PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Am I still on the same planet?

The Vita wasn't selling because it needed games tailored to a mobile market and not the gimped down experiences from home consoles it was getting.

And now we get a home console which enables you to play the gimped down versions... at home again. (minus the touch controls) and people are cheering? I don't get it. I just don't understand the purpose of this thing.

That was my first and only reaction when I saw the announcement.

However, after overthinking, I think it's a Brilliant idea.
Because the "need of bite sized games" is just a bullshit from nintendo fanboys to despise psp/vita hardware superiority only to deny everything when resident evil revelation, mgs 3 and others "home console" games came to the 3ds.
There is no "home" and "handheld" games distinction, only games that work(like games developed with vita/3ds in mind, whatever the genre) or not work(like some ports from a home console) on the console they run on.

I want this, but what about games that need to use the touchscreen?!?!?!

The first thought that went through my mind. Unfortunately it rules out a fairly large number of Vita games, including Killzone Mercenary which comes out tomorrow, thanks to the stupid touch screen bullshit the developer forced into the game, ala Uncharted on Vita which everyone complained about at the time of it's release. Sigh.

Is this confirmed? Because then even games like Monkey Ball, that don't use touch for gameplay will be unplayable (stuck in the menu). Tearaway is launching this year and stillhas a lot of touch control, there has to be a way to use touch on the Vita? If it is confirmed, I hope they will release the new non-touch-OS for existing Vitas, too :).

I didn't see Monkey Ball.

How do people not get this. It broadens the market appeal of the device.

LARGER MARKET APPEAL = MORE DEVELOPER SUPPORT

Just because it has the feature of being played on a TV doesn't mean people are going to not develop mobile experiences. What narrow viewpoints.

This.

It amazes me to see that people don't see the bigger picture. From a marketing standpoint this is a very versatile product. The Vita isn't doing well obviously and this product can revive the system. It also gives the Playstation brand as a whole more appeal. And with the remote play you basically get the ability to play PS4 games on a separate screen for 100 dollars. The ways Sony can position this device are numerous.

That's the thing. It "stream" ps4 game, but the ps4 cannot be played on the tv it is hooked up while the streaming session is ongoing.

An extra ps4 will mean you can play 2 ps4 games on 2 seperate monitors at the same time. Not the case here.

How can anyone play two games at once? -

Looks great.

The PS4 -> VitaTV -> TV streaming sounds great... but looks like the VitaTV is limited to 720p/1080i which kinda sucks.

"You can remote play PS4 games through PS Vita TV on a tv in another room (!!)"

Is the biggest thing people are overlooking. This is megaton.

How do you play for example, DJ Max Technika? Or can you only play games that has absolutely no touchscreen functionality? Someone said a certain game wasn't compatible, because the menu was touchscreen only...
Yep, Sony definitely needs to think of a partial solution for those games using the DS4 touchpad.

I expect publishers to tune their future releases with Vita TV BC in mind as well.

I'm confused about this. the price is low which is good but wont this cause big confusion for people buying Vita? I mean if people buy it and buy Vita games that do not support the console they will get confused by it. Also wont this be a bit against PS4 that is releasing soon? It seems to me that Sony doesn't know what they are supposed to do with the Vita.

This is really awesome! Especially for $99, I'm going to get one. Edit: I don't think it's set in for some of our members :3

Provided it gets DS4 support then most games will work fine.

Not sure how Uncharted: GA is going to work without the DS4 though.
Im not so sure. Ds4 touch screen is tiny. Vita has two touch panels, camara, etc. It's not as obvious as you make it seem.

Sony, you have got me hooked, line and sinker and choking on the line with all of this PSV/PS4 stuff!

Bring it the fuck on!!

So, will you still able to play all of the PS+ Vita freebies if you have a subscription but no Vita handheld?
Cos allowing that would totally sweeten the deal for couch gamers.

Of course, it's a Vita, and the screen is your TV. Your PS+ games would be treated the same as any other game that you buy on the PS Store.

Count me in day one (may even consider importing it). Being able to play Persona 4 Golden on my TV is worth the price of entry. I have to question if they are going to eventually allow PS4 controllers to hook up to it and use the touch pad for touch screen input, otherwise next to no Vita games will actually function on it.

I mean just looking at my drawer of Vita games, only Persona 4 Golden would function without it - even the likes of Ridge Racer require touch to navigate the main menu.

Do you need Vita memory cards or can you plug in a hdd or sd card? This sounds awesome. Playing PSP, Vita and PS1 games on such a small device...

This is the contrast between a company that understands the future gaming landscape and one that does not.

Sorry Nintendo.
Will see what sell more between 2DS and Vita TV.

I like the idea of a cheap, silent and small gaming/multimedia device for home use though.

I wonder about the quality though. Can it stream native 1080p without too much delay?

It doesn't support 1080p.

I'm guessing it'll be 720p for ps4 streaming. Fine for my 720p screen upstairs.

So if we both have super good internet, could I take this to a friend's house and play my PS4 games over the internet rather than lugging around my PS4?

no, you can't link dualshock 3 controller with psvita at the moment, but if they're bringing it to vtv, maybe it'll be a patch in upcoming firmware update.

Than it's not for me I think - I'd love a retro PS1 multtiplayer box with the ability to play modern games for small money.

I have a feeling this thing is not going to sell well. But I suppose it's selling at a profit, so no harm no foul.

They need some messaging to sell this, and I'm not sure that's worth the bother since it dilutes brand image even more than the 2DS does.

See those big AAA games that people wanted on the Vita? This justifies them.

See that causal market that occasionally plays games and mostly want to stream movies and music? This is for them

See that PS4 gamer that wants to play in different rooms in the house? This is for them

See that gamer that wants a cheap, low powered device to play indie games on the couch? This for them

See that kid that broke his vita and has a bunch of memory cards and games that would otherwise go to waste? This for them.

See that Vita gamer who was playing a game on their commute, but never sees the point of continuing while at home because they have a huge TV for gaming? This is for them.

See that nostalgic gamer that only wants to play some old PS1 games but doesnt want to buy a huge bloated console for them, just something small and simple? This is for them.

So many applications and scenarios.

Thank you for posting fellow GAFfer.

I was not expecting this, at all. It looks... interesting. It's not a product for me, that for sure but it can be quite handy for some people.

What I like the most is the clean minimalistic look of it. This can look great in a living room for it's simple design but regarding the features I'm interested at least for now. I can always change my mind.

This whole Vita-TV-announcement makes it much more obvious, why Sony scheduled this conference one day ahead of Apple's keynote, which might bring news regarding AppleTV and it's forthcoming controller-integration with IOS7.

Oh dear, so many alternatives for "when TV is occupied/other room" scenario

PS4 + Vita
PS4 + Oculus Rift's alternative
PS4 + "at home Vita" <= needs second TV

Mind boggling...

Cause "Apple TV" thing sells so "well" and we don't have cheapo but much more capable android alternatives (some even with SAT input)

You can also add,

5/ Some people already have a whole bunch of Vita games that they can't play because they subscribe to PS+ but don't have a Vita.

Although it's true that not all of them are compatible (I'm sure more will be but not all).
Holy shit that's massive, totally didn't think about that. If they market this properly they are going to make a killing.

Question...can I run multiple accounts on this like say my US and EU accounts?

if it is purely a vita, then no. But being on a TV in the living room for instance, there might be the tiniest possibility that Sony adds account support. That'd be great if they did, but I wouldn't count on it

Nintendo should have done this long time ago. I always thought that the Wii/DS should always benefit from each other somehow and encourage having both.

Im not so sure. Ds4 touch screen is tiny. Vita has two touch panels, camara, etc. It's not as obvious as you make it seem.

As I mentioned in a previous post, remember that the DS4 has an extra set of L/R buttons - those could be used as an "activate back touch" modifier, so maybe hold down either L1/R1 and use the touch screen to activate the back-touch, while L2/R2 work like the standard L/R buttons.

This is like Sony pissing on Ouya's grave, considering the Vita is getting an enormous support from Indies and massive libraries of psp and ps1 games on PSN.

No this thing is going to sell like hotcakes. Sony just needs some clear commercials about it. It's an amazing value.

Sony's main intent is to sell softwares. In that regard, this is a good supplement for VITA, especially for those people who are not into handheld.
