FC Copenhagen ban fans with 'foreign names' from Champions League games

How exactly does one go about proving which team they support?

They are shown a photo of Brøndby and if their blood pressure rises they are given the go ahead.

They just have to confirm it verbally over the phone. Big fucking deal. They are having their tickets temporarily suspended (which means it's still reserved) and told they can buy a ticket for the away section instead if they support the other team. If not they can also just tell to the ticket company when they are called up that they are in fact Copenhagen supporters.

While the club hasn't handled the problem in the most elegant way the fact remains that home and away supporters mustn't be placed together. While the club could deny away supporters access on match day that would surely cause chaos.

Most of the people whining on Facebook and in Danish media are Galatasaray supporters. And quite frankly, by playing the race card they are showing their bad intentions. This is a security issue and the concern goes both ways. Not all FCK supporters are angels.

Even if there was no ill intention, they deserve to be ridiculed and possibly sued or fined to hell and back. You can't discriminate or even "check" on the basis of family names, that's just fucking retarded.

I say we should ban FC Copenhagen from the Champions League. How about that?

if they are too afriad of Real and Juvi fans, then they just give up

Pathetic trash journalism and as always lots of people jumping to conclusions, goal.com is on level with the dailymail is shittyness. Here's my response from the football thread.

So lets get the facts straight :

Last year when we played Stuttgart a lot of German supporters had gotten tickets for the Copenhagen sections, which resulted in quite a lot of bad things during the match. This resulted in fines and public criticism from Uefa to Copenhagen not doing enough to prevent this.

So people who now bought their tickets and sounds like they support the opposition team has been "temporarily cancelled" which means all of them will be contacted at latest today, to confirm they are actually not just a random Gala or Juve fan trying to get into other sections, of course that isn't ideal but when Uefa has very harshly told the club to do better at separating the supporters it better be done. Of course Danish trash newspapers decides to make a big fucking deal of this and I guess now some English BS media has decided to jump on it too?

No one has been denied tickets because of their names, the few ones that had to be contacted now to be sure they weren't supporters of the other team even got their damn tickets, they just got an email saying what i explained above.

This was something which was also not done before the draws were made. So anyone could have bought the tickets then (a ticket package of all 3 games), but when the draws were made they decided to do this to try and avoid a situation like last year with the germans. All you have to do is still pick up your phone or if you miss the call, call into the ticket service thing yourself, cause the tickets are still reserved for you.

On top of that, if you bought the tickets for the games before the draw was made (which you could) there was no checking up on names or anything like that, it's purely to avoid other fans getting into the Copenhagen stands which we have been warned by the UEFA from before... and the tickets are still reserved for you, just have to get it confirmed you're not a supporter for the other team.
Read this post people.

Yeah good luck with that. It's Uefa that told us to tighten up the security with this in the first place.

LOL this is so fucked up and surreal I thought it was fake news at first. wtf???

Read my post explaining it. It's a very misinformed article and with some things, down right wrong.

Why do you have to give your name to buy tickets to a sporting event?

I guess I can understand if you're buying them online but what if you go to the box office and pay in cash?

You need to give your name, which team your a fan of (wtf?), and based on these factors are assigned only to a designated area of the stadium?

Wow.

Uhm because of security? This thread is getting dumber and dumber by the minute. Have you ever seen hooligans or know anything about football history? This is Galatasarays hools http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dPJGlJbdao if you really need some video.

If we (as in Copenhagen supporters) wants to even go to a Copenhagen match away from our home stadium, we have to have a special "supporter card" that we need to scan in before the match and that needs to match our tickets, so people who are banned from going to games because of violence and such stays away...

Pretty sure the only way to buy the CL tickets is through the internet or through the phone anyway.

That you as a supporter of the away team can only be in one section is not just common, pretty sure the clubs are demanded to do that by law, as fights will otherwise happen like shown above all the time. It's common fucking sense not having the two opposition supporter groups mixed and done at every decently sized football match.

Jesus Christ @ having to seperate the fucking fans for fear of violence. Been to a lot of sports games in my life, never seen anything like that. Been just fine cheering for the Chiefs Royals and WhiteSox (back when I was in Chicago) without having to worry about opposing fans bashing me over the head, lol.

Not a good look for that sport at all.

People are very passionate about their sports in some countries, both for the better and many times the worse, not just football. For example, basketball in Greece : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WcvAOpnnMK0

Good luck mixing the fans in such a place. It's support to the team and war against the other teams. Wouldn't want fans mixed anyway, would completely destroy the atmosphere at games.

Redskins fans vs Eagles fans

Don't you have to give an address when you buy ticket, either directly, or indirectly through your credit card? If security is such an issue, why don't they only allow residents to buy home-half tickets? Going by name is super racist.

Because there's lots of Juve, Real and Gala fans in Denmark? Funnily enough quite a few of the people who are acting as victims of racism turns out to actually be supporting the other clubs, which is exactly the kind of people the club was hoping to catch.

Just a quick look on Copenhagens FB page and the people complaining shows stuff like that above. Next time at least remove it from your FB, fool.

I really don't get it. I can't imagine a Toronto resident, who's a fan of Montreal going to a Toronto game and getting into a fight in the stands. That's such a weird idea.

Even so, why would someone's name indicate what club they support? That's crazy. I wouldn't see a black dude, and be like, "well, I guess you like our basketball team more than our hockey team."

So basicaly, they don't want away fans in the home section? Sounds pretty fair to me.

So they proceed to lump all those funny foreign names in the same bag including a guy with an Iranian name because that's basically the same as Turkey right.

Never heard of football hooligans? Shit can get ugly, and if away fans get in the wrong section it can get even worse.

I don't get hooligans. I know they exist, but it's baffling to me. Also, names wouldn't be half the indicator residence would if you want to go down that road.

what the actual...

Someone add this to the OP.

Except he could just call in and confirm he was a Copenhagen supporter. What he could also have done was buy his tickets before the draw... and not directly after, which is the only people who has been questioned based on name, not banned like the title of the thread says, it's basically a "Hey, you sure you don't want to go to the away section?".

While it's pretty normal to restrict away fans to the away section, the methods used by FCK are a bit weird to be quite honest. In Germany, if away fans are expected to buy tickets in other sections, you usually can only buy tickets if you have bought tickets before and/or you're living near the home team's city. Additionally, fans in away jerseys aren't let in in home sections. I've never heard of name-checking before.

But anyway, it's of course not racism what's happening here. That's only the case if you really want to misinterpret the situation.

SPORTS!!!!! Here in the US fights happen all the time in the stands at NFL games. People that worship sports tend to be assholes.

Neither do I. Well I do get what some people get out of it, it's just something that they should keep far away from football. But I certainly get separating supporters of teams, not just for security measures. It's the you vs them mentality in football, especially when it comes to life long rival teams, you sing slanderous songs about their team and their supporters and you try and throw them off their game, football is all about feeling and I would never go to a football match where we had to sit still in our seats and eat corndogs.

Oh I don't disagree it's weird to no name checking and certainly not fool proof, but it's not the only thing done either. Of course the club won't allow people showing up in other jerseys in. There's lots of people living in Copenhagen supporting the other clubs though, that is the problem.

Problem was with the Stuttgart supporters last year that they weren't wearing any Stuttgart clothing or anything like that, which then makes it incredible hard to deny them access at the gates.

Disgusting.

The chant certainly is if the translation is correct. Brilliant stage for a basketball match though and many of the actual players enjoys that kind of atmosphere. This is Dame N'Doye a year ago in Copenhagen, he got our ultras logo tattood on him.

and this is the ultras in question http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QF1AbOW4PiI (also notice the small section all the supporters are on! :p )

Nothing on the level of the full blown riots like in Futbol.

I think maybe having the home/away sections in Futbol exacerbates the problems. In some sports, rivalries like NY Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox, the rivalries are so fierce that a visiting fan would (most of the time) not wear their team colours. And because all the opposing fans are scattered and fairly anonymous, they can't really get a riot going.

In North America, it's not uncommon to see fights between two supporters. Alcohol and tailgating culture probably have more to do with stand violence than what team you support.

jokes on him when he gets traded

jokes on him when he gets traded

He did leave the club like half a year after, he went around and said goodbye to the supporters with tears in his eyes. ;)

He's a legend at the club though and will always be loved, think all supporters understood that he wanted to make big time cash in Russia instead of playing for 1/5 of the wages in Copenhagen when he got a whole family to support in Senegal.

lol @ all the reactionary moral grandstanding posts from people that didnt read WoodenLung's post.

Football hooligans are a real problem, and so is a threat from the UEFA to ban your team if you don't do something about it.

In college they do... although fans aren't restricted to those areas.

Just the student sections are restricted that way though. Any ticket sold through the ticket office is available to anyone who wants it.

Though for the big name high profile programs, a lot of the prime seats are claimed by season ticket holders who have to give quite sizable donations to even be able to get tickets, which makes it less feasible for a bunch of opposing fans to get tickets.

"We are fully aware that everyone will not agree, but discrimination it is not."

I gotta agree. Condemning every foreigner on the planet because a different foreigner did something bad 13 years ago totally isn't discrimination.

And how exactly do you define "foreign names?"

Because I can't envision any dudes called John Smith or Chad Whiteman being banned from shit.

Sucks for people called Mohammed Bin-Saddam Hussein Laden Al-Gaddafi Mohammed and no-one else.

well looking at their draw, I would think if your name is Alonzo DiVincenzo or Sergio Abreu, you're going to have a hard time getting tickets

Yeah, so banning people because their names sound foreign is a proper solution, right?

That's just the thing. Do football hooligans from other nationalities not exist? You could easily have an Anglo, Danish or other "safe" name and be a Real, Juve or and Galatasaray fan.

Not to mention: what if a miracle happens and FC Copenhagen make it through to the next stage of the European Cup or fumble into the Europa League? Will they continue this "screening" for each round of the competition they make it to?

I get what they are trying to do, but the way they made their selection is a bit strange. There must be a better way.
