PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Wow, I said this is what I thought House was hinting at the PS4 reveal but even I am a but surprised I was right. This is an instapurchase for me, so excited!

Problem solved

Depends on what you mean by problem solved. You can probably do some mappings so that the touch controls theoretically translate to the controller, but I wouldn't see for example, the problem of wanting to play Murasaki Baby on the Vita TV as being solved in a satisfactory way by those mappings. It also doesn't solve things like Tearaway using the camera to put your face on the sun.

What even?

And here I thought the 2DS announcement the other week was goofy. This is just as much, if not more so.

Both announcements are rad. Two of the coolest things coming down the pipeline. Vita TV even looks a bit more interesting than PS4 (at the moment given the PS4s shitty launch lineup). And good to see that these companies are thinking on their feet.

I dunno, these games will probably never be playable on Vita TV (like, playable as in the same as the OG Vita), unfortunately. There are alternatives, like using another Vita as remote or alternate controls.

Curious how Media Create will track it. Vita, Vita Slim, and Vita TV?

It's going to be an absolute cluster fuck. I don't think they can track digital sales and with all those device and all this wi-fi connectivity between systems and concepts, I wouldn't be surprised to see sales of a particular title reaching 50% digital. NPD, media-create numbers are essentially going to be useless if they don't find a way to incorperate digital sales.

Anyway, they will track Vita TV and Vita as separate hardware (which they are). Physical game copies obviously are simply tracked as Vita titles.

My biggest concern is IQ... There were already vita games running less than native (540p) on the system... to then blow that up to a 1080p or 4k screen? This seems more like Wii 2 than the Wii U.

This is fucking genius, if Sony markets it well I could see it exploding.

To who though? Hardcore gamers aren't going to like going sub-HD on their TVs... Hell, we're talking sub-subHD... below current PS360 levels. Casuals don't want a phone attached to their TV sans the phone... see Ouya. Who does that leave then?

I'm honestly confused as to who this is for. At least the 2DS was clearly targetted at children.

Right. Aaaandd..... done. I didn't even know I needed it; this thing looks great! I get to try Vita games plus its super portable, and they really nailed it on the price! I'm one of the cheapest bastards I know, and I'd buy this without thinking twice.

yeah, the price is closer into impulse buy territory. I also want one just for the sleek design and my mind just rationalize that I have some ues for it even though I already own Vita and like the portability aspect of it.

No touch capability? Well I guess the consumer has no choice but to purchase an actual PS Vita....
there's always a method to Sony's maddness. Now find a creative way to bring back the Minidisc format Sony!!!

heh I'm going to assume that you're joshing.

If not, that's not really the point.

Some people really love playing on the telly. Guess how many games some of those are missing out on? Especially those who probably can't afford a console. All the games that are Vita specific, all the awesome "indies" that have been released. And those that just don't like the OTG concept?

And this is only the "I toss my own salad" scenario whereas in truth it's a strategic business decision. The Vita might get an extended Android library(PSM), how many have not gone to exclusively play on android/ios? Or rather those who never played a game and just now realised that they are "gamers" as well?
This is a perfect step into riding the coming way that is surely to come while Apple push their own box. A contender is already here with similar games and even better ones.

Then again I might just go back to tossing my own salad since I have no clue what they thought, just my crazy input.

This is for me. Handheld screens are too small for me and the controllers on handhelds hurt my hands after playing them for a time. This nifty little device solves both of those problems. Now, I admit that I am in the minority but I'm buying this day one, or even importing it if it doesn't look like it'll make it to the west.

I might just buy this as my designated "I really just want to play MGS and Crash Bandicoot and have no other way to" machine.

Pretty awesome little device, though, and even better if you're already a Sony hardware owner and/or are invested in the PS ecosystem.

For people who want a cheap, light and tiny setup box, who also play PS1, PSP and PSV games. And PS4 games via remote play.

Does this thing have the same graphics chip as the current vita? It would be cool if it was slightly more powerful so it could do AA for the big screen. Also, what resolution does it play at on TVs?

Most likely mentioned already (I'm not reading all those posts on my phone) but could not the DS4 touchpad help emulate the touchscreens on the Vita?

I see this more as an Apple TV beat down with the Delicious bonus of PSN/PSone/PSP/Vita gaming. I mean, you can cheaply access the PSN store now on any TV. That's huge for movies and streaming Apps like HBOGO/Netflix/Amazon. Why go to iTunes when you can do this option for $100? There has to be variable resolutions at play here depending on what you are doing with it at the time. Just for watching movies at 1080P alone or it would be a lost opportunity. It could be a slightly more powerful chipset just for that reason alone. No reason not to have full PSone res for those games. Or even upscale Vita games a bit with a scaler chip. Because if its only a Vita in a deck of cards it missed out on the bigger picture.

Crash Bandicoot games don't work on the Vita and so that means it doesn't work on this, at least not yet.

Haven't been reading the thread, have you? Lots of examples. Inquire within.

Ah, I see. I know next to nothing about the Vita, so I'd have to do my research before I actually purchased anything.

Interesting device but cant ps3 already play hulu netflix etc? I only see playing ps vita games on tv the only new capability. That isnt apart of the ps3/4 ecosystem
