The second one is slightly modified. There was a tip of an ass-ugly reflection messing with that nice windshield.[/QUOTE]

Dude, did we play the same Most Wanted? I feel like your shots always end up looking way better than the game was even capable of. Those in game car models are crazy detailed for what the game is.

Also, that straight cut DoF line is silly

Haha, I'll take that as a compliment :P
The models are actually incredibly competent when you get down to it. Like you said, for what it is, super high-poly models were kinda out of the question, but all the detail is there where you need it, and the topology of the models is (usually) excellent. Save for being not entirely well coded for PC performance over 30fps, I think its one of the most cleverly-built racing games in recent time. Its all very dramatic.

That being said, I really want to stray a bit away from car screenshots all the time. But I'm in a groove with MW.

As for that DOF, yeah its silly. I found a way to make the game uses its menu screen DOF, but the focal distance is like.. 1 foot, and its a hard line. I think that shot is about as nice as I could make the effect look :P

And now I just looked up stuff about NFS: Rivals, and discovered that it is open world as well, which I thought it wasn't. I am le pumped. Yay frostbite.

If you are gonna go all the way with resolution, you should go all the way with image quality and just use PNGs. The jpeg quality ruined those shots.

It was entirely meant as a compliment, but re-reading it I can totally see how it would be confusing. You find ways to make cars look better than I ever thought video game cars could look!

True but my connection suck for upload O.o

p.s. All png now.

You should read this little write up. There are instructions at the bottom on how to pump them out with good quality.

It was missing something....

That's totally aces! Got a great laugh outta me

What the... I just found one of my screenshots uploaded to reddit.

I wouldn't be surprised if Reddit had a screenshot sub that was dedicated to swiping screenshots from the threads here and Dead End Thrills or something.

But yeah, it can be amazing to see how far some of the screens from here go. I still see my Dolphin screens of Wind Waker showing up in random places.

I remember seeing the panorama's I made in Halo 3/Reach's theater mode showing up in the wildest places, too. I don't mind, but shooting a PM my way sure would've been nice.

EDIT: Oh look, same guy uploaded one of Darkdeus shots too.

They host the screens on imgur which is fitting since their standards are as appalling as Reddit is as a community.

Yea that's the second time this month. Someone posted all of my dark souls shots as well but at least gave me credit.

I also can't stand how reddit doesn't upvote anything but imgur shots. Most of the people don't understand downsamling either, even when you carefully explain it too them : (

Reddit is a fucking shitstain community that steals left and right, re-hosts the images and pass them off as their own.

My Xbox One GIF exploded over there but I never really noticed because he rehosted it and gave no credit, until I stumbled on it one day. Then I googled his link and saw it on like 50 sites.

I used to post to reddit as well, but when I finally got induced here, I sort of never looked back. Posting screenies there meant either giving mod support, explaining I didn't use Photoshop in offensive PM's, or telling people that downsampling does have its merits. And then there's the 'there's no game but the vanilla game' fanatics.

Reddit is good for getting the word out on something to a massive number of people... assuming it doesn't get downvoted. Actually conversing with them though? Not recommended.

Also, explaining downsampling on reddit is sorta like explaining electrical engineering to a 4 year old.

As for the screenshot theft... well, it's just a fact of life over there. For some reason they think "karma" means something. And you get more karma if you upload an impressive image but say NOTHING about it.

I didn't even know about DeadEndThrills until someone re-upped a Skyrim screenshot of his and posted it on reddit. I went into the comments to learn about the details, and someone pointed out that the source was DET. Which lead me to learning about downsampling. That was 2011. What took GAF so long to get a thread going in 2013? xD

I've got some great news for you bud!

I was joking :P

I like the "awesome super high resolution pc screenshot thread." Nice name.

Also nice to go back and time and see all the fussing about rules and such :) Wish I knew about all the super awesome image quality techniques back in 2011 when I had absolutely crappy hardware incapable of using it so I could be blown away :) Now it's just kinda.... standard. The bullshots thread not getting much love these days... but I see why. You can find fantastic image quality and good composition on every page here.

Shit, I'll be honest, I still don't understand downsampling.

It's not difficult to wrap your head around, really, if you don't go into the various techniques to do it. It all boils down to running your game at a higher resolution than the image you show off. For instance 4K downsampling means running the game at a resolution with somewhere close to 4000 horizontal pixels (e.g. 3840x2160) and then either:

  1. using driver software to set up a custom resolution that is higher than your native desktop size and then squeeze the large image to your desktop (mostly at 1080p or 1200p), employing a bilinear filter algorithm. Depending on how you get your screenshot, you'll either end up with the fully rendered shot, or the bilinear downsampled 1080p shot.
  2. using bespoke software like SRWE or widescreenfixer to run the game in a window of possibly any size or aspect ratio, and then resizing the window to fit to your desktop, while removing the borders. Your screenshooting program of choice will then get the fully rendered shot, so you can downsample it offline.

Offline downsampling is just taking a large shot and resizing it down to for instance 1080p. In doing so, you'll lose jaggies and get a much better looking image. There are various downsampling algorithms, each with their strengths and weaknesses. I swear by Lanczos3 and sometimes Lanczos2 (although that tends to oversharpen gradients leading to artificial banding), but bicubic sharpened is also popular.

So in sum: run game at large resolution, and squeeze it to a smaller size to gain in image quality, either real-time for gameplay anti-aliasing, or offline for smexy screenshots.

Pretty much what I figured, deriving from the term. :lol Thanks.
