Random Person's Tumblr says anonymous Sega Rep says Yakuza 5 is never happening

No surprise there. I'm still salty over what they did with Valkyria Chronicles.

Getting really hard to care about my former favorite companies these days.

Sega, ffs. I hope that that guy is clueless and he's reporting just what he heard.
I can't believe they still don't give a fuck.

Anyway, we should all tweet @giocorsi.

Not like they wasted money on a experiment lately on WiiU port...ohhhh

Release digital to reduce costs heck even release the HD collection to create a larger fanbase you already got the subs for it done.

I wonder, is this something that @giocorsi could handle? He's apparently the guy to go to with random ideas, and, he runs the team that got Borderlands 2 on Vita rolling.

Yeah, let's tweet this guy.
Who knows.

250k outside Japan

It's low, but they could at least sell a download only version of the 5, with no english dub (only subs)

That is more than I expected.... but where did you get this number from?

And yet theres a fanbase for shit like this:

Fuck SEGA.

Yep.

Stop scapegoating successful franchises for the failure of others. If the series made money there would be no issue.

When they have a game that might appeal to non Yakuza fans, since it looks like a current gen game.

They decided not release it.

So many ways for them to lose less or no money at all (Digital only or kickstarter) and they dont even try. At least an official statement would have been nice.

Yeah bring some more WiiU Yakuza ports and Hatsune Miku and Sonic games.

The story is one of the most important parts of the game, and not being able to read any of the item descriptions or anything else would make the game far less enjoyable.

Maybe, but I've played all of them aside from the first in Japanese and for me, the gameplay is the most important part.

Thus, hating on Sega is silly when they just don't want to lose money.

It's not so silly to hate on them for localizing Dead Souls when it was obviously gonna bomb.

They could have skipped it, localized Y5, and THEN concluded that the series wasn't profitable in the west. :P

So step out of the way finally and let XSEED or Atlus do it without any fucking ridiculous license fees.

Sega West can merrily fuck off to its Euro-PC outings and Sonic only, and I can continue to enjoy the Sega of old through companies that know how to budget translations and ensure they sell enough to stay in the black.

fuck you sega i bought all the other yakuza games, even number 3 which had the glaring omissions

fuck off.

and yeah, loli kawaii moe uguu~ hatsune miku is being sold here to add insult to injury

Is this because Dead Souls did so poorly in the West? Are they looking at its poor numbers and thinking we don't want a Yakuza game? I don't know about anyone else but the reason I passed on it was because it wasn't a traditional Yakuza game. If they released Y5 I'd pre-order the shit out of it in an instant.
Exactly what happened to Valkeria Chronicles.
VC2 on psp killed the franchise in the west stone dead.

Nope, I'm implying that the fans are not enough to make this worth bringing over. Sega is a business, they want to make money, Yakuza obviously doesn't make enough money to cover the costs it takes to localize and produce it over seas.

Thus, hating on Sega is silly when they just don't want to lose money.

It sucks for the fans, but it's the nature of business.

This is not true. Yakuza makes enough money to cover everything and more, the problem is that big publishers only care about big profits, so if the game doesn't give them a big profit they just don't care, this is exactly the definition of shitting on your fanbase. if they give Yakuza to a smaller publisher you can bet they will be happy to handle it. This is the same situation as VC3.

Namco is actually fostering the western Tales of fanbase after shitting on it for years.

Given the success of carpe fulgur, falcom, konami and now mighty no.9, I think yakuza and other more niche titles could really do well on pc. Given how much money sega makes from FM and TW, I hope it's not too long before they come to their senses.

Goodnight, sweet prince.

I seriously doubt they can't make money doing the above

Well, they have their P&L statements and you have your gut.

Y3 sold better than Y4, which sold better than DS. There's been a downward trend before DS released. DS selling even worse didn't help any either, regardless of it being a mainline game or not.

Back on topic: did you get a name from the person that told you this? Only two people that were working the Sega booth are in a position to be able to make this claim and I certainly never received an answer this blunt from either of them.

Lol no.

The private data numbers from the NPD are like 10x less than that. Just look at the monthly sales data, they're available at the sales threads. You'll only see the units sold on the first month, but it's enough to form a very clear picture. And the picture is: Yakuza doesn't sell.

in the 90's if there was a japanese game you wanted to play, you bought a japanese system and then imported the game. You figured out the game through irc and game faqs.

That's what I thought.
250k would have been a miracle success.

"How dare Sega not want to burn money for no benefit to themselves! How can they possibly know that Yakuza games don't sell in the west when they've only localized five of them before? Fuck Sega for clearly not giving a shit even though there are obviously enough people there who give a shit that they localized fucking Dead Souls."

The Miku game fanbase is bigger than the Yakuza west fanbase? A crowd at a gaming expo doesn't mean much.

How about the localization costs for a Miku game are a tiny percentage of a Yakuza game, especially given Yakuza 5 is reported to have double the content of a typical Yakuza game.
