Let's look back: Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

The vice city mission didn't really give me any issues. The controls were shit but I managed to do it on my first or second go. Those fucking Zero missions though mang...fuck Zero and fuck David Cross, he is guilty by association.
"Supply Lines" is the worst GTA mission ever, but thankfully Zero's missions were optional and not related to the Story and advancing the campaign.

Vice City is my favorite GTA but SA is 1A. I still have my copy which, I think, has Hot Coffee on it.

There was so much to do. I loved the side mission where you were the truck driver and had to deliver cargo to a particular place in time. Sometimes, the police heat would be ridiculous. I also loved the train missions. Going super fast and launching it off the tracks was always enjoyable. I remember, somewhere near the Vinewood sign, there was a parking lot next to a beach and Paint N' Spray. I would grab a monster truck from the country area, drive it over to the particular parking lot, and run over all the parked cars. If they exploded, I'd drive a bit and return once they respawned. I spent a lot of time doing that.

I remember playing it so much in high school that my friends would ask me where to go to find a particular place and I can tell them where to go by where they were starting out from (go straight here, make a left followed by a right type instructions). They found it amazing.

Best GTA by far. I loooooved the RPG elements -- leveling up your skills, hitting the gym to get bigger muscles, etc. I hope that is back in GTA V (I haven't really read anything on it, just watched the trailers).

Stuff like food and weight are still gone but they're bringing back the skills. Stuff like driving, stamina etc. Each of the 3 guys has a skill they specialize in too, like I think Trevor is the flying guy.

Never forget.

I don't get why people had such a hard time with this. These missions weren't hard at all. :(

Dude, CJ could SWIM! That was amazing at the time.

I think CJ is probably my favorite GTA protagonist so far. Dude was hilarious. Loved the interactions with Woozie. Brothers 4 life.

Take over all the rival hoods the moment they're 'unlocked', to then lose them all because of the story. I think this is what happened to me back in the day.

Loved breaking into Area 51 in that game. And the casino robbery that felt like Ocean's 11. Plus the random outskirt towns and sniping people while hiding in the bush. And skydiving! And working out, and jetpacks. And...

Oh god. GTAV can't get here soon enough

You can download SAAC 1.2 here :
https://docs.google.com/folderview?id=0B4lfqq0DpUo-a05UTmUxdjlXczg&tid=0B4lfqq0DpUo-WGV0OVVTS1Z0LVk

Copy/paste this in presets.ini :
http://gtaforums.com/topic/483521-saac-ini/

Have SAAC run while you're playing and choose one of the presets (I think Xbox 360 is the same config as PS2 and Xbox 360(new) is something that looks like modern controls). If you have trouble running SAAC it may be because you're using Windows Vista/7/8, try to look up for a fix on internet.
If you're already emulating a 360 controller with your Dualshock then it should work too.

Will try. Thanks!

By the way, does it work on OS X too?

Only ever played GTA4, but I have 3/VC/SA as well, where should I start? Tried 3 for a bit but the controls felt really dated.

VC has a good soundtrack... A great soundtrack... The best, even.

But SA has it beat on every other level (plus VC has aged pretty badly). And so if you want the best GTA experience to date, you'll stick with SA.

I loved the setting more than any other but the missions; some were just horridly designed. I prefer GTA IV over it, but I know GTA V will be more like SA than GTA IV.

Couldn't get into it since I'm not a fan of the hoodlum style. Vice City is more to my taste.

What's that supposed to mean?

Anyway, my only complaint about San Andreas is that the empire building aspects brought over from Vice City didn't really fit into the game. Other than that, SA is the best of the GTA series by far.

So much fun.
Dog fighting the military in jets
Gangfights with a jet pack
ATVing over the back country

It made it easy to see why we are doomed to the same looking and acting main characters in videogames though. It's either stubbly faced, dark haired white male or a customizable blank slate. with no real character of it's own.

My favorite GTA after GTA III. There was just so much to do in the world, and I loved the 90's vibe to it. There were a lot of crappy missions but overall I thought the game was excellent.

I'm a little perturbed by the fact that everyone who prefers the other settings to the "hood" setting at the beginning of SA is being labelled a racist.

The whole "I can't relate to thug life/a black person" thing is stupid, but there's nothing wrong with preferring one setting stylistically to another.

Loved the game, it had a nice variety of missions and I really loved it for it.

Much better GTAIV where every mission is just drive some charachter around for 20 minutes and get into a lame shootout afterwards.

Hopefully that's all fixed for V but I doubt it. Whoever did the mission design from the old games must not be around anymore.

Michael - Bullet Time

Franklin - Bullet Time Driving

Trevor - Rage mode (double damage, more health)

Those are their unique special abilities, but (according to I read somewhere at some point) each character has at least one stat that they excel in over the other two. e.g. Michael and Trevor can never surpass Franklin's driving skill stat.

Didn't they unlock something cool though? I can't imagine that I'd put myself through that for nothing

Ahh well, a decent compromise. But to confirm, will I be able to level up my, running, bike riding, shooting with a specific gun -- stuff like that? I have no idea why they went away from it.

The best GTA game so far. I'm playing through it again on PC at the moment, and it's still absolutely amazing.

I'm skipping the bastard Zero missions this time though. That guy can shove his antennae up his arse.

I was really LTTP on this one. Amazing game but...

PC version is so weird control-wise. Controller doesn't work right, and neither does the kb+m. I usually switch between those depending on what I'm doing.

I quit playing because I couldn't proceed with a mission because my swimming skill was too low. I can't for my life figure out how to dive in this game on PC.

Never forget.

I mean I was able to to complete this but raising the swimming skill is impossible.

Gangsta rap and all that stuff. It's not my style.

I remember borrowing this game from a friend since my parents didn't approve of me playing the game. It was one of the best fall breaks ever

How you going to make this thread, and not post a link to the reveal thread.

Shit is hilarious even today.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=820

That thread is great. That's what every forum was when GTA:SA was announced. I wonder how many of those people, years later, were the people who fondly look back at SA and long for it after IV came and went.

What's great about it too is that.. page 1 and 2 .. like 80% of those posters have been permabanned. That's madness.

I mean I was able to to complete this but raising the swimming skill is impossible.

That's actually the worst thing about San Fierro. You need to do that mission for Woozie where you swim under the patrol ships and sneak on board the tanker... But you have to increase your lung capacity to do it. The first time I played SA I had no trouble, and just got right into it, but every other time I played (because I never swam in those other play throughs) I had to increase my lung capacity and swimming ability.. ugh. It was such a chore. Basically just an hour of diving into the water, going to the last breath, swimming up, over and over again.

Nah, the skills are more like:

Michael - Bullet Time

Franklin - Bullet Time Driving

Trevor - Rage mode (double damage, more health)

Actually, Derrek is right. While those guys all have their own special abilities, individual characters have their own skills as well. Not only does Franklin have the "bullet time driving," but he is also a better drive in general. Trevor is also better at flying planes.

From CVG overview of the May 2nd preview:

Each character is rated in a series of skill categories: Stamina, Shooting, Strength, Stealth, Flying, Driving, Mechanic, Lung Capacity.
Each character has a 'Special': Franklin is an adrenalin junkie and can slow down time while driving; Trevor has a frenzy mode, where he's does double damage, takes half damage, and has a unique melee attack; Michael has his own version of bullet time
Specials are governed by a meter, it drains after use and recharges slowly
Other skill categories are shared and can be improved by completing missions, side missions, activities and more
Trevor will always be the best pilot, Franklin will always be the best driver but each can improve their proficiency a little
One of the skill categories is stealth, suggesting players will be able to take different approaches to missions

This also extends in a smaller format to NPCs that you hire to complete heists with you. One may be better at firing a gun, which is valuable for a "loud" heist, but also he might demand a higher cut.

Well Ill be damned.

And the hype meter rises again..

Do the controls change when you go from on foot to driving? That's always been my biggest issue with the game on PC and dealing with these programs.

You can configure the on-foot and driving controls separately with that tool and get them just as you want them. You don't change anything in the game (except set it to joypad controls), the tool handles making sure your button assignments do the right thing in the game.

My favorite GTA, hopefully V can bring the fun back to the series that was lost for me.

The Ballad of Gay Tony has already shown that Rockstar still has what it takes to make a San Andreas. That in some ways was like a mini-SA. The characters and mission variety were something like you'd expect from the series last generation.
