PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Sony, please understand: If i want a mobile device, a Samsung S4, or an Iphone 5 or an HTC One is WAY better than vita, and also, i have access to TONS of services that Vita doesnt have.

I want this.

I've always wanted to play some psp titles and vita titles but didn't want to take the plunge as I don't use handhelds that much when I'm not at home.

What... what does that even have to do with a primary gaming device? By that logic, your phone should replace your PS4 and Xbox One desire as well.

But games?

And have you ever hooked an Android device up to a TV? The experience leaves a lot to be desired, I can assure you.

Very excited but Im cautious, worried about games like Gravity Rush or P4G not being compatible. More details on what games do and don't work is key.

they sell some ps2 games on psn store, if they're adding actual ps2 hardware into VitaTV, compatibility for PS2 emulator could maybe be higher so we got even more PS2 title on PSN

don't know if it's possible or not though
They won't do it with Gaikai on the near horizon. That's a ton of extra fabrication costs and a higher BoM to push on consumers by lumping in PS2 support when in a few years they'll be trying to use the PS2 back catalog as a reason to subscribe to their $10/month PS+ Platinum program with unlimited PS2 streaming to any Gaikai compatible device.

As much as I see the potential here, the prohibitive nature of the Vita memory cards is still a drawback.
Well part of the beauty of this is that the more Vita cards Sony sells the cheaper they'll cost, as increased sales will drive down fabrication costs and the economy of scale effect will make Sony more content with a smaller per-unit profit margin.

So yeah, it's for the western market then you will say, but who besides a real small minority would want to play mobile games on the big TV?

I think this device is a waste of resources.

The Bombcast hit this nail right in the head when they were talking about the 2DS. Why are people self-centered enough to think that every product was made for them?

I for one would love to have this. I have never owned a PSP so that backlog alone is enough for me. I still plan on buying a Vita. This is just one of those things that gives me options. I have the money, why not?

One thing that confused me with this video is seeing them play a game multiplayer that is not a ps1 game. How is this possible? Does the hardware or OS offer local multiplayer support on the get go? That would be awesome if true.

The thing is literally a Vita. If it works there, it'll work on this.

Touchscreen/touchpad/gyro/camera inputs are important in some Vita games. Some game can work fine for few hours, then at some weird puzzle you will be forever stuck. There is no way sony will give it a permission to work on VitaTV before working on solution.

I... don't see the point of this XD

Vita games are way too low res to be playable on a big screen... Remote playing from a console to a console seems illogical... You get all the hurdles of non native playing, plus none of the benefits of having a mobile device you can carry around your house...

If gaikai takes off, this could be a cheap way to get Ps4/3/2/1 games, i guess...

Oh good lord this

The UG802 I got is a nice novelty and all, but I'd rather light myself on fire than subject that to anyone else

Same with using my phone. Just get a damn Chromecast if that's your maneuver, Hoover.

I am well aware of this, but considering the amount of games on Vita that have use these things in a meaningful manner, I don't really care :p

Patch it out or ignore it. That stuff just doesn't work. Hell, using the back touch as a goalpost in FIFA is the main thing I like of it, and that came out at freaking launch.

I was referring to the PS1/PSP stuff, btw.

Well I assume this is what crashed GAF at 2 AM for me? I was wondering what could be so important that GAF went down at the odd time.

Anyway as for this news all I can say is fuck yes Sony fuck yes. I personally cannot play on handhelds at all. I don't know what it is I just can't do it so this is the perfect solution for me. Then on top of that being able to stream my PS4 into another room seals the deal. Looks like I better start adding Vita/PSP games to my PS+ collection now.

Sony is really killing it lately.

VitaTV trailer starts with the guy playing Soul Sacrifice on his HDTV. :)
.

I just wonder about the upscaling with this thing, I heard that Vita capture units output decently to monitors, but this need its own upscaling chip, sure HDTV do their own scaling but it wont help because of sub native resolution games will look bad on small and even worse on bigger sized HDTVs.

This Thread is moving wayyy to fast.

On topic does anyone think game dev's may start making less graphically intensive games at native 720p + resolutions to take advantage of the fact that Vita games can now be played on an HDTV?

Also does this thing have a battery?

As a guy with three apple TVs throughout my house, this sounds fantastic. Buy a PS4 and put it in my living room. Pay $100 to play my PS4 from my bedroom TV as well.

If it works well, that's fantastic AND WAY better a value than the same prices Xbone.

My wish is... because VitaTV is permanently attached to the wall outlet and heating of the unit is not a problem [no hands are gonna touch it], that Sony will rase the clocks of the VitaTV SoC, enabling higher rez rendering and better framerates.

But chances for that are minimal.

Touchpad with DS4, as long as the game just needs swipes or whatever and not exact touching of objects on the screen. Back touchpad is mostly used to cover for the lack of L2/R2/L3/R3, not an issue here as most games can just be mapped to those buttons. Gyro exists in the DS3 and DS4. Camera, this one is true.

I like the idea, bravo to Sony for doing this. Any built-in memory, or is memory only from the silly vita memory cards? Any word on whether you can connect an external HDD to this. E.g. for people with large download collections to avoid spending an arm and a leg on a 64GB card.

It's more of a streaming box than anything else. i think the fact it can play Vita games is more of an afterthought.

OT: Anyone know how to control PS Vita TV if you buy the non-bundle? What if someone doesn't have a Dualshock 3 at home? Can a smartphone or tablet be used?

I think some people are getting too concerned with touch and mic controls. Of course this doesn't mean Sony has to stop making Vita games that use those features, there is nothing wrong making games that only work on Vita handheld as the new handheld seems to be more appealing for a wider market with its thinner design and wider range of color options. Sony can continue to make Vita handheld only games like inVizimals, LittleDeviants, Reality Fighters, Vita Pets, TearAway, Smart As and etc. Of course with games that use touchscreen only for a few things like say Uncharted, Dynasty Warriors, Killzone Mercenary and etc, devs should have a control scheme available for traditional only controls.

DS4 compatibility will be patched.

it use Vita OS, I don't think it's an afterthought at all, it's just unfortunate since they're chasing to push the price down as much as they can

edit: I don't think the price is going to get any lower, so you'll probably get added value as the year goes on like bundling memory card in the basic package etc.

I bet they will add functionality for that. Sony remotes (especially the PS3 remote) will probably work, too -- though it's a bit of overkill.

I imagine it will come with some basic remote control or smartphone app to control the basic TV type functionality like Netflix or Hulu, but Vita and PSN play will require at least a DS3.

I'm disappointed they didn't take this chance to throw on SD card support so it can use proprietary and regular cards if you already own them.

Will there be a package without the controller for us that already own a ps vita? Would be great to play Uncharted again on my 60" tv.

I'm just going to live in my fantasy world that has me opening the PS4 box on November 15, and there is one of these babies tucked into the packaging.

so... Will the games look good or crappy? Can PSVita TV run games at 1080p or so?

Yeah that is my question too. Vita itself is not even 720p, so what will happen to a 1080p PS4 game, when it will be played on a TV via remote play? What will be the resolution?

Sony needs to get the whole vita library working on this. Missing stuff like Uncharted hurts it way too much.

A question though, does the streaming to another tv for ps4 mean I can have it outputting to two screens? One connected to the ps4 and another to the TVita?

You do realize that something like Black Ops has a native resolution of 960 x 544 (same as Vita) on PS3, right? It's upscaled and AA'd, and it looks fairly decent. It's not like the Vita is running PSP or 3DS level resolution, it's not going to look particularly bad on a TV.

Just noticed a bad thing. No optical out. That'll make it difficult to hook up to my monitor in the spare room - it doesn't have audio but I currently hook up via optical (or 3.5mm cable) to a logitech speaker set.

Arse

Buying it. Thankfully it's not digital-only. I needz it.

No touch features kind of sucks, though. I really enjoy that aspect in stuff like LBPV, Rayman Legends, Velocity Ultra & Dragon's Crown. It's really handy for menus and quick restarts too.

DS4 controller might be a potential option in the future, but there's still no backtouch for that... I could see using the regular Vita itself as a controller, but at that point it could just be ta $10 HDMI cable instead.

This is a good way for them to make a likely futile Ouya stand where Amazon, Google etc are going, but it will probably help Vita's install base in some way, and could potentially find a home market in China's Wii/PS2 "middle class" as a really cheap console that's also current.

I think yosp answered this on twitter, I believe it's a hd signal that's passed?

How did we ever manage with SNES etc? And tbh watching game reviews on TV, the vita footage looks pretty good
