The tank SHOULD take initiative and be the one marking mobs and basically leading the group through the dungeon. And if people aren't following your markings and attacking the correct mobs, call them out on it. The tank should be the one controlling the encounters.

That said, I've been in a few groups where the casters knew what they were doing well enough to follow my lead, mark all the right targets, and cast their sleeps accordingly. When this happens that's obviously one less thing for the tank to worry about and everyone benefits. When I'm playing with my friend and we're on skype together this is usually how we run, but occasionally you will find yourself in a DF group with a mage that actually knows his shit.

I mark them as a tank, it's easier for the tank to mark it because he's the one charging in, for the adds I don't think it matters, but you may as well mark those too, I sometimes only mark the first mob as my friend would sleep whichever she wants, and I'd mark the adds accordingly depend on which one is slept and which isn't.

Heh, guess more work for me~ :P

The other being the AOE variety, these folks like dem AOE's forcing me as a tank to keep all mobs constantly on hate, which isn't an issue for me anymore since I've been doing it for so long it's second nature now... xD;
I like to throw Fira once so I hit all the enemies and mark them all on the target list. This game need an option to "enemy engaged with party member > put on target list".

If I'm with a DPS that likes to break my sleep, I usually Fira all the enemies until the enmity icon turns yellow, then attack the tanker target until they turn green again. Am I doing it wrong? I'm not aggroing or anything, but I don't know how the tankers feel about that.

Also here's a question I wanted to ask you folks, who do think should deal with the marking?
does it always have to be me as a tank? Or does it depend on the players?
Cause when I first started tanking I ran into a healer who said it was my job to mark 'em and not his to show who he was sleeping...? Saying no healers ever mark(Something I do as a healer myself... :P)
Is he right? Or was he just being a lazy arse...?
It IS your job, but that doesn't mean that no one could ask you if you'd like them to mark. If the tanker is still new to his job, I talk to them about the marks and do it on the first enemy party to teach him. Worked well so far.
My Sleep is in a macro that marks the target as bound, so that gets covered at least.

it really doesn't matter who does the marking as long as everyone obeys it.

Pretty much.

Marking should be required, imo. It makes things so much easier to target because the marking becomes a clickable extension above the mob that makes it so much easier for me to mouse target. Much better than tabbing through mobs and trying to figure out which one is highlighted.

controller/ps3 players.

Is there a more efficient way for the quests where you need to use a key item on enemies?

Right now i'm targeting mob, press square, key item, dpad to the item, click twice before you can start casting, if you get interrupted you gotta repeat that which sucks.

yes, go to the key item and set it on the hotbar.

Still banned after being hacked by a gold farmer...no way to check on the status of the ticket, apparently? It's been like 5 days. Every time I call the phone number, it is immediately busy.

Oh my god that's terrible - were you not using an authenticator? How complex was your password? My password is complex, like 3@nJ8kO!z0qRq5k0!@8vT but I'm wondering if it can still be hacked, ya know?

retarded that the marking doesn't appear on the enemy list though. hard to keep track which of these 4 mobs of the same type that is missing aggro :/

Franky I think the game should automatically highlight the target the tank is attacking. Not with a mark, but with some other slightly more subtle UI indication.

FFXIV tries really hard to teach players group mechanics, but a lot of players ignore guildhests and don't read help text. You need to bake a certain amount of 'expected behavior' helpers into the UI/game mechanics.

I think the worst offender is enmity/hate in general - its just not an obvious concept for new players. Why wouldn't you nuke multiple targets repeatedly as a black mage. That's why you're there right?

After you unlock grand company, then you need seals for the license.

Funny thing about the seals. For some reason I thought I need to farm 20k..I just didn't focus on it as I hate grinding and was close to giving up after amassing a lot but not 20k..when I went by the npc in Ul'Dahl and finally figured out that I only needed 2k...

What makes you think queues aren't going to be worse if they force you to do trash? You're waiting for a group to complete the dungeon when it's stuck reserving an instance. Causing the dungeon to take longer isn't going to lead to people doing something else at 50 considering it's still going to be the average player's primary source of Mythology Tomestones. If anything, it'll make queues longer as the wait to get in is going to be longer.

Not sure why you read so much into what I said in the bracketed part. It was a one line throw away comment speculating on why they even have instance reservation queue issues. Instances probably linger a bit after they are done and being done at 3x the rate by people chaining them it is not unrealistic to expect this to increase the amount of instances required. Just speculation on my part and frankly I dont care about the queues. I am not a MMO server technician, they seemed to fix the last problem so I am sure they will sort this out. Perhaps if there was more than 1 viable dungeon at 50 none of this would be an issue at all.

What my original post was all about was not wanting to run from boss to boss for everything in this game because that is fucking stupid. I hope they get that sorted out too.

Nope, no authenticator...I had one, but removed it when I found it annoying when playing on my PS3. Mistake.

My password is not as complex as yours, but it does have capital letters, lower case letters, numbers and symbols. It is also greater than 12 characters, so...I dunno.

I went ahead and put in another ticket for good measure. I just want to play. :-\

I've noticed two types of groups that I meet during the duty finder, first being the sleep strategy kind, these folks tend to be smart enough to know what to do while following marks on mobs made by me, though there are a few who don't do it constantly during fights which forces me to change strategy mid fight~ :P

The other being the AOE variety, these folks like dem AOE's forcing me as a tank to keep all mobs constantly on hate, which isn't an issue for me anymore since I've been doing it for so long it's second nature now... xD;

Is he right? Or was he just being a lazy arse...?

Tactics are nominally the tank's job, both in the current meta (tank pulls because of lack of complexity) and in general (single-target hate abilities, so we've gotta go along with what you want to focus if we don't want to go splat.)
If and when we get more interesting/less forgiving pull mechanics (full open areas, links based on species rather than prebuilt groups, adds based on particular actions or statuses rather than just radius, and mobs which don't link to be pulled out of groups that do), pulling/marking will fall to ranged DDs more often.

It's probably never going to be a thing for heals to focus on, because THM gets a far better Sleep and it's less harmful to lose a DD's attention in most situations. If he is throwing them out, he should probably add a marker to his cast macro, but in most comps he shouldn't be.

So hey guys with the iOS authenticator - which of your secret questions does it ask when setting it up? (ie. name of first pet)

Also, is there any way to change your secret questions on your account page or mognet?

Thanks!

Heh, guess more work for me~ :P

Just macro mark into your pull skill...no extra work necessary. I have mine macro'd into Shield Lob so it marks as I pull. You don't need to mark them all, just the one you are fighting so they can assist. If everyone is doing their job that's all it take, even if the caster is sleeping, because no one should be hitting the other mobs anyway.

So, I guess I'll just keep telling myself that the same people who are ruining the Duty Finder pugs by being trolls and dickheads are the same people who are acting like 12 year-olds with the swimsuits and that will all change in a few weeks... right?

Potentially! Some will keep playing, though. They exist in every game sadly.

when is shield oath ever 'needed'?

seems like sword oath is enough to hold aggro for the most part, and you rarely are in danger of dying unless you are severely undergeared or the healer is.

So what are they waiting to actually sell the game again...that the first free month is over and hoping half the people that rushed to 50 stop playing...? I have seen some bad MMO launchs but not being able to buy the game still,2 weeks after the game is released beats them all...

1017 all morning for me (Jp server) gave up.

I'll play tonight.

Can't friggin find an upgrade for my arcanist chest, wearing lvl 15 piece and am lvl 24 now yet every single one I find that's higher level has worse stats, wtf. Keep checking the market and only "up" has big drop in defense ratings and people are trying to sell it for crazy amount of gil.

Fira's pretty terrible in terms of damage and in terms of killing shit before it hurts people. 2/3 the damage (admittedly split) and 20% longer cast time means it's only 55% of the DPS per target, meaning that for a 2-enemy encounter it's probably no quicker than just casting Fire on each mob until it dies, except with Fira you've got a hypothetical two of them beating on the tank for 10 casts = 20 hits rather than one beating for 10 and one beating for 5 = 15 hits. Even for 3, it only brings it to a dead-even 3x10 rather than 5, 10, 15.

Plus, it costs more MP, meaning fewer casts before you swap over to Blizzard. And after level 40, Fire has a 40% chance to proc a free instant Firaga but Fira does nothing.

It's basically only useful in FATEs where you want to tag everything, and a few very specific boss fights that pop more than 3 adds that have extremely low HP but all need to be killed on a short timer.

Is it one of the ones you're not allowed to wear a hat with? Those have stats about equal to a normal chest+hat of their level, and show up amazingly good but aren't all that hot.

Run Halatali and get the Doctore's gear - it's Lv.22 caster stuff IIRC.

Also, your Lv15 piece must be that beastly Acolyte gear or something (a good thing!) because even quest things are upgrades around that time.

Bit late to the party, but getting those swimsuits was worth it.

Well, did you get your level 15 one from a dungeon? Dungeon drops last a long time before they get beat out by quest/merchant gear.

So far I'm only up to Cutter's Cry, but is it me or does that dungeon just bore the shit out of everyone? Can't put my finger on it, have enjoyed leveling in dungeons, but man Cutter's Cry is just a huge miss for me.

Question - are the demon wall ground patterns always the same?

Yeah, it's like this:

Middle - Outer - Middle - Outer - Repel

Middle - Outer - Middle - Outer - Repel - Spawn 2 Bees

Middle - Outer - Middle - Outer - Repel

Middle - Outer - Middle - Outer - Repel

Middle - Outer - Middle - Outer - Repel

Middle - Outer - Middle - Outer - Repel

Death

Question - are the demon wall ground patterns always the same?
Yes.

The pattern alternates between middle and outer, with a knockback added you get into the middle for the second time, i.e:

middle , outer, midldle, outer (knockback) -- repeat.

On the second knockback he spawns gnats and the back half of the room permanently gets the crud on the ground.

EDIT - Beaten x2

Wow, nice math. Thanks!
My uses for Fira were pretty limited already, I use Blizzara and Scathe to tag FATEs. Now I don't even know why it's there.

I've hit the bit of the story where I need to do the Thousand Maw dungeon and I just can't bring myself to tank anymore with the rudeness of some people out there. Figure I'll just level up Lancer to where I am and do it as DPS instead, even if I have to suffer queues. A sad state of affairs, I guess, but eh.

Though if anyone here's on Exodus and wants to join a little Free Company, I've set up "Chocobo Knights". It's only at four members, but 75% of them are GAFfers! Just PM me.

Just curious, but how much does character progression open up during the mid-late levels?

From what I've played so far, each class only has a handful of active skills (outside of the pet classes.) For example, playing Archer in the early levels it's Heavy Shot → Straight Shot, Straight Shot, Straight Shot, Straight Shot. Lancer seems a little better with Feint → True → Vorpal → Sweep → Thrust.

It just seems like the classes skills in battle are repetitive. Thaumaturge is Thunder, Fire Fire Fire, Blizzard Blizzard Blizzard.

Does it get better later on? Are there opportunities for meaningful choices in battle? I still haven't played a class past level 10, but Arcanist → SMN / SCH seem like the classes that will have the most variety. Am I wrong?

Archer is very "spammy" at first. It gets a little better around Lv.15 and awesome when you pick up the Bard job at 30.

You'll still be spamming Hard Shot a lot to proc the Straighter Shot crits -- you got it backwards it your post :P -- but you eventually get skills that are completely off the GCD so you can weave in some ridiculous burst damage and stay engaged.

At Lv.42 Bard, my basic dungeon-run rotation looks like this:

- Internal Release /or/ Hawk Eye /or/ Raging Strikes /or/ Barrage (<--- Off GCD)
- Straight Shot
- Bloodletter (<--- Off GCD)
- Windbite ~while running into melee range
- Repelling Shot (<--- Off GCD) ~ bounces you back out to long-range
- Venomous Bite
- Quelling Strikes (<--- Off GCD)
*** Up to this point, there's zero downtime / waiting for cooldowns!!! ***
- Hard Shot until Straighter Shot crit proc, then Straight Shot
- Repeat from the top 'til you can use Misery's End

You can even run this rotation with Misery's End, Bloodletter, and Hard Shot on a single-key, priority macro and it'll never skip a beat, clip a skill or mess up your situational play in any way.

From Lv.18 and onward, you'll be racking up huge amounts of easy exp in Fates with your Quick Nock AOE and DOTs. In Coerthas, I can usually hit Gold in less than a minute with 3 or 4 crit-boosted Quick Nocks and DOT spreading; amazing for tagging multiple Fates with a group.

By Lv.40, you'll be micro-managing your two regen ballads in dungeons/fates, kiting adds during hard and/or outright botched pulls and routinely getting assigned the fun, interactable stuff (like Stone Vigil's cannons) during dungeons because we're mobile and ranged. If you're even remotely decent at managing your songs, you'll have so many pending friend requests from White/Black Mages that it will seem silly.

Basically, Archer is much too easy and ultimately, super boring...at first. It gets better very fast though and Bard makes everything okay :).

I don't think I am understanding GC gear. The early level 30 stuff seems to require a higher rank. I looked up online what the rank requires and it is 11k seals earned to unlock the rank. I am level 31 now with 6.7k seals and I have been doing a lot of fates. It seems like I would outlevel the gear before getting enough rank to buy it ?

Franky I think the game should automatically highlight the target the tank is attacking. Not with a mark, but with some other slightly more subtle UI indication.

I agree here. A simple highlight or checkmark in the mob list would solve this problem.
Does this game have a /assist command like FFXI did? That was used for targeting whatever mob was currently being attacked by whoever the tank was.

I think the worst offender is enmity/hate in general - its just not an obvious concept for new players. Why wouldn't you nuke multiple targets repeatedly as a black mage. That's why you're there right?

I think being pounded in the face is enough to tell people not to overnuke or carelessly nuke but some will just never learn....and will probably blame the tank instead.

Another thing that irritates me about unmarked mobs. As THM/BLM, Im sleeping mob 2 and 3 while we beat on 1. If 2 is almost awake and 1 is almost dead, I wont re-sleep 2 because hes about to be attacked. If the mobs arent marked, I have no way of knowing which is 2 and 3.
This becomes less of an issue when you get Deep Sleep but for early dungeons, its a pain. I like it when things go smoothly and, imo, slept mobs = going smoothly.

Then again, there seems to be overabundance of careless AOE in this game and my slept mobs get woken up by careless Archers anyways. Sometimes it feels like "whats the point!?!".

Wow just had 2 DPSs at Sunken Temple that just would not go to the square after Doom. 5 tries, they did the same thing every time.
I explained it at least 3 times.
me and the healer could get it down to around 10% but the bees always ended up getting us.

Just macro your actions and use the <tt> as target. It will automatically use your action on the target your target (in this case the tank) targets.

ie:
/ac whareveraction <tt>

Targets everywhere....

So, I guess I'll just keep telling myself that the same people who are ruining the Duty Finder pugs by being trolls and dickheads are the same people who are acting like 12 year-olds with the swimsuits and that will all change in a few weeks... right?

i wouldn't be so sure. some will go, others will stay. it's funny how easy it was to dodge the bad random pugs for me pre level 50. i assume there wasn't enough 'profit' to be made in their eyes by running dungeons for fun. now that they are forced to run dungeons 24/7, they come out of their caves to force their ugly style on everyone.

Since this thread is no longer about errors, but is about the bad results from duty finder, I suggest changing the thread title to an old idea I had: Doodie Finder
