Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn |OT2| Use a security token. Seriously.

I posted yesterday that I lost my Security Token. I raised the support ticket immediately and... I haven't received a single thing in reply yet. Kinda saddened by that. I was really hoping to play tonight. I'll give them another 24 hours and re-raise it. :/

In the game, I have this thought running over and over in my mind -- I really don't like that FATEs and FATE parties are *the* number 1 best option for EXP. I think they should be good EXP, absolutely. I think a solo-oriented player should be able to use them to relatively painlessly get to cap. FATE parties aren't co-ordinated after all, they're just free-for-all invite-anyone group-ups.

What I'd like is for the best way to gain EXP to be something a bit more focused. Hell, the obvious option would be to throw back to FFXI players and make simple EXP parties get huge EXP gains if they find a good camp and keep up chains. It wouldn't detract from the convenience of FATEs, but it would at least offer an alternative to people who wanted to play as a group. That kind of play should be rewarded more than the braindead ability spam of FATE-parties.

curious if blackmages are any fun. Can't stand mages in mmos that can't cast while moving, and spell cast times are pretty damn long in this game, even for the fast ones.

Tera and dragon's nest had fun mages.

I know how you feel, especially in FF14 for some reason it feels like my thaumaturge should be able to cast when moving. It's putting me off continuing the class and I'm only level 14. Soo squishy as well.

Think I'll change my class to one of the melee. Can anyone comment on how easy it is to tank on the PS3?

So people don't use normal exp parties in FFXI anymore? That's weird... and a little saddening.

Despite the grind being a bit too much (not to mention mechanics being pretty poorly designed), I think the structure is pretty neat (meaning you could use it more meaningful content instead of grinding on world mobs if you wanted to, and make it require shorter session) and promotes community. I'm not at all a fan of "game begins at cap". Then again, this game won't have much of a community, so no real point thinking about it now.

Are there any good character leveling guides available? I'm terrified that I am going to points into the wrong attribute.

There is a respec option...but it's expensive.

I wouldn't sweat it too much though, just stick to the primary attributes for your class.

How do you scale the UI? Can you scale individual elements?

Go into HUD in your main menu, select a UI element and hit CTRL+Home on PC or R3 on PS3 to cycle through 120%, 80% and back to 100% size.

As far as UI discussion goes, how many people have split chat into two areas? I don't think I can go back. I have a chat-scroll on the right for fight/loot/craft updates and the chat-scroll on the left is mainly for FC/social talk.

No, that died when Abyssea hit. I actually restarted FFXI a short time after Abyssea had landed and joined a linkshell which advertised itself as 'old school' and focused on enjoying the established party spot grind to max level, established as a direct alternative to the newly established Abyssea zones and book-grinds. I lasted two months and quit because everyone in the linkshell eventually succumbed to book-parties in Gusgen -> Crawlers Nest -> etc etc, or just leeching as walking loot-bags from 30+.

It wasn't for me.

Lovely, thanks, I'll play around with it tonight.

I also have my chat boxes split the same way. Spam/general chat/loot info on the right; LS/replies/FC (when I join one, I guess) on the left. This way, I don't outright ignore general chatter, and don't have it spamming my primary communication window.

Blows my mind how arrogant and conceited some people are already.

Guy sitting in Ul'Dah shouting about how he's "sick of fucking noobs in this fucking game."

The game hasn't even been officially released for 2 weeks yet. I understand if we're bitching at level 50 players that don't know how to play their job but it's unfathomable to me that it's already to the point where people are chastising new players in a brand new game.

Just hope that section of the community doesn't stick. Maybe they'll disappear after the trial period.

It will probably regress to this once populations die down a bit (or, at the worst, roving "serious" parties hunting FATES and everything in between.) They're just so broken now because there's a large population AoE-zerging so hard that everything dies before it's a threat.

Anyone that takes the game that seriously isn't fun to play with at anyway. He seem like the type that screams while doing a event, and threaten to eat people's babies, and slit people's throats.

To which I reply,

/sh I'll take noobs over arrogant and elitist dipshits any day. Grow up.

Then hope that the region joins in with your righteous correction and (politely) shreds the shit out of the fucker in /sh.

It wasn't for me.

So I guess old FFXI is dead and buried at this point. Abyssea/level cap raise/Magian trials was a good time to quit I suppose. I wonder if I'd be able to recreate CoP level caps with private servers at some point. Something that interests me.

So I'm not gonna be home this weekend and I had a question. I'll be on a different IP and pc than what I'm currently using and I was wondering if I'll even be able to login from another pc? Reason I ask is cause in beta when I gave a friend my login info, it just locked the account and I had to unlock it but he couldn't login from a different IP. So is that something that is now changed or will I not be able to play?

I don't think you got a reply.

Your character's details will be available from any PC or PS3 that has a valid copy of FFXIV installed. You just log in with your own info and it will pull your character data. You will lose all of your HUD, MACRO, etc information though. You can find it in the FFXIV file in your 'My Documents -> My Games' folder, so in theory you could zip that info and email it to yourself or stick it in a USB stick or something.

Yeah, I guess it just annoyed me a little bit more than it should have.

I think it probably stems from all the horror stories I keep hearing about level 50 groups and chastising players new to level 50 content.

I'm not worried about it though. The community has been pretty fantastic so far in my experience. Every duty finder group I've been in has been, for the most part, civil, patient and easy going. I know not everyone's been so lucky but even still, I'm confident those types of people will be the dominant personalities when it comes to end game over the next few years.

Way more good people out there than bad.

If by 'old' you mean heading to the jungle at 25, maybe hitting Garlaige at 30-ish or going for beetles and dhalmels in the desert, blah blah, yeah, it's dead for the most part. That doesn't really happen now. It's a game with a fast-track to end-game. Sort of understandable, given the age of the game.

I should add as an addendum to my post, I don't really blame the people in that linkshell I joined for switching to Abyssea-EXP. The difference in EXP/hr between book-burns and Abyssea-leeching was outrageous compared to the established party route. It just spoke volumes to me that a linkshell which advertised itself as committed to the old style would flip so quickly to the new fast-track.

I just struggled with it. Option A: 200 hours of grinding in an engaging 6-person party setting where my role matters. Option B: 50 hours of grinding in a mindless 18-person alliance setting where you could easily AFK and people wouldn't even notice.

Option B felt like more of a grind to me.

EDIT: And to bring this indulgent self-commentary in line with the topic of FF14, I do genuinely worry that the FATE-party grind is comparable to option B in the above scenario.

I've found that tanks are particularly bad in this game. It's frustrating when you're trying to get an instance done, especially later in the game, and people have absolutely no clue what they're doing. At least ask a forum or do some research on how to play your class before joining a party with three other people and wasting their time. Maybe I'm just an ass.

Finally got level 50.

I fixed the issue by adding an authenticator.

Just wondering-do you communicate with these tanks?

When I get a tank and see right off that they're handling basic business, I start asking them if they have x,y, or z move, if it's their first time, etc. Sometimes people just need a push, and part of the fun of MMOs (for some people) is communicating and learning things in game.

If you have a bad tank or a bad healer or a bad DD, please take the time to politely talk to them, non-caustically, and just ask can you try this or that or the other. Help them. You have restarts and a very generous time-limit for these dungeons. Interact, please.

EDIT: Amen Labor. :]

man didn't know aurum vale is prereq for amdrapor keep zzz

oh well at least i'll level my mining while waiting

for mining do i move on to level 10 nodes at level 10 or 5?

Well, if someone is in the later levels of the game and they have no clue what they're doing then I can understand it. If the basics of combat and their class are completely lost on someone at level 50 then there's probably no hope for them.

But I don't think being brand new to a level 50 dungeon warrants being treated like crap which it seems like some people are doing. And that's not directed at you or anyone in particular. It's just the vibe I've gotten listening to some people recount what's happened for them in a few groups.

I don't know, maybe I'm just more patient than the average person.

Anyone else still getting error 90k? My connection seems to be fine, the game doesn't lag at all. It just decides to stop and kick me off with that error.

All the time. The last one decided to tell me off, the one before that said I should be standing on top of him so that he could pick up adds (I'm a healer) and the one before that never responded. I try to be nice, but I lose patience at higher levels.

I agree, new content is a different story It's just the guys who have no clue what they're doing later in the game that get to me. Then, when I try to help, I get yelled at. Makes me wonder how they made it that far to begin with. :o

Doing my story missions, at the first dungeon. Been sitting here for 10 minutes waiting for a party. This kind of sucks.

What's your class? The DD/DPS classes will have a rougher time in the Duty Finder. Join a Free Company if you haven't already -- this will give you a (hopefully) friendly group whop will help you through the party-required content. Otherwise, consider checking the 'Join Duty In Progress' box in the Duty Finder window. Selecting all the EJDF options will also speed up selection but I don't advise doing this for the obvious reason of: this is an MMO and communication is nice.

Lol-in those cases yeah, you're getting stuck with some bad ones. I actually had an interesting time the other night, doing Haukke for the first time as an arcanist. The tank would just run into a group of mobs and start auto attacking, so it was hard to see which one he was attacking without getting right next to him. He didn't use any aoe enmity abilities, so the conjurer was constantly getting chased (the conjurer only used cure and medica for about half of the dungeon, while in crusader stance, but that's another tale), and the dragoon tried to tell him there were enough keys to open all of the doors, but he insisted that there weren't. He constantly kept calling us idiots and spamming "ffs" until I basically took over healing duty from the conjurer while still doing decent dps until i had the chance to tell the conjurer to turn off crusader stance.

DPS wait times are long-I actually leveled my marauder to 15 while waiting for Sastasha as a DPS lol

You won't get level 10 nodes showing up at level 5. They'll pop at Lv 6. Same goes for every node from here on out. Move to the next zone when you are at NodeLevel+1. You'll claw your eyes out if you try a Level 20 gather at Lv16 though. Use your Gathering Log. Try to keep to no more than two levels below the item you're targeting. Even this will be pretty brutal. Keep your gear up to date. Indulge in Leves.

It was so bizarre playing today, first time logging in since the fixes.

Straight into Ultros with no queue, duty finder matching me so fast I was caught off guard. Usually I'd craft while waiting for it to find me a team, had to scramble right back into my lancer gear! Only exhaustion got me to log off, I'd happily have played all night. Eastern Thanalan is achingly beautiful.

Had my first experience of an utterly clueless tank. Team kept giving instructions and everyone was very patient but I don't think they even looked at the chat box.

Then they were all like, "Yay we did it!" at the end. godfuckingdamnit

Was just a Guildleve luckily.

A screen from today (figured out how to hide HUD so I took a load): said:

Just OOC, how much time would it take to reach level 99 now?

I was 75 back in the days, but lost my character. I'm mostly just interested in playing the CoP/Treasures/Goddess/etc. storylines, which I missed.

But I don't want to have to go through a tedious grind.
