Sony understood my needs just fine. I have a smartphone. I have a Kindle. I don't game on those devices. I have a Surface Pro. I play Shadowrun Returns on it occassionally, but I use it for drawing and writing.
The Vita scratches my handheld gaming itch. I bought it because I wanted a traditional gaming device. I don't like smartphone games. They hold absolutely no allure for me, and I've played nearly all of the biggest and most praised games.
I absolutely wanted a portable console, and Sony delivered it. The Vita isn't foe everyone, but it has its place. It's library is strong and varied, and those speaking otherwise simply haven't been paying attention.
The Vita and 3DS are fricking godsends to a traditional gamer, with traditional portable gaming needs. I actually don't own a 3DS yet, but I think it's awesome, and I'll be getting one next year.
I can't even express how grateful I am that Sony and Nintendo still produce the handhelds and gaming experiences they do. The day they stop, or give in to mobile trends, is probably the day I quit portable gaming (or just play my backlog of PSP, Vita, PS1, and Nintendo games...)
