Wii U Games 2013

That video is great because it clearly shows off Wii U's best feature; its exclusive games. Commercials need to move away from glamour shots of models using the gamepad and more towards the game footage porn shots used here.

I'm going to get nostalgic here, but this really reminds me of the old "play it loud" campaign Nintendo had going in the mid 90's. Quick shots of exclusive games, grundge music, and just right up in yo face with a no bull-shit approach to selling games. Stop with the lifestyle crap, Nintendo, and show us cock already.

I just love that they threw X in there. Cannot wait for the next info dump for that one. Hopefully the next time we hear about it will coincide with it finally getting an official and final NAME!

I think for the 720p television idea, aren't there some televisions where you can decrease the resolution? I think there are some that do it automatically if I am not mistaken about them existing.

Go 720p.

There are barely any 1080p Wii U games (only a handful known ATM), and Wii games look more better on Wii U.

Sadly there are only an EXTREME few native 1280x720 HDTVs, you'll have to settle with a 1366x768 (who the hell made these standard?!), and try to get one that allows overscan adjustment, since Wii U doesn't take it into account but Wii mode does.

It's not terrible and I got a good 32" Philips set for $200 after price matching, but the lack of an overscan is the only nag.

1. Techically speaking, yes, Wii games would looks better in a 720p screen vs a 1080p one.
The difference for Wii U games would be minimal though.
2. Wii games definitely look better through HDMI. They look crisper, colors are more natural since the signal is uncompressed. Not a big difference of course but still worth it.
3. Why would you buy the same games twice if you already know you'll transfer over the Wii VC games? Anyway, since both are literally the same thing, I think there's a pop up warning saying you already have the game. Asking you if you want to overwrite it (not sure about this one tho)

Thanks for the responses. I bought a 42" Samsung 720p Plasma a few years ago but I let my family use that as the living room TV because the TV console is built into a corner of the wall so good viewing angles are a much. I currently use a 32" Samsung 1080p LED TV in my room. I need something lighter than a plasma because it sits on top of my TV console made for a CRT (it matches the shelves in my room) where my CRT still resides. I just wanted to confirm my thoughts on what was the best way to view games considering I already have a 720p set (plasma is the way to go anyway). I have my Wii set up in the living room in order to have the space for DDR dance mats.

@ Alistair Roo

Yeah I kept rewriting that statement to make it clearer but I see it's still kind of confusing. Let me give you an example. I have a bunch of saves and a few VC games like Paper Mario and Mario 64 on my original Wii. On my Wii U I decide to play a different set of Wii games than my original Wii and thus have Wii save files. I buy The Last Blade 2 for Wii VC on my Wii U. If I decide later to transfer my Wii data to Wii U does it overwrite the stuff already in Wii mode on my Wii U? Will I lose those game saves and The Last Blade 2? See I currently am not sure I'll transfer my Wii to Wii U. I only own a scant few VC and WiiWare games and none I want to transfer over. Most save files can just be transferred anyway by SD card. I still need my original Wii for GC ports so I can play DDR games (I have all five for the system and two mats). Also some people like Brawl with a GC controller. I also plan to mod my original Wii. There are several foreign games I want to play (Unlimited Cruise 1+2, Fatal Frame 2+4, Disaster and Captain Rainbow) and I already own some. I also plan to install some Brawl character mods too.

As you can see at the moment I don't think I'm going to do a system transfer. I still want The Last Blade 2 on my Wii U as it's a fighting game and for the most part the Wii U will be the console I play most of my multiplayer Wii games on. I just wanted to know that if I change my mind it would overwrite what was already on the Wii U's Wii mode.

So X confirmed for 2014 in Europe? Simultaneous release?

Yeah it's a 2014 release for both west and Japan. No word how simultaneous it is.

For what it's worth it has been said that the game is being localized at the same time with development so it could mean a quick release over the globe.

I usually don't like placeholder names but I wouldn't care if they ended up calling it X.

I know they won't but would people here be against that???

That 2014 bit is old news though. We knew that since E3, I believe.

There were rumblings that Nintendo is already working on the localization alongside the main development this time so a simultaneous release should be in the cards (or at least something we're having with Pikmin and TW101 now where they're a few weeks apart).

Yeah I know this is what it does in single player. I just wasn't sure if the gamepad player would still get to control a regular platforming character in co-op, or if they were relegated to playing Murphy 100% of the time.
In co-op the GamePad player can play as a regular platforming character as long as Murphy is not needed. It's not like in NSMBU where as soon as you play with 2 or more people the GamePad can only be used to assist.

So I just got my Wii U up and running (finally).

I have an old HDTV with 1366 x 768 resolution that is HD ready (meaning it accepts 1080p and I presume downscales).

I notice that the view I see on the HDTV is a crop of the actual screen presented by the WiiU. Like an overscan. I also notice that there is a n adjustment in the WiiU menu to make the screen smaller or bigger to fit your TV.

Ok, so I thought overscan was a TV hardware thing. Why does it exist on HDTVs? And how is this a Wii U issue? I must be fundamentally misunderstanding what's going on here.

Also, what actually happens when I decrease the screen size (seeing as the WiiU must be adjusting it's out put)? Is it cropping the 1080P resolution and outputting a smaller window within the 1080P?

Anyway, I have Nintendoland and also ZombiU. I'll try them out over time.

Oh, just one last quick question - if you don't link a Nintendo Club Id, do you still get the wii premium points when purchasing on teh e-shop?

EXPLAIN PLEASE!!!

EXPLAIN PLEASE!!!

Pretty sure it was just in the settings section on the WiiU.

Like under Display or something.

edit: looks like a feature added in APril:

Still doesn't explain what it's doing. I always figured overscan shouldn't exist on HDTVs, since the resolution/aspect ratio is an exact match for the TV, and a TV knows what to do with an input and its own resolution.

Then again, maybe it scales to acertain point and crops. But then, as I mentioend, what is the WiiU doing when it adjusts picture size? obviously, it's still a 1080P output, so is it scaling the picture to a smaller window within a 1080P frame?

Yeah I found it, WOW, completely missed it! O_O

Now my crop troubles are over! :D Thanks!

Yes, Club Nintendo has nothing to do with the Deluxe Digital Promo.

Good! Now go allow Friend Requests via Miiverse on your profile (if you haven't already)!

It has no games, they said! I bought last week W101, Splinter Cell Blacklist and Disney Infinity starter pack and now I find out/remember that Rayman Legends is out this week? The wallet is hiding in a corner and I'm asking myself when I have time to play all this?

And I still have 3 Pikmin co-op enemy missions to platinum ...

That "exclusively on wii u" trailer was great, and was even missing some gem (as MH3 Ultimate or Zombi U), not even considering the mupltiplats available and the eshop goods.

there are still projection HDTVs out there (whether DLP rear or front projection). So in cases where the projector is slightly spilling over the edge of the screen this option is available.

So I found out yesterday my TV is 1080p native even though it was advertised to be 720p.

The proof was first 1) The pixels were too small and I did numerous tests like using a 1280x720 image I made, no matter how small I scaled the image, the one pixel long line still looked like it was a few pixels big up close. 2) I used my near dead 360's resolution optimization ability, went 1080p, and I already did it with my former 1366x768 TV and it went to 1360x768.

So thanks Philips, you gave me a 1080p TV for $200! LOL

I have NO clue if I magically got the only model with a 1080p screen accidentally put into the TV, or if it's a mistake with the people who put the specs there, but hey I'll take it! XD

My regular HDTV has overscan, lol.

Just wondering what the wiiU is actually doing to resize...is it maintaining a 1080p output, but reducing the presented area as a window within that?

didn't know where else to put this:

It appears this is what the final Wii U devkits look like:

(still shot taken fromt he Mysterious Cities of Gold kickstarter pitch video)

Pretty much like the Wii devkits which also had that green faceplate. Seems to be the first public appearance of a final WiiU kit.

I'd buy that.

Does anyone know if 3 TB hard drives work with the system? I saw one at a good price at costco but I haven't opened it yet and don't know if I should return it.

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wiiu/en_na/external_usb_devices.jsp

Is there a maximum size for external storage devices used with Wii U?

If the Wii U has the most recent system update installed, it will be able to recognize a storage device of any size, but 2TB will be the maximum amount of storage capacity that can be used. Any extra capacity in the storage device beyond the 2TB will not be accessible via the Wii U.

What do they mean by dedicated power source? My basic is running out of space, so I was thinking about getting a hard drive, but now I realize that I'm rather uninformed about the whole concept. How would I set this up?
