not be enough to get you connecting. If difficulties prevail, you should contact your system administrator or ISP provider for assistance.

Holy shit, now *that's* a port range!

I wish I could connect at work :( for whatever reason I never get into a match. The furthest I get is being kicked out once it starts loading the map.

Glad I can get in at home :)

I sat down to play it for 5 minutes as a break from ironing and played for 3 games haha I really didn't expect to like it as much as I do. The sprint seems a little finikty.

I can't get the hang on that think that you try and hack in the stage. That one where you have to select one of six shapes on the side of the screen. What am I suppose to do?

I'd be up for some proper team play if anyone wants to add me Lee_and_Nomi

The tutorial is in the SP unfortunately.

You have to recognize the two matching keys out of the 6. Tap one of them, then tap the center; then tap the other, then center again.

I would play my Vita A LOT more if I could use my PS3 controller to control my Vita. I'm a competitive gamer so I play lots of CoD/Halo/KZ/Resistance on PS3 and Xbox and I'm very good at maneuvering and shooting. However the Vita controls aren't very good (especially the sticks) and it is really hard for me to be accurate while aiming, plus it seems there is a lot of acceleration with the sticks that I can't turn off. It just really frustrates me when I try to play and I can't be as good as I know I am due to the controls. Also UMvC3 is almost impossible for me to play because the sticks suck, the dpad is too low making it hard/awkward to hold the Vita, I end up pressing too many buttons at once, and I have trouble hitting more than one at a time when I need to. PLEASE LET ME USE MY DUALSHOCK 3 ON MY VITA! I will try the motion aiming thing.

Besides the controls, I'm loving the game. I wish it was more than 4v4 though, I'm used to large maps with 12 players per team. Mercenaries seems to run really good with 4v4 so I wish they would try to squeeze in a couple more players.

Try practicing. :-/

The controls in this game are just perfect.

How can it be perfect if everyone agrees the sticks are worse than the PS3 ones for aiming? :)

The actual controls (how they are mapped) is extremely well done, I didn't even need to look up the button mapping and everything was just where it should be, but these sticks man...

Just lower the X Y sensitivity by 2 notches and max out the gyro. I'm surprised and how well the actually handle now. I've been hitting moving targets with relative ease.

Just had a game end in a draw. It was a back and forth all the time. Ended with 72-72 at the end. I think I gave up the last death or we would have won. :-D

Pretty intense.

Did they make mercenary warfare playable or it's just me having some kind of bug? I'm playing it right now and don't want to quit if it's a bug.

I was curious about that and found this video while browsing GameFAQ's:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkQtUwXhm-0&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Basically:

1) Make a party on the vita (it could just be you in the party)
2) Start the beta and in the multiplayer menu, choose "party match"
3) You'll be in an empty lobby. Just choose "launch game".

(If you notice, the game mode will say "Mercenary Warfare").

That's it! I just tried it and it does work. I got into a game with 3 other people. Mercenary Warfare = Free for All.

You may not get into a full room. The most I've seen is the 3 other people. Let's see what happened when I keep trying. If someone on your friend's list is in a free for all room, they can join you. I just tried this with fellow GAF'er, Drizzt

Pro Tip: Use the Poison Arrow Gun in Interrogator mode.

I have a feeling I'm constantly the only one in my team who makes points in that mode.

I tried it, don't think it is worth it right now as I did at first. You are too weak in an infight. Reload time is a big problem if you don't hit with your first shot and even if you do weapon swtich delay will get you killed with multiple enemies. Rather sneak up on an enemy or shoot his legs.

Not impressed with the weapon balance overall. The M82 is just overpowered. Everything else isn't worth the trouble.

Ok now you're just making shit up and clearly just hating on COD because it's COD. I have never played a COD game where the spawning was even in the same league as bad as this beta.

WELL, that was more DNS changes and port forwarding than I wanted to do, but what the hell I finally was able to connect to a game!

Joined halfway through, and despite this being the first time I've actually used the sticks on my Vita I felt the controls were pretty easy to get into. I was actually surprised at how easy it was to control, although I will turn the speed up a bit next time.

Credible! ;) And damn is this game good looking.

yeah I didn't feel like bothering with all that so I just went the DMZ route. When the beta is over I'll make my PS3 the DMZ host again. But once I did that my connection problem went out the window.

Hah, the only reason I didn't throw my Vita on the DMZ was because it's equally network-incompetent older sibling is already there. ;) I blame Sony's late addition of VOIP and the attendant port hassles.

Man I hope the PS4 doesn't have similar issues. Surely to god they sorted out their underlying p2p port/NAT/upnp problems by now.

Thank you for this.

I was tired of being drug down by teammates.

Ugh, no matter what I do I keep getting the "no network connection to the game host was able to be made" error.

This game is great though.. I need to play now!
