PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Don't approach this product from the PSVita only angle and then it'll click.

But it's called Ps Vita tv? How do you think the general public will approach it? How heavy do you think they will market it? If they do intend it for the masses it will need HEAVY marketing. That's where I see this failing.

And frankly, since it doesn't play even half of the best vita games due to input limitations, I have my doubts about its penetration. It's a good idea not ideally implemented.

Being someone that does not own a Vita, this is an instant purchase. Opens up a library of titles that I would never own otherwise.

I really think they should have bundled the DS4 with this. Without it, Vita game devs can no longer rely on the fact that every owner has a touchscreen, and that will split the userbase.

I really like it, but without Vita acting as a controller I'm gonna have to pass. Hopefully it gets updated.

I doesn't matter that it's "only" the gravity slide that uses the touchscreen. If a game has touchscreen functionality, it won't work on the PS Vita TV.

Of course we still don't know what will happen if you try to start up the game. Maybe you can play the game, but can't use gravity slide. Maybe they'll let you boot up DJ Max, so you can stare at the start menu. Or does these games not bootup at all? No one knows at this point.

Stuff such as this is almost certainly why this is a Japan only venture at the moment.

By the time it comes out in the US and Europe, I expect we'll have answers to all of those sorts of questions, and probably a pack in DS4 instead of a DS3 with touch controls and features mapped to the DS4.

Maybe Eyetoy Camera + Move could work with Vita TV

Plus the few exclusive titles the Vita does have won't work with this. Uncharted, Gravity Rush, Wipeout, LBP, Killzone, Tearaway etc all won't work on this. The majority of Vita games probably won't work. I don't understand the point.

The ONLY value I see in this is the ability this gives you to stream PS4 games to a separate tv. This doesn't mean anything to me since I only game on one tv in the house anyway, but I see this feature having an appeal to some.

It is not rocket science. Every PSP and PSONE game on PSN will work by default. Selected games on the vita will either not use the touchscreen, or be patched for use on the Vita tv. Your list is irrelevant. Sony may (or may not) choose to patch those games to work on the DS3 controller, the list of compatible games is not out yet, so your justification that these games will not work is complete speculation at this stage.

The appeal is also easy. You get access to 1300 games on the PSN back catalogue, plus select vita games, and movie streaming capabilities for an entry price of 100 bucks. The PSN back catalogue is available for dirt cheap nowadays, and offer far more content and engagement than your typical ios or android game. The low end market does not care for the so called Vita exclusives or whatnot. They want a cheap console with a large variety of games, and they get it with this device.

I'm not convinced the DS4 is going to be a saving grace there. Touchpad is a lot smaller than the Vita screen, so you'll need more precision to touch the right places. Yet it's also going to be a lot less accurate since you don't have a visual cue for where to touch it.

It would be really, really messy to implement that for most games.

They sell anything like this for PSP?

PSP has TV-out in all models but the original, but it just fills a box in the middle of the TV with huge black borders. This is a much better solution sans the lack of UMD support.

Because the "need of bite sized games" is just a bullshit from nintendo fanboys to despise psp/vita hardware superiority only to deny everything when resident evil revelation, mgs 3 and others "home console" games came to the 3ds.
There is no "home" and "handheld" games distinction, only games that work(like games developed with vita/3ds in mind, whatever the genre) or not work(like some ports from a home console) on the console they run on.

It was nintendo fanboys who keep touting the vita as being able to deliver console experience on the go?

Holy shit. Day one.

And I was just about to buy a Vita.

Then buy a Vita not this. This can't actually play Vita games outside of indies. Guess what? Those indies are also available to play on your tv with a PS3/4. If you want a Vita then the only option is to get a real Vita, not a device that's neither portable nor can it actually play most Vita games.

Wonder if it will be compatible with more than one controller at a time? In the part of the video in which they use Remote Play only one DS4 is used.

Dude. .. The list is out.

Alternatively you could just carry your system to a different TV, the PS4 probably weighs like 5 pounds. Plus I fail to see how this is competing with the Wii U, like at all...
Remote play functionality, that's how it competes. And it competes with a $225 lower price and with a big native HD screen.

When carrying your home console with you is so unconveniant that most people just buy a second console, you know there's someone to sell a Vita TV to.

Yeah, it's so much easier to unplug the PS4, drag it across the house, set it back up on the TV and repeat every time we want to remote play.

Silly.

Well at the rate we're going hardly any games will be 1080p. Plus it's just a bonus if you want to play on a second TV cheap.

$500 for PSVTV & PS4 to play on a different TV, $700 if you want to play on a different TV plus have remote play for PS4 games, as opposed to just $400 and carrying a console like everyone has done since the dawn of gaming...

I'm pretty sure you need an actual Vita for Remote play since, the PSVTV has no screen built in. So $300, for a PSVTV and PSV. Plus they're still portable games, Vita isn't competing against the Wii U, unless it's a fight about selling poorly.

Unless your personal WiFi is shit then an ethernet cable won't do dick for your download speeds. Vita downloads perfectly fine on my WiFi.

I use an ethernet for my PC/PS3. I usually get download speeds of around 8-9MB/s. On Vita I get 1MB/s.

This should fix that

Rubbish, there are plenty of Vita games that don't use, or have button replacements of, touchscreen controls.

Wipeout 2048 for example.

And so starts Sony's new line of budget consoles.
Obligatory

Actually I want this as PS One and PSP box more than anything.

The problem is they'll need to buy a controller, amongst other things (PSN+).

Selling it as 'just' $100 to someone who does not have anything else belonging to the Playstation ecosystem is somewhat misleading.

Why not just buy a PS3?

This sounds great, one of my favorite things about the GO was being able to use a PS3 controller to play PSP games on the TV.

Any news if we can use the Vita as a controller? I'd love to be able to play TearAway on the big screen but it sounds like it heavily relies on the touch screens of the Vita.

the whole purpose of it is to be on a tv, don't you prefer a real controller? any Dualsock3 or 4 is compatible

Nah, I love the vita, it feels really good and has more control options. I like the other Vita TV functions though and I hope it sells well. I might get it further down the line.

They wouldn't need to hack apart the games for Vita owners, we would have 100% compatibility.

All of that is as it stands right now.

And because of how it stands right now, is why this thing is only releasing in one market and not globally.

If you want to buy a Vita today your only option is to buy an actual Vita because only the actual Vita is available. By the time the VitaTV launches globally - i.e in 2014 after the PS4 is globally available - every concern you and others have raised regarding compatibility and the supported list of games might (and probably will) have been solved.

At first I was WTF! Then it settled and I want one. I guess when I asked for Sony to challenge OUYA with a $100 price tag for Vita, this is there answer....

If all theyre bringing us Indie and freemium games, they should've dropped the price to $100 to compete with the ouya or something...what is coming out to even push the price drop besides killzone?
lmao...

As a PS VITA owner i'm very happy by this news..

This will increase the market of potential vita for devs , this will help those who want a solution to share their PS4 stuff across their house ..i honnestly see only good things from this device.

Soul sacrifice on a TV screen ? COUNT ME IN

i love this product already. instead of upgrading to the 2000, i'll just stick my OG Vita and get this tv thing

type-0 and dissidia 012 on the tv mang

One positive side-effect of this is that it might diminish the frequency of tacked-on touchscreen/camera/gyro controls implemented just to check the "utilizing the unique capabilities of the Playstation Vita" box.. :)

lmao,WHERE did I say that? While it probably won't sale that well, I think it has broad appeal and will do well. Please take fanboy bullshit somewhere else.

I didn't sleep all night and must have misread.

And fanboy bullshit? Did you happen to miss my post when I said I was going to buy the Vita TV? It looks awesome.

I was simply stating a fact.

hmm. Although it wouldn't play Vita games, a discless PS3 could have been an interesting alternative. Would have been reasonably trivial to build in the remote play feature to play PS4 games on the PS3, it plays PS1 games, does netflix and gives you access to PS3 games too. And bundled with a DS3 you could probably get the price of a 12GB version to around the same as the vita TV bundle

speaking of which - is there any news on whether Sony plans to let you play PS4 games remotely on a PS3? Seems like it would be easy enough to make a PS3 app to receive the stream. If they could do that I wouldn't need this box - just use a PS3 instead.

The PR says it will support PS4 remote play "in a future software update", while at the same time not exactly being forthcoming with details such as multiplayer support, etc.

Ideally, it would work like the Wii U. So I would be able to take a DS4 from the room with the PS4 into a room with Vitabox, and continue my game uninterrupted on the new TV.

If it doesn't work like this, the device is pretty useless IMO. If it DOES end up working like this, Day One...or whenever "future software update" drops allowing this functionality.

Id rather have the PS4 play vita an dpsp games. Both are not mutually exclusive, but makes me nervousmit hasn t been announced
