Reggie Fils-Aime on Xbox One/PS4 lineups: "Meh"

Via IGN
During an interview with IGN, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime defended Wii U's value proposition for consumers this Fall.

“It’s all about the games. The competitive systems have announced their launch lineups. I’m allowed to say ‘Meh,’” Fils-Aime said. “I look at our lineup of titles and I feel good about our lineup. We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong. In addition to great titles like Pikmin 3 and Wonderful 101, I feel very good about our lineup, and I feel very good about the value proposition we’re putting out there for the consumer.”

In response, Fils-Aime continued to hammer the point that, in the end, all the consumer cares about is great games and great experiences. “We’ve got cloud technology that we’re delivering with Wii U. Nintendo TV is all cloud-based technology. But the difference is, we don’t talk about the tech. We talk about the experience. We make sure that the consumer has fun with the game experiences that we provide, “ Fils-Aime told IGN. “And so I think as you compare and contrast Nintendo with other players in the space, for us it’s about games, about the fun, about the entertainment value, and not about the tech.”

pfffffffffffffffffffffft.

"We’ve got Zelda. We’ve got Mario. We’ve got Donkey Kong."

Go back 20 years and you'll hear the same thing.

I’m allowed to say ‘Meh,’”
Note that he doesn't actually claim that "Meh" is his own opinion, it's just what Nintendo is ALLOWING him say.

I'm sure he thinks they're totally awesome and intends to buy both day 1, but who at Nintendo would let him say such a thing!? Nobody, that's who.

He's got some cheek talking down other companies launch line ups.

TBH I do feel the same. But this is after-the-drought for the Wii U, versus launch of the new platforms. Won't be the case for much longer after that, and might never be the case again.

I agree with him.

The only decent looking launch game (imo) is Killer Instinct. Next gen launch titles = a big meh.

I doubt Reggie would say that they were amazing. I think that both titles have nice launch lineups. Several high profile 3rd party titles that the masses will eat up, but nothing that will define a generation.

From a first party/exclusives point of view, I think he's right. Then again the Wii U has been out since November so you're damn right it better have some shit on the way.

I do agree on the PS4/One launch software. If I could play some of Nintendo's games on PS4/One hardware I'd be interested. However, I just look at the Wii U hardware, and think "meh".

Gotta do his job, so props for trying.

Their launch lineup was New Super Mario Bros U, Zombie U and Nintendoland, and the same type of horde of third party games Sony and Microsoft are receiving now on PS4 and XB1.

That launch offering is enough for Reggie to swing his balls around? Jesus christ. I'm not saying the launch was bad (although I'm thoroughly fucking through with NSMB and mini-game compilations myself), but I am saying I don't see anything on their launch that indicates they should be particularly prideful either :P

Edit: To say nothing of the like billion months of virtually no games at all, which if Sony and MS can even get two of their big "first year exclusives" titles out in that time will likely by default make it a better and more consistent environment for gaming in the same comparable time frame, especially when you add in indie exclusives. :p

Edit 2: And yes I know he's comparing their launch lineup to the sum total of games they have on Wii U and what they have this fall, but I'd say dissing XB1 and PS4's launch is wrong considering the way their launch was and the way most launches are in general regardless of the platform.

I look at your lineup and I can't find a single game that interests me (not that the PS4 or Xbone has amazing launch lineups either). Try harder, Reggie.

Checking the Wii U 2013 thread, they really do have an impressive line up this Fall. A lot of fun games this holiday season.
